To those who have no idea what Im talking about (have you been under a rock?), Im talking about 4 year old Madeleine McCann who was abducted from her room in a resort 12 days ago in Portugal. She had her 4th birthday last week and is still missing. The reward has gone up to £2.5m, given by numerous people including JK Rowling and Sir Richard Branson.

The news has gone global and footballers including Ronaldo and Beckham have given pleas on TV to the kidnappers pleaing for Madeleine's safe return to her family. A British man has been arrested and denies having anything to do with the case. He believes he is "a scapegoat for the police" and has a witness saying he was with his mother at the time of the abduction.

I personally dont know what to think and I cant help but be angry at the parents for leaving their children alone whilst they ate in a resturant!?

Surely this is stupid behaviour and they have been bashed for this behaviour, but the focus is mainly on finding Madeleine safe and sound. I do hope this child is found safely and returned quickly.

It´s the biggest important news right at this moment on Portugal you know!

There haven´t been many cases like this one in Portugal over the last years...but i can tell you the portuguese police is giving it´s best to find the missing girl! I would dare to say that when a portuguese children is missing there´s not half the same resources being used to find the girl!

And if you´re in Algarve you can get out of the country in about 1hour so i don´t think that Madeleine is still in Portugal really...but who knows?

Most of the times you find that the kidnapper is always close by and most of the times he´s actually a "friend" of the family.

All i can say is that i hope they find her still alive and well...

I do find it strange that the parents leave their three under age children alone at home even if they went to check on them every 30 minutes...but i won´t even blame them as i can only imagine the pain they´re going through.

On a different note (and i´m not trying to insult anyone) the british media especially Sky News i believe as been completely bashing Portugal and criticising our police who is doing the best job possible!

Sorry, Sapphire, but quite a few of us probably have no idea what you are talking about (American news agencies tend to ignore abduction victims in other countries). Considering that MILLIONS of children are kidnapped each year, it's would be a tough sell to show this as a good debate topic.

With that in mind, what are we actually arguing over? :P

Its not something to agrue over. I wanted to post this to see what other peoples points of view and opinions on the matter are. Its big news across Europe right now.

I am part of the philosphy that people go missing all the time. Kids are abducted and murdered so what actually makes one of the mass media cases? I mean they are all terrible and heinous but why is it once in a blue moon celebrities will put in rewards then what starts is a whole media mess with footballers trying to get spotlight attention(if you know david beckham thats all he does) to "ask for the child back" as if people are more impressionable to has-been football stars.

Every one of these cases should be treated seriously without the need for celebrity faces all over the news, the money Richard Bransons throws in is nothing compared to what he's got or what he'll get back by people thinking "There's that Virign airlines, Branson was so nice when that little girl went missing lets buy those tickets."

I just find it strange and dissgraceful that when 1 famous face pops in, the news is reeling in them and suddenly everything becomes an overblown frenzy than a hunt for a missing little girl. I honestly do not think any of them actually give a damn about the girl and only about getting their caring face on TV.

You know what else gets on my tits. When the news reports come in indicating you should only care because the girl was British. If she was mexican it wouldn't have even hit the Uk tabloids never mind the headlines and celebrities.
Headlines like "Plane crash in greece, 250 dead. 5 OF THEM BRITISH!!!!!!"
Britian and American are extremely bad for it, thats why I don't watch the news and only heard about this now.

Of course the British media are going and covering it, its a British child, a Birtish citizen that has gone missing. And maybe its gone to celebs is because the child is so young, she was 3 when she was taken. Yes, many other children younger have been abducted across the wrold, but British celebs are helping because its a young British child that has been taken.

British Celebs are egotistical idiots. They've been told by there agents to go "care" to give a few reassuring words on TV. What annoys me though is that through this we are taught that criminal acts and deaths are normal: murders, abductions, rapes, accidents are commonplace however they are only grevious, despicable and most of all only worthy of our attention when they happen to a British citizen.
Which to me seems like an element of fascism. Are we so high and mighty that the only people who die that we should give a damn about are our own people?

I believe this girl deserves people to care for her and worry for her through the proccess of the media but she does not need to be paraded around by celebrities and headlines ao bold and outrageous you'd have thought that Hitler and the SS had risen from there grave and staging the sequal to invading Poland by the amount of stress put on the story.

