There's an extension to that rule to include words like weird, but I can't remember it.

The 'ie/ei' rule in German is so much easier to remember, as the order depends on which letter you pronounce. If it's said 'ee' then it's spelt 'ie', and if it's said like 'eye' then it's spelt 'ei'.

It is a total waste of my time. But face it, English is a mix of several other languages. Which makes it a language with very little logic. English, as we know it, only goes back to the 17th century. Well, maybe I am off by a few years. But it is a relatively young language.
