The latest in the string of Final Fantasy sequelitis hits, so let the anti-S-E flaming begin anew.

Though I don't mind the sequels myself, this news is a bit meh since it's on phones, so even if it did make it over to NA, I'd never bother with it. See how that works? If you're an FF fan, you don't HAVE to buy it! :smartass:

Square Enix is adding yet another entry to the long list of Final Fantasy games to get sequels. This time, it's Final Fantasy IV. Titled Final Fantasy IV: The After, it follows Theodore, a direct descendant of Cecil from the original game. Though not much is yet known about the game's plot, the magazine scans reveal that Theodore will be going to the Moon, from which his ancestors hail.
Unfortunately for fans in North America, that is not where the news ends. Like so many other games in Japan, this will be a mobile title that is playable on phones from the DoCoMo 903i series and higher. This means the chances for North American release are unlikely.
Final Fantasy IV: The After will be available for download in February of next year. At this time, there has not yet been an announcement whether the game will be a one-time download, but other similar games have been episodic in nature. For more information, look for updates in our weekly Japanese gaming column, Japandemonium.

I'll shift this over to SE news ^_^

And, good lord, I'd love to be Japanese, just so i could get these phone games, although i dislike the idea of a sequel to FFIV that stars a "direct descendent"

Why.......the hell do they have to tamper with out classics?! STOP WHORING OUT OUR BELOVED GAMES SE!

Ugh...this makes me sick. They're relying on the FF name to rake in profits and idiots keep buying it up *sighs*

This looks like it's gonna suck balls, but at the very least this project will likely not involve any changes to the original, considering it's set in the future.

Thanks for moving it to the proper place. And I would love to have some kind of sequel to IV, but yeah, the descendant thing seems a bit pointless. If you're gonna do it, start a new story using that world.

You know...I just remembered something. That old OVA, FF: Legend of the Crystals, is a sequel to FFV set in the future with a descendant of Bartz. But I never saw it so I dunno if it was crap or not <.<

It wasn't that great. Seemed kind of like Square handed over the use of the Final Fantasy name and a couple of staples to be used (crystals and a chocobo) to the animation company and let it pop out however it might. There are some references to FFV, such as Cid and more so his grandson Mid (who is featured prominently as a ghost), but considering it's a pseudo-sequel to my least favorite FF, I thought it was just okay.

BTW, I love how one vague snippet of info comes out, and already it's going to "suck balls."

Oh dear God a sequel to, of all games, FFIV!

Is anything not sacred anymore. :O

Why don't they just scrap the sequel to the FFIV idea and just call this game FFXIV?

There we go. No FF game is safe from having a sequel to bring down the original.

If they continue with sequels to the old FF's then they may as well just rename the franchise to Neverending Story.

Atleast it is on mobile phones and so the sequel probably won't have much of an affect on me but it is showing bad signs from Square Enix that they are going further back and creating sequels. Watch out for FFVI sequel Final Fantasy VI: The Fantasy Isn't Final within the next two years.

Lol, wow...and I haven't even finished FFIV yet. Actually I'm not even surprised. But yeah, I agree with Rydia on this.

I'm not even bothered by this, however, because apparently, it's only playable on phones. "This means the chances for North American release are unlikely."

Right. So I'll simply pretend that I never read this.

Nope. Not a damn thing.

Only you have read it...and it will nag at your soul <.<

Bleh. Mobile or not, it's still shows that SE is clearly willing to desecrate even the wonderful classics in the name of profit. Bastards. I'm fine with updating them and giving them gorgeous FMVs, but for god's sake, not sequels. Where's a real life Jenova to rampage through their offices when you need one?

DAMN YOU SQUARE DAMN YOU!!!

Desecrating my beloved IV I didnt mind the remake that much ( cause I like how Kain looks ^_^) but c'mon there has to be a limit to what they do to the games

I don't mind if they make a sequel of FF4, but I do mind making the game on mobile phones.

That's the only problem I have with it. If it were to come out on a system that I had, then sure, I'd decide whether or not to find out if it's worth my time. But the fact they're making sequels and spinoffs is not worth my time whining and crying. I dunno. Maybe I'm just not fanboyish enough.

To be honest, I can't remember the last time Tetsuya Nomura came to my house and threatened to shoot my cat if I didn't buy one of the spinoffs.

Square Enix revealed new info on Final Fantasy IV The After for mobile phone in Japan:

+The protagonist is the son of Cecil and Rosa named Cedore
+The story takes place years after FFIV
+Returning characters include Cecil, Cid, Kain, Rydia, Edge and Yang
+The game will have 2D graphics like in the original version of FFIV.
+The game uses an altered Active Time Battle system, where you can see enemies inputting their attacks while you enter your own.
+FFIV The After will be distributed in multiple episodes, which are downloadable from the mobile network.
+The prologue episode will be free of charge

Source is from /v/ though, so take it with a grain of salt, I'm waiting to see /v/'s source.

Well, I keep a spare Jenova im my wardrobe if you need one:wacky:

Anway, back on tpoic, yeah, i don't really mind a sequel, but come on, the child of the two characters, erk! and on mobiles, you can count me out from buying it (but I still might free download it from the net:wacky:)

Good, I think I'll need that Jenova

Not only is it the child of two main characters in IV, but it has one of the gayest names ever. I seriously hope whoever posted that info on 4chan is making it up, because if they're not....well, I know SE has no creativity but Cedore? Weak.

The only thing i would have against this sequel is that it's on the mobile phone...
And also, would it be in Japanese then? I certainly do not understand the Japanese language... :|

Duh. It's Japanese only, they're alot more into cellphone gaming than other places. Plus their phones are typically higher tech than anything else, so I imagine if you tried to play it on a different phone it would explode or something.

You actually CAN find emulators of Japanese phones so you can play the games on your comp, but they're hard to find.

Lol, i have only one word to say about this: Wow..
Makes me seriously jealous, ha ha ha!!
Cedore doesn't sound nice, lol...