The fact is that without this overblown media frenzy the police would have still done their job, and still come to the same conclusions. Plastering footballers on TV does not help find abductees. It's a piece of the new we don't need, sensationalism.

Do you see any other countires broadcasting about Britain and its civlivans dying? I dont and I have watched TV in many different countries. We dont just braodcast about our own people, we mention how many people have died in a bomb in Iraq or a bush fire in Oz.

Jimmy's post says it's the biggest news in Portugal right now.
I know we mention how many people die but it's always the fact that we make sure that the viewer gets across the fact that "British people died so now it's actually important" out of 200 they also make sure to tell you that 5 British people died in a way to stress how important those 5 British were compared to the other 195 "who gives a damns what race they were we have white people dead here".

And about other countries not broadcasting British civillians, it's because it's a universal thing. We all seem to create this close minded society in modern civilisation where it's ok not to care about predicaments in other countries aslong as it is not directly associated with your own country as far as modern politics allow, it's ok not to care about the plight in africa, it's ok to let countries bomb each other, I don't care if a bunch of kids died in a school bus near paris, because it's got nothing to do with us, no British are involved so thats A-Ok.

Its big in Portugal cause thats where its taken place ...

They dont stress how important British people are over others. This is the way you are looking at it. They tell us because they were members of our country and are no longer with us. See it whatever way you wish, I cant be bothered to continue arguing with you. This thread is about that case and not how the British media are with others.

Call me lazy, but I couldn't really be bothered reading properly through the other posts, so forgive me if I'm just repeating what's already been said.

Personally, I blame the parents. It's awful behaviour on their part. Were they at home, would they have left their children at home by themselves while they went out to a restaurant? I seriously doubt it. So why do it on holiday? It's probably worse because they're in an alien community, and pretty much everyone is a complete stranger.
But that said, it's still a disgusting thing to do to kidnap a small child like that. I really hope that she'll be returned home soon, but I'm afraid I can't see this having a happy ending =\.

i feel sorry for the girl and the parents but the parents were asking for trouble just leaving the kids on there own like that. it would have been a bit better if one of their children was a teenager or something looking after them but it was a 4 year old and then the baby twins. im sorry but talk about bad parenting!!!!!!!

This is what I think:
You saw the distance where the restaurant was and the hotel room, the was no way in hell you could see the girl then from where they were sitting.

PLus why only take Maddie and not the twins as well. Me and a friend were discussing this, if someone wanted to kindnap properly they would have taken the twins as well as Maddie. Plus why leave the little girl and the children therw without a babysitter, so thy can go for a slap-up meal?????

Its said when they got back the door was open. THey assume that it was broken into. How do you know that the little girl didnt go out herself and look for her mum and dad???

Its just one of the numerous questions that you ask yourself.

ur a complete twat!!! show some sympathy for fuck sake
i couldnt give too hoots what gets on your tits cuz its got fuck all to do with you!!!!
Of course british media are going to cover what happens to british ppl.
ITS THEIR JOB!!!! im sorry but i find u quite pathetic

anyway i really hope they find the girl alive, what happened is terrible

Less of the language please.I do agree with a lot of his comments though.

The parents were fools. The NSPCC says you do not leave children unattended, for more then a few minutes.

Every half hour they checked. What if one of the children got sick/choked/injured themselves either waking up/during sleep?

Why didn't they use the babysitting facilities available?

I hope she does come back safe and well. But her parents should have known better.

I agree completely.
It's not about "O LOL THER BRITISH, SO TEHN TEH BRITISH MUST FINK TEHR MOR IMPORTUNT!"

It's an innocent 4 Year old girl, show some sympathy for pieds sake.

There's a lot of innocent 4 year old girls out there suffering too, Madeleine isn't the only one. If people really do care about lost children, they'll go out of their way to support like minded charities.

Thats what I thought when I thought it was a cover story and the parents had done something to Maddie. There was a CSI episode where the child is accidently killed and the parents fake a kidnapping. Horrible thing to think, but I thought it was odd neither of the younger children were taken.

Just hope that poor girl is discovered alive and well.
