FF hate groups

Telmaen, I agree, I agree, I agree!
I wasn't agitated with Squall and Rinoa right off the bat...the agitation kind of grew on me as the game progressed. I hated Squall's negative attitude and how he couldn't pursue his ideas on his own without someone telling him to.
And as for Rinoa...I think it was around the 5th time that the plot shifted and sent me on a never ending spiral of quests to rescue her stupid butt...that's when I started hating her...

I loathe FFIX because everyone is dressed like they're getting ready for a play. Classy crap. Plus they're like, midgets. I can't stand playing as a main character that looks all snazzy or has a completely undisturbed mind. They make the game uninteresting and leave you with shit to wonder about their history. Plus, they're midgets again, even in the Cinematic Sequences. :mad2:

... During the beginning of the game, they ARE in a play ¬_¬

Midgets? ... Eiko is six years old, Vivi is nine years old. Zidane and Freya aren't even human, so they don't even need to follow human skeletal structure. Garnet has just turned 16. I don't know any sixteen year old girls that are seven foot tall. Steiner and Quina look small because they're kinda wide, and Amarant is hunched over all the time.

It never ceases to amaze me how people think this game has bad graphics. I played VIII and thought: "Oh god, the textures are all pixelly >_<". I then played IX and the textures were far less grainy, animations had improved and so on.

Anyway:
I don't HATE any characters, although Squall's attitude makes me want to strangle him and beat him over the head constantly with a sledgehammer. I can't see what's so bad-ass about him? Is it the Gunblade? Oh please ...

I've never actually hated a character before. Sure there were some annoyances here and there (Rinoa as a damsel in distress, Steiner's childish attitude sometimes) but I don't truly hate any characters.

However, I must admit that Vaan really got to me quickly. As soon as I saw him, there was an immense dislike right off the bat. I believe it was his appearance that first annoyed me (what's up with his clothes?) , then as the story progressed, he really irked the hell out of me.

Reason? I don't know, really. Perhaps the fact that the whole story wasn't exactly Vaan's story at all. The game did not revolve around him, so I never had the chance to get close to his character at all. He even said, "I'm just along for the ride" somewhere in the game...yet why did the game gave me this feeling that Vaan is extremely important (due to many screen shots of him) when in reality, he's really not?

Sure, there was the whole event with his brother dying, and Vaan wanting revenge or whatever, but I felt that as the story progressed and more plots were revealed, everything about him and his brother were slowly forgotten.

But it's kind of hypocritical of me to be saying that because I was really bent up on Squall when FFVIII just came out...My agitation towards Squall sort of grew on me as I realized how people flocked around his character simply because of the way he looked or because of his "whatever" attitude and cool sword.

I found Cloud and Squall equally as irritating and whiney.
Cloud has to have more fanboys than almost any Video Game Character there is.
Then again, I think the only decent Main Protagonist was Zidane..
But I hate how Seifer was overlooked because of Squall. Where it was Seifer who was the only one who bought out any sort of emotion in Squall. FFVIII's Cast was diabolical, excluding Seifer and Zell.

Naww... I didn't know that. :monster:

Wow, nice explanation ya mustered up there.

IT'S BECAUSE THEY'RE MIDGETS, KTHXBAI. :monster:

And now I leave this thread because I have no desire to debate with someone who thinks one game is ENTIRELY better than the other.

Then why the hell are you bitching about them being dressed for a play, IF THEY ARE DRESSED FOR A PLAY? It's pointless :monster:

Hating a game for it's chibi-ish characters is pretty shallow. Do you hate VII as well?

I don't think IX is completely better than VIII. I was just saying that the graphics were better. I've not played much of VIII yet.

Lol. I actually agree with Grand_Lethal. FFIX did have better graphics than FFVIII. In case you numbskulls didn't notice; the graphics get better (not worse) as the series progresses. FFIX didn't have bad graphics, it just had a cute, chibi style design.
I remember at the beginning of FFVIII, when Rinoa walks over during the dance, my friend was sitting next to me and she was like, "Damn, she could saw a tree in half with those legs." Lol. On account of how jagged they were.

