FF hate groups

Well the fact that they left Quina's recruitment as a sidequest and not a necessary mission...allowed me to overlook that fact. ^___^

True, true.

Although Quina being optional is NOT an excuse. Look at Yuffie and Vincent in VII. They both had backstories and had something to do with the story (especially Vince). Square could have done a better job on Quina. Actually they should have just made a human blue mage xD

VIII characters...well seeing as i never got very far in the game, i wont say anything about them cuz i didnt get to see too much of their personalities. But i hear everywhere that most of VIII's characters just suck xD

*fixed :monster:

The only characters that didn't seem to have the personality of a robot were Seifer and Laguna. You go play and worship Seifer and Laguna. They are the best characters in the game. I'm so disappointed you don't get to keep them at the end of the game. But that's why I am currently finding codes to switch up the character models so that I can have Seifer and Laguna. Once I do that, my file will be perfect.

I always thought VIII would have been better if Laguna was the main character. Playing as him was probably the most enjoyable part of the game for me.

Another thing that bugged me about VIII's characters is that nobody seemed to mind that Squall was a total bitch to everybody. They just followed him around like he was actually a real leader. Meh.

UGH Agreeeeeed! I found Laguna's story to be much more interesting than Squall's. Laguna had a very tragic story actually, but too many people overlook it. Even though he was a total doofus, I still liked him 500,000 times better than Squall. I thought that Kiros and Ward were more interesting companions as well...

ya rly.

You just like Laguna for his hot polygonic bod. :monster:

Nope. Not necessary at all. I'm just saying that the only game that I can back up 100% about the characters all being completely solid is FFVII.
I completely loved FFIX to death, but not all of the characters had backstories! ^__^

A back story does not make a character fully developed though. I would say that Tifa shows almost no character progression through out FFVII. Yes we see her back story, but that's it. And even then she seems to not have changed much from it.

On the other hand, we might not be shown much of a character's background, but if we're are shown different aspects of a character's personality then they could be quite developed.

Or sometimes the history could be very obviously implied.

I don't think Quina needed a back story. He/she probably lived in the swamp all his/her life so what could they have shown? Him/her training to be a chef? I wouldn't say that Quina is a wonderfully developed character, but we do see him/her help Eiko out with her cooking which is something different from his/her usual gluttonous behavior.

Sure, IX could have done with out Quina and it wouldn't have change much if at all. But VII could have done without any of the characters except for Cloud, Aeris, and Barret and the story would not have been changed much. Those were the original three characters, and the rest weren't added until the game was nearly completed. But they make the game much more interesting.

Tsk tsk!!
I do not think that a backstory is necessary at all to make a good character great. It suits some characters well...like the guys with a mysterious nature...but for others, it doesn't make sense.

There was only one game in which the lack of backstory bothered me to a really high extent: FFVIII. I am not normally bothered by a lack of history unless it seems like the character was rushed. I know for a fact that Tifa was a rushed character, hence why her entire history was based off of Cloud's past. As much as I admire her personality, I wish that she had her own piece of history.

Back to FFVIII...the only reason that the lack of backstory bothered me in this game was that five of the leading characters; count, FIVE characters had the exact same story. Grew up in an orphanage, joined SeeD, lost their memories to GF. That being said, I found most of the character interaction to be very repetitive and dull.

It's that bad? O_O Wow....

Lack of backstory can be alright, so long as the character actually has an interesting, non-cliche personality that isnt one-dimensional. Of course, if the game developers dont mind throwing in back stories for most characters and can pull it off well, then i'm all for it.

Most of the characters in FFVIII are one dimensional. The only character that spawns some form of life changing realization in the game is Squall. The rest of them, for the most part, retain the exact same outlook throughout the entire game.

But Laguna and company are different. They're even a much bigger part of the game than Squall, imo. To me, those flashbacks had a great deal of history in them and seemed much longer than the entire game.

And also, giving the fact they didn't have much that happened to change their outlook, that is a reason why most of them are boring.

Ugh exactly, even though Laguna isn't the main character, you see more realization and understanding in his segment of the game than you do from Squall's perspective. Laguna falls in love, loses everything, chases his dream...

I liked Laguna alot when i played VIII a few years back, unfortunately i never got to see too much of him because i was too lazy to deal with the damn junctioning so i sold the game.

Know who there SHOULD be a hate group for? No character specifically, rather, all those fanatics who rant about characters so much that they make us hate the character *glares at Cloud and Sephiroth fanboys*

I dont really think Square/SE has ever made a bad character, or at least one worthy of hatred. Some of their characters have been rather sub-par though...Quina, Freya, Wakka, and Kimahri come to mind.

Hahahaha… I honestly don’t understand FF hate groups either… except for the obvious good laugh.

I can see the occasional joke or someone having a little fun with a fanboy or fangirl during an argument, but to go on… and on… and on… about the dislike for a fictional character (Especially after your points been made) is just a wee bit obsessive, in my opinion, not to mention silly… ;)

Sorry, just realized you said this, and I had to say THANK YOU. xDDD Seifer was the only reason I finished the game. And Laguna has grown on me over the years, so I appreciate him now to :P

I hate some characters plainly because they are useless.

Indeed. The ability to protest a certain character is good. To oppose them in a hate group is fine by me. But it does grow old after a while. If you have a dislike for a certain character then you really don't want to talk about them that much. Plus it seems to offend people:P.
