Square Enix’s Dave Hoffman has been dropping a lot of hints lately about Project X. The unaccounted title was previously revealed to be a RPG and is said to be shocking. Dave Hoffman gave another small hint today on his Twitter. When someone asked if the RPG is being developed in Japan or in the west, he responded with the following:
Well my job is to drive relationships with N American companies and create games that have a global appeal. Hm, did I answer you?
So it looks like Project X is being made in North America and not by the famous Square Enix studios in Japan.

This also gives further credence that the upcoming RPG might be Fortress, a western-developed sequel to Final Fantasy XII that was originally developed by Grin but has since switch hands to another western studio.
Dave Hoffman hopes to reveal Project X before E3, which starts on June 15th.

ugh. You would think they would learn. Capcom tried having western dev's work on their games and ALL of them flopped.

Plus from what I saw of the FFXII "sequel" before, it looked god awful.

I'm excited if this is Fortress. The tech demo looked cool and I really liked GRIN's concept art. If it really is Fortress, I wonder whether they are keeping it as part of the Ivalice Alliance or if they are giving it a new spin. I'm hoping it will be the latter.

I ain't playin' no western rpgs. let alone such tasteless jokes as fortress based on FF. This is gonna be so bad in that case.

I totally forgot about Fortress. But from what I've seen of the tech demo from months ago, I wasn't really blown away by it. Granted, it was only an early tech demo and I'm still open to the idea of an action-RPG-like sequel to FFXII.

What, there aren't enough sequels to FFXII already...?

There was only one sequel to FFXII and that was Revenant Wings. The other games you're probably thinking of: Tactics etc, are only part of the Ivalice Alliance range of games.

I love how people want the FF series to evolve, but when evolution is shown, they want it to step back. Personally, I think a Western-RPG/Action-RPG FF title is a great idea, and with another development team, they can provide fresh ideas for stories, characters, and settings. That's not to say it's guaranteed to be great, but it's worth a shot to see if FF can finally rival games that constantly kick its ass (IMO) like Fallout.

Well in my opinion "tasteless joke" perfectly describes 90% of Square's output since merging with Enix, and that has all been from Japanese development teams. Maybe this will be the kick up the butt that the franchise so desperately needs :)

I wholeheartedly agree... The most interesting thing the core development company has done, IMO, was NieR, and that's certainly got some hefty flaws to it. Outside of that, I've been relying of Dragon Quest, which is developed by a third-party company under Square-Enix's publishing.

Edit: Oops, even that was done by Cavia, so Squeenix deserve even LESS credit.

The point is, I've always thought the best move would be either a Western RPG-style FF or an FF by another company. Here, we've got a shot at both.

:mokken:

So it's being made here... :hmmm: There's hope for this game after all.
