Ok , so in defense, before someone asks me, why ask such a silly question.I'm not American, reason why I draw attention on, why call a sport that uses both hands and feet...FOOTBALL. Since I've only known America to call it Football and soccer respectively.
It should be called...rugby. A game that does involve all the elements of "Football", with out the padding too.

And soccer..(which is an ok name) should be called permanently Football. As prior to it begin a game that mostly involve...well the foot :wacky:.

I know it's may comes off as a rant, but for argument's sake...why is the terminology messed up? I always wondered why.

Well that's not hard to answer. You kick the ball with your foot :/
Only the goalkeeper uses their hands.

Because Americans just have to bastardise and fuck up everything that makes Britain so great.

Couldn't agree more that the world should call it football, since it's older than all other varieties, and obviously better.

A goal keeper only uses their hands...as part of the ruling as is the only one to do it within restricted boarders. So as such, the game is played...with almost most of the time...the foot...(maybe the occasional header and yorker like Ronaldo) but American football, uses the hand more than the feet, so...hence my misguided understanding of why it's called that o.0

I like you.

I've never quite understood it myself but that's what they call it and that's that. I'm more bothered about the fact that they call football "soccer"

It's because of them we have to call it soccer too now, damn them!!!

I really couldn't tell you why it is called Football. I am American and I've always wondered the same thing. But American football was invented around the 1920's or even earlier. As for soccer, I couldn't tell you why for that either.

Actual football was first developed in the early 1800s, I think. You wouldn't recognise it as the sport it is today though, since it was pretty much no holds barred until the late 1800s.

^^ couldnt have put iit better myself

American Football is RUGBY only a more ponsey version of it and theres lots of hand contact with the ball....or whatever its called seeing as it's not actually a ball

I despise the term soccer, where did it come from?! Its FOOTBALL for christ sake. No hand contact is allowed unless your the keeper defending your goal.......

Hm...I'm not sure. I've wondered why we refer to it as "football." After all, players only use their feet for kickoffs, field goal attempts and punts. That's excluding running, of course.

It definitely makes more sense that soccer is referred to as "football" in other countries. I do, however, feel that soccer is a cooler name.

There is nothing cool about the word soccer. It makes football sound too girly. I don't think I have ever despised a word as much as I despise that one

Girly? How very interesting. I'm inclined to disagree with you, for I don't quite see how that name makes the sport seem girly. Perhaps that'd be the case if it was called "Fairy Prancing" or something ridiculous like that.

In the end, the important thing is the game--not the name.

I agree! :monster:
The point of sports isn't arguing about what names sports have, though it is generally accepted that it makes for very interesting confusion...

Why not rename A. football to rugby? What's the point when there already is a sport called rugby?

Why is it so much like rugby? The original A. football game was derived from rugby and many terms and rules stem from it. And with this in mind, I find it hard to believe how you British folk can slam A. football down when we actually took a game of yours and created the best sport this side of the Atlantic. You should consider it a compliment as it shows the genius of English rugby for it ultimately led to the Super Bowl!

I can see this thread being a Britain v. America arguement! Why is the football (American football) in America called football? It's just the way it's evolved, I guess. Not really a reason to argue over it. As a British person, I refuse to call it soccer but things are different accross the pond and nobody can really change that, we just have to live with it!

Its football to me, alwys has been, always will be. As for the soccer name, Im not a fan of it, just doesnt suit the game IMO.

the main thing about it is that soccor was started as a national sport after football and they were going to use the name football but it was already used and the reason football is called footbal is unknown to me

I would like to meet somebody who knows something about Australian Football. I always found American Football boring. Yes, it is a pussy version of Rugby, the game it evovled from. I prefer Football (soccer) to them all. Although, Australian Football is even better. I just do not understand the rules.

But Ice Hockey is the best. ;)

rugby is the basis of football (american) and rugby is a native sport in ...
i forgot but it is a native sport in one or more countrys

It's not the only sport that Americans have twisted for their own ends. They took a popular playground activity here in the UK called rounders and called it Baseball.
