I'm redoing IX because out of all the FF games, its the one I've played the least (mostly because I lost the discs!), but I've been looking at trying to obtain the Excalibur II.

The problem is, I have a PAL game and playing it on a PS2. I've altered the disk speed as others have said to do. But it'll still mean that apparently the game is slower but the clock is the same on PAL so that the 12 hr limit in order to get Excalibur II is down to 10hrs!!!

Has anyone obtained Excalibur II on a PAL game? Or is it actually impossible to do?

Apologies if this is on the wrong area mods, It's IX related and couldn't find the help section!

Help section is in the General Discussion area.

As for obtaining the sword, its impossible due the fact that 50hz games run slower. The only option is to use an Action Replay, then reset the timer before reaching Memoria. You could upload FFIX to your computer, download Epsxe, and play it on the emulator; you can change the video frequency and speed.

thats pretty rubbish if its true. But there's some ps2 excalibur II guides on you tube i think. although skipping the fmv's doesn't seem to work on mine, maybe because its an old ps2 and not a slim one!

Downloading the emulator may be an option, il have to think on that one.

I heard that the timer resets after 100 hours, Im not sure how accuratet hat is though, I was thinking of just playing through the game as normal then once Ive done everything and got to Memoria just let the game stand til it reaches that time, I can't remember where I heard that so I wouldn't try it if you don't wanna waste all that time

I'm replaying it again soon anyway and I have no intention of rushing it, so leaving the game swiched on while I sleep makes no odds to me, it's worth a try :monster:

Rumours are going around saying that it ain't worth it. To do it, your gonna have to miss out on many things, and even then, you might not get it...so I wouldn't really bother myself, but if you really want it, then, as Gabs said, I'd go for an Action Replay.

I read on Gamefaqs that the timer resets after two years. The clock may stop at 100 hours, but it won't reset until the time I mentioned. You could import the American version, and chip your PS2 as well.

I don't want it THAT much >_>

It's something I never found important enough to sacrifice the story over

Well, you're supposed to attempt this challenge after multiple playthroughs; by that time, you should get the gist of the storyline. :monster:
Personally, I like to think of it as a gift of your accomplishment, and what better than the strongest sword in the game?

That's slightly annoying, i thought it may have been possible on PAL. It's like Ruby and Emerald not appearing on the japanese version though. So i suppose il have to suck it up. apparently it can work on a ps3, so maybe il wait til i can afford to buy one of them and then attempt it then....

I get abit OCD with these things though so I could never -no matter how many times I played a game- skip through text witjout reading it or scenes if you ca skip them......

I'd never be able to do it even if I wanted to, I might just have to consider cheating to get it. That's always an option :monster:

Lol i was like 16 minutes late on Pal version.Shit i was angry,i tried from beggining of disc 4 again and was 15 minutes late :(
Anyway its possible in PAL version. In NTSC version its even possible with a perfect game, while getting all missable items.Theres a guide in Gamespot about it ;)

So if it is possible, il have a crack at it then. 15 mins is an arse!!! Think il have to have a blank memory card for all the saves though!

I think that if i had done everythin else once through, i could miss things just to get the one thing i couldn't get last time.

Yeh good luck!Skip all videos or it will be 100% running.Oh and try to get every dungeon area with max 1 random battle.Gl and have fun.

Excalibur II - SPEED RUN

I've been browsing through the internet; GameFAQS, Youtube, etc, trying to find a guide for a speed run to get to Excalibur II during a speed run.
Every guide Ive found says it is impossible on a PAL version of the game due to the lower speed of the game (compared to the NTSC version). However, every guide Ive read is made for a perfect game, Excalibur II run not a speed run.
Im not really bothered about gaining every missable key item and keeping all characters except Zidane at Level 1. I just want to speed through the game and get the Excalibur II legitamately.

Surely Square couldn't create a game where us Europeans are unable to get the most powerful weapon on the game due to a technical error. Isn't that illegal or something? Yes, a perfect game - excalbur II run is impossible on the PAL version. However, that's just due to personal preference in getting every item. Square would not have considered the fact that people wanted every item (regardless of its use and stll getthe Excalibur II). But, I just want to get to Lich as fast as possible making the Excalibur II mine. Then I can go back and get mainly everything else.

So, is it possible?
Remember - speed run

I looked around for that too, and no-one has seemed to have tried it (or at least not written a guide on it) I thought about having a go at it myself, but think you'd need to follow the guide for the perfect game Ex II and edit out bits you think will save you time.

Good Luck! :neomon:

Yeah. There is a guide on GameFAQs that gives you a load of hints on how to shave time off your clock. Granted some of them aren't legitimate (opening/closing disc tray during cut scenes, for example), but what you need to remember, is that you don't need to train whatsoever. It's all about how you equip your characters. Just make sure you're equipped properly for an upcoming situation, and give it your best.

It doesn't, it only changes colour.

That's correct. After your game time goes over into 100 hours, the timer changes to a red font. It doesn't restart the clock, however, for example, if your clock is red, and it says 10 hours, you won't get Excalibur II, you've been playing for 110 hours, not 10.

Apparently it takes 2+ years to reset to 0:00

This, however, is incorrect. Don't leave you're game on for two years. Stay green, like my font.

I don't understand what you mean by:
Stay green, like my font.
Anyhow, Ive read on Game FAQs that apparently it does actually reset after a very long period:

However, it apparently takes 2 years, 98 days, 12 hours, 6 minutes and 28.26 seconds of real time for the timer to restart. Your console might not survive that long, and you'll probably want to play other games during those 2 years. In the end, I think it would be ridiculous to actually wait for this to occur.
And sad.