Then why the hell are you bitching about them being dressed for a play, IF THEY ARE DRESSED FOR A PLAY? It's pointless :monster:

Because there's only one part of the game that's a play, unless something else comes up upon beating the game that's a complete surprise to me. :monster:

Yes, actually I do. But for different reasons. Besides, at that time, it was all they could muster. :monster:

You also have to take into consideration that I haven't played the game much, so my opinions are biased off a shallow amount of gameplay. :P

Excellent points Rhea. Personally, I think that the problems lies with overrating and underrating. People fall into either or both of these extremes, and there's nothing more biased than an extreme opinion. Hating a character's guts or idolizing them or making them out to be something they're not (like you mentioned) isn't the best way to approach the subject. Sometimes the fanbase of a character can get so annoying that you start to get annoyed at the charcter itself. I think it's best to recognize the awesome traits and deeds of a character, but you also have to recognize their flaws or when they screw up.

At least you're honest :P I say give the game another go: it's a very good game if you look a bit deeper ;)

Heh, sorry for coming of strongly. I just get annoyed when my favourite characters are dissed for something like that. And, did I see correctly? Someone other than J.Rulia that doesn't really like VII? Wow. I didn't realise that such people existed :P

Well, like I stated before at the end of page two, the only reason I first disliked FFIX was because of the character designs. Compare them to the two FFs before and the ones after, the character designs of IX are chibi-styled. And with the exceptions of the earlier FFs, IX's charcters are the black sheep of the flock.

But, yeah, I agree that IX does have better graphics than VII and VIII. But that is how the system works. If VII and VIII were released in 2000, FFIX's character designs would still be better. Anywho, I believe that why I love FFVII so much and others do too is that the storyline is so great.

BUT, as we are on the subject of VII and VIII bashing, Barret and Zell where pretty stupid character. Barret was just in there for a little comedy and to be the long range character. And Zell, IDK. I just don't like him at all.

Here are my most brought up characters that I dislike/hate/find irritating:

Tidus - I have been rethinking my 'hatred' for Tidus, and now that I do think about it, and actually take time to consider everything, I've finally come to terms with the fact that about 50% of the reason why I dislike him, is because of his English VA. I just can't get past it. I'm sorry to all of you who thought the English VA was fine, but I don't. It's awful, and actually makes the entire character seem twice as irritating as he really is.

Vaan - I don't really know what it is about Vaan. I don't hate him, but I don't give a shit about him either. I understand what they were aiming for with him as the main character, but I don't like it. The way he looks irritates me, and his personality is one that I don't usually like either. The, 'gung-ho young lad who follows his dreams and helps save his people' type of shit. I don't know why, but I've never found that intriguing or believable.

Wakka - He's big, he's dumb, he has that, 'I will do/believe whatever my religion tells me to believe/do' thing, and I find him obnoxious, and I don't find him funny even in the least. He is just a character, that if he were a real person, I would just genuinely not like.

Irvine - He's not cool. He's not a cowboy. He's a self-proclaimed 'ladies man', and I have no idea what girl in her right mind would want him. He claims he can snipe with the best of 'em, then chokes immediately. In short, he strikes me as someone who thinks they're 10 times better/cooler than they really are.

Quistis - I don't know who could find her interesting at all. There are female characters that are far hotter than her, with cooler clothing designs, and more interesting personalities. I dislike her immensely, because I find her so bland and boring, and yet she seems stuck up to me, and a little miss know it all. Please, get a personality and grow some better tits.

Rinoa - I don't really find her irritating per say...what irritates me, is when people talk about how strong and what a 'bad ass' she is leading this movement, when....to be honest when I played the game, I didn't really see what she was actually........doing. Without those other two morons to assist her, she couldn't have done shit. And most of this 'resistance movement', regardless of what people say, was obviously started just to piss off daddy. Recognize it for what it is people.

