I can't say I'd approve of physical punishment, but I understand that in certain situations a level of 'smacking' is in order. Personally, I'd rather take something they enjoy playing with away as a common punishment in stead of physically harming them.

I believe mental punishment is far more rational, but again, only in moderation. In all honesty I'd try to teach my kid(s) right from wrong in any way they could understand, as opposed to hurting them and explaining afterwards. Basically, I'd do the opposite of what my mother did. As a potential parent, I'd say learning from my own parent's mistakes will only make my attempt at raising children all the more successful.
