That's right I've never played a Final Fantasy! Some might even find it funny to know I had to google my random question during registration "Who is the playable character in Final Fantasy VII". However I'm a huge Kingdom Hearts fan and I'm here to ask a few questions about FF!
1.Do you have to start from the FF I to understand the story line?
2.If not which game do you suggest I make my first FF?
(I tried FF VI but starting the game in 2011 made it difficult to get into graphically.)

Thanks guys!

Each FF title has no relation in terms of storyline at all. Meaning, FFII is NOT a sequel to FFI, and so on. They just have some common elements such as spell names, recurring mascots, monsters, etc. But there are a few exceptions. As long as the titles have the same number, they are story related. For example, FFX-2 is a sequel to FFX. FFXII: revenant wings is a sequel to FFXII, FFVII crisis core is a prequel to FFVII.

Since you can't stand old graphics, I suggest you start from FFX. It's straightforward, has a beautiful story and decent graphics. it's for the PS2.

Only the recent Final Fantasy games have decent graphics (X, XII, XIII) but my personal favorites are I-VI.

If you have a DS, maybe purchasing final fantasy III or IV would be a good start. III is flexible, while IV has deeper main characters and story. The same can be said when comparing V and VI, but there are only GBA remakes which looks almost identical to the first.

Another choice is if you have a PSP is to get Final Fantasy IV, the after years collection to get the full story of IV with the best looking sprites so far. I and II also look great on the PSP.

Personal suggestion is to start with 6. Then go 7/8/9- as they are better graphics. And as people suggested 10,12,13 all have good-to-great graphics.

This way you have started with worst graphics so it will only get better.

Why you didn't just join a KH forum I'll never know xD But I suppose you might be interested in the FF characters showing up so:

Kay so

1: There is no overall storyline for every final fantasy. Every numbered final fantasy is different in terms of story, characters and graphics. Also final fantasies such as Final Fantasy 10 and Final Fantasy 10-2 share some of the same characters set in the same universe and same world. It it only games like those where it may be difficult to understand the storyline. The only Final Fantasy game that combines characters and crossovers between FF games is the Dissidia series.

2: Your first final fantasy depends on what you are in the mood for so I'll explain a bit of each age of FF.

Final fantasy 1-2 and 3 don't have much storyline points going for them but they provide the essense of exploring huge worlds and uncovering powerful hidden weapons, etc. They are fun if you have the looting spirit in you. FF3 has updated graphics on the DS.

Final Fantasies 4-5 and 6 have a bit of the same exploring feel, only these games actually have really nice story lines with very well developed characters. Out of this bunch many would argue 4 and 6 being their all time favorite Final fantasies. I personally recommend VI for it's Amazing characters, story and gameplay(especially the advance version). Out of these 3 FF4 has a remake with updated graphics on the Nintendo DS.

Final Fantasies 7-8 and 9 are a bit more updated graphically. Despite what you've heard about all three of these games the hype that each gets is severely overrated. Each of these games are equally satisfying in their own way. Final Fantasy 7 has a massive following, most I suspect it's mostly due to it being the first 3d final fantasy and the first final fantasy game for many gamers out there today. It has numerous unnecessary final fantasy VII sequels. Final Fantasy 8 is the first game to have proportionate characters. The graphics are updated from 7 but many complain the battle system is either too easy or too hard. Final Fantasy 9 is on par with 8 in graphics but feature a more cartoony look but still retains the great FF stories and gameplay fans love. Despite what you hear about these three games all three are equally great and memorable.

Final Fantasies 10-11 and 12 are breakthroughs in the FF series. The sense of adventure and exploration seemed a bit absent for me in 10 as it contained a more linear gameplay experience that fans were used to. It still however has a great story and very interesting gameplay. Final Fantasy 11 is an MMO...I haven't played it but I know many who hate it and some who dislike it. Final Fantasy 12 was a breakthrough in gameplay as it had a real time battle system but it doesn't deliver as much when it comes to character development. it's story however is linked to a spinoff final fantasy game(Tactics: war of the lions) which probably put some people off. Many complain about it's story being boring and the ridiculous main character, but I can't personally judge. 12 brings back more of the feel of adventure.

Final Fantasy 13 was released last year and it was a hit or miss with many FF fans. It's graphics were spot on but it's characters, gameplay and story was heavily criticized. I can say that it was a decent game, but when compared to some of the previous final fantasies it's lacking is any sense of adventure. It also contains cutscenes that seem to never end and a battle system that has been deemed either too hard or too easy.

Now 3:

Final fantasy games aren't cherish because of their graphics. Each game has a story to tell and each game is unique in it's own way. If all you want is graphics you can just skip to the store and pick up FFXIII but I strongly advise you try some of the earlier FFs. My personal favorites are VI, VIII, and IX but that's just based on my preference in story, gameplay and musical score. ^_^

You don't like FF VI because of the aged graphics ? Really ? :rage: :rage::rage:

... - okay, calms down...-

FF VI has wonderful music, well developed characters, and a exciting storyline, so don't put it down because the graphics are 94 SNES chibis .

No, like everybody has said above, all of the Final Fantasies are different, including the storyline. I would recommend X. It has decent graphics, good battle system, and you will recognize Tidus and Wakka from KH.

FF VIII would be good too. The graphics are still pretty nice for it's age, and you'll know Squall - Leon- from Kingdom hearts, though the characters don't speak, and everything has to be read by grey boxes, just like in 385/ days if you're played it.
:)

Nah you don't have to start from the first one, each final fantasy game has a different storyline. I'd recommended starting with Final Fantasy IX or Final Fantasy VIII, they're both pretty great games to play.