I quite like the character designs in IX (except freya and quina). I could really care less if the characters are "chibi" or not, i mean it's a fantasy RPG for christ's sake, it's not supposed to be 100% realistic. It's just plain shallow to hate the characters for chibi looks. Oh and for anyone interested in reading it, this is a translated March 2000 interview between Famitsu Magazine and Sakaguchi about IX, and he discusses IX's chibi design and VII's original chibi design: http://www.ffshrine.org/ff9/ff9_interviewsakaguchi.php

Tidus is called "whiny" and "emo" alot of times, and frankly, he has a right to be whiny and emo due to his situation. But his voice...oh god, it's so AWFUL. His stupid American voice actor is the reason he comes off as so whiny and emo! They could not have done a worse job if they'd hired some junior high kid who'd just hit puberty.

As for wakka...i agree. I hate his hair, i hate his stupid Jamaican accent, and i've known plenty of people in real life who just blindy follow religion like he does and i HATE those people with a passion. At least Wakka slightly wisens up in the end though...

VIII characters...well seeing as i never got very far in the game, i wont say anything about them cuz i didnt get to see too much of their personalities. But i hear everywhere that VIII's characters just suck xD

FFIX's character designs are the 3D version of th earlier FF games where the characters were also Chibified if that's even a word.

There's characters that I don't like and sometimes it's fun to make fun of them when your bored and have absolutely nothing else to do. If I really don't like a character, I'll just not use them if I can help it. They'll be severely underleveled but oh well.

I just thought of something. People who complain about how "chibi" IX is should take a look at the FF3 remake on the DS. That would get them to reconsider their opinion of IX.

Thats why Freya and Quina always remain underleveled. I actually did give them both a chance in my current (6th) file...but i just dont like using them. Quina's Frog Drop is a pain to get, his Mighty Guard skill lasts like one friggin turn, Freya's Dragon Crest is a pain to lvl and her Rei's Wind is simply pathetic. Vivi + Steiner + Zidane + whoever else FTW

(Sorry, I haven't played FFX for a while. My memory is hazy.)

Very true. As much as most of us don't like Tidus for his personality, he does have a right to bitch. (Unlike Squall :-D) I don't understand why his voice acting is great. When FFX came out in the US they made a big deal about James Arnold Taylor.

Wakka - He's big, he's dumb, he has that, 'I will do/believe whatever my religion tells me to believe/do' thing, and I find him obnoxious, and I don't find him funny even in the least. He is just a character, that if he were a real person, I would just genuinely not like.
Now that you mention it....I really don't like Wakka. I remember Wakka being very into Yevon, the religion. Wakka would not take no for an answer. Wakka was so stubborn about Yevon. It had to take soild proof to make him realize that Yevon, the religion, was courputed. Also he was rude to the Al Bhed. (Hrmm he reminds me....)

FFVII has no pointless characters; most FFs do, but FFVII does not. I can give a lengthy 1-2 paragraph minimum description of each character's past and reasons to why they are in the storyline. The fact that I can back each character up like that has nothing to do with favoritism...it's just that the game really doesn't have any pointless or history-less characters.

Nope. Not necessary at all. I'm just saying that the only game that I can back up 100% about the characters all being completely solid is FFVII.
I completely loved FFIX to death, but not all of the characters had backstories! ^__^

It's not exactly necessary for a video game character to have a detailed history...

Haha, very true, but in RPGs, which rely heavily on story, it's kind of expected and helps make the story more interesting.

I kinda think Cait Sith was pointless though...but he actually does serve a purpose at the temple of the ancients and no other character in the story could have filled the role he played there, so i guess he really isnt pointless.

If you wanna talk about a pointless character, let's talk Quina. IX's story could have remained exactly the same and suffered no losses had Quina been left out. He/she adds absolutely no depth or intricacy to the story, all he/she adds is some mild humor.
