Is it just me or does FFXIII lack the magic of past FF games? The graphics, music and game-play may be considered extraordinary, but I feel like the game doesn't go anywhere warm.

Anywhere warm? huh?

The magic is not really that spectacular if your not the one casting it I think, I usually play as a COM and leave the magic casting to the RAV, and not controlling all 3 characters makes it boring when trying to be strategic.

I would say that both XIII and XII lacked magic. XIII never quite blew me away like previous FF games. It was like something major was missing that made all FF games before XII great. And to be honest, if XIII did not have the FF label attached to it, I would have given up on the game pretty near the begining.

But I missed spells like ultima, holy, meteor. And none of the upgraded spells really looked all that impressive.

Also, summoning was pointless. I only used it if my party was about to wipe.

There was magic, but yeah, it wasn't anything spectacular. Just generic barrages. Magic was utilized in a new way (and I was fine with it), but going by the most outspoken opinions of FFXIII, it wasn't very well received.

EDIT: Whaaa? This is just another hate thread? Fuck that :jtc:

Is FFXIII like the old FF games? Of course not, but that didn't diminish any enjoyment I got. It had it's own wow-factor that made me enjoy it.

I don't think by magic, the OP meant spells and such (which we do have anyway). I think the OP meant magic in the sense of the WOW factor. For me, the game did. However, the "magic" ran out fairly quickly, since it is a fairly short game. I honestly have yet to come across a main line FF game that I don't like. I like them all to different degrees, some more than others, but I haven't found one where I've said to myself "This game sucks, I'm never playing this again!"

Oh you mean it left a less than favorable impression?

It did that too, but the OP seems smart to enough not mince words and give a clear idea of what he was on about? I dint notice the Magic I was to busy focusing on on what Fang was smacking the crap out off, I only really noticed it when Vanille launched staggered enemies with Firaga.

Some Wind based spells may have done that.........if there were even Wind elemental spells in FFXIII:hmph:

I quite enjoyed the magic in this game. With FFXII, in the time it took to cast offensive magic, you could attack 3 times, each attack about as good as the magic you could have cast. So aside from buffs and healing, I can honestly say I very rarely used magic. I only ever used offensive magic when the enemy's physical defense was insanely strong or if they had a Paling up.

With FFXIII, I saw magic as more useful. It was kinda necessary to raise the Stagger Gauge. Though really, I controlled Lightning throughout my game playthrough one, and I only used certain spells, usually ra spells and Thundaga when she learned it. I did find that they were useful, but only the ga spells really wowed visually.

Not that kind of magic...

let me reword what the op said to better fit the meaning.

Does FFXIII lack the wow-factor that past FF games have? Graphics, music, and game-play may be extraordinary, but the game itself is relatively bland.

The second part confused me a bit about not going anywhere warm, I can only assume what I said is what the OP meant, and not someplace warm like Costa Del Sol appears to be very warm.

I'm sorry there was confusion with what I meant when I said "magic". In retrospect I should have considered other possible word choices.

To be put simply, FFXIII lacks enchantment, regardless of its other redeeming qualities.

Think about it like this: Does the first three episodes of the Star Wars Saga, 1-3, have the same kind of alluring enchantment as the final three, 4-6? No, even though the first three episodes have beautiful layouts, the final three still have something special that touches my heart.

I believe this is the case with FFXIII, lots of bells and whistles but no heart.
