I've known a few obese people who were that way due to medication or medical problems. They'd diet, exercise, starve themselves, and it wouldn't make a different. Sometimes people can only help themselves with surgery.

I am vehemently against making that a law, because you're just one step away from enforcing laws that ban people of certain religions or races from eating at restaurants, and I'd think after the Civil Rights Movements, that we won't be venturing back into any of that.

So, yeah. Let the people eat wherever they want.

Attempting to control the population's habits by placing such laws is pretty stupid, though. Why deny someone access to a restaurant just because they are obese? Hell, if they feel like eating there, then let them spend their cash on a meal that someone else prepares. (Hell, everyone wants a break from the kitchen every now and then.) If the law was put into action all over the states, you can imagine how much of an uproar that'll create.

And that is exactly the type of mentality that makes obesity so prevalent. All of a sudden it's not a problem with self-control (or lack thereof, rather). Noooo, it's a disease! It's genetics! Bullshit. That's like saying alcoholism is a disease. It's complete crap spewed out by crackpot psychologists like Dr. Phil to make people feel better about themselves so they don't have to take responsibility. People don't like to place the blame on themselves, they'll put it on anything else they can, be it the restaurants, the genes they got from their great aunt Edna, or because God made them that way.

Yes, some people ARE overweight due to genetics. Some people really can't help it. But they are few in number. The rest are slobs who have no self-control and eat from boredom, stress, depression, and anything else because they don't know wtf else to do with their time so they shove the blame off on something else so they don't feel like killing themselves when they look in the mirror.

I kind of agree with both, while I do believe that most the real problem is in self control, there are some cases when it is a genetic problem, not sure about percentages though.

OT though, I dont think that a law would solve anything, people would just resort to eating at home instead of restaurants, it's as simple as that.

Back on topic...obviously that law would never pass, but I think it does point out a very good problem. Obesity is gross and a serious problem. It's sort of disgusting and ridiculous when people are dying from eating too much while other people in the world are starving. As for the whole "it's genetics" thing...I don't really buy it. My mother was really fat for a while, but when she actually joined weight watchers and took some control over how much she ate, she lost a lot of weight and looked great. I know a lot of people who did the same thing. I think a lot of people are obese now because of fast food, poverty, and ridiculously large portions. Face it, people are obese because America is a junk food nation.

Bingo. People on my dad's side of the family actually have a disposition toward being overweight, but are my dad and uncle fatasses? Nope. They both have a bit of a gut, but that only comes from their old age (metabolism slowing down and whatnot). They don't sit around stuffing their faces at home and they don't gorge themselves at the buffet line. They work out occasionally and they eat right for the most part. Yeah, they have a bit of weight, but they easily prevent any more from accumulating.

I'm sorry, I find it hard to take pity on somebody I see trying to squeeze under the table at a restaurant when they have 3 or 4 plates sitting in front of them. That's not genes. That's lack of self control. Maybe they have genes that predispose them for being overweight, but nobody's making them stuff their faces with food. That's entirely up to them. Even with bad genes, in most people it only makes it EASIER to gain weight, that's it. The rest is all lack of self control.

As for the law...epic lulz would ensue, but I really dislike the government stepping this far into people's businesses. First they start mandating what can and can't be in vending machines, then make restaurants change ingredients in the oil for fries and such, and now they want to do this? Come on, the government isn't supposed to babysit people. If someone wants to be an idiot and eat themselves to death, let them, it would decrease the surplus population

It's a person's own personal choice how much they're going to eat, and even though obesity is a problem, it has more to do with the world we live in today than anything else. It's funny, people always rant about separation of church and state and get offended when the two are even remotely close together...well what about separation of food and state? And this isn't the only shit the government is trying to control. I know in this state (and several others, I think) you can't smoke indoors, not even in bars anymore. The government, both on a state and national level, is really getting SO far away from a republic (or democracy, which people seem to think this is) it's not even funny.

I think the farthest the government should step in is making restaurants tell the health risks of something, kind of like how cigarette packs have to have the surgeon general's warning on them. That way, people will know the risks and the decision is entirely theirs to make.
