Hey there folks, I thought I'd chuck a thread up where everyone can say what hardware/software they use to get their let's plays up and running. Think of it like a user guide for people who want to know how to set the stuff up etc :)

I'll start things off.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hardware:

3 x 1 RCA Phono male to 2 female Audio Gold Splitter Adaptor

1 x Canon STV150 3 phono to 3 phono AV cable

1 x Dazzle Capture Card

I have all of this working with a scart. Dazzle capture cards will not work for HD.

Software:

Pinnacle Recording Software - this comes with the Dazzle and will only record the screen (including background music etc)
Audacity - This is free online (legally etc) and is used to record your commentary.
Sony Vegas - This is to merge the video and commentary recordings. Any other video editing (such as cutting random battles/deaths etc) is done here too.

Method of recording:

- Create new folder for videos and commentaries
- Open up both Audacity and Pinnacle
- Press record on both, as close to the same time as possible
- Talk/play/etc
- Press stop on both, as close to the same time as possible
- Save them both to the wanted folders (where you made those folders earlier)
- Open them both in Vegas (or other editing software such as Windows Live Movie Maker)
- Merge everything together depending on your software
- Render video...this will take some trial and error to find the right memory-to-quality balance
- Upload etc

Any questions, just ask. I'm not great at this though...I just followed step by step help from a mate :)

EDIT: All links to amazon/ebay are purely for example purposes and not intended as advertisements.

EDIT 2: Splitter type has been edited! Wrong ones were provided at first. Sorry about that :(

a good tip for syncing audio together is to do a countdown from 3 to 0, and do something in the game to show that the start point from when you said go, I normally hit x to confirm loading the save, or hit right to trigger movement in a menu, this can help to sync up sound better
