Why is Aerith's death so shocking and heartbreaking?

I think it's memorable because they killed the "nice" girl. Usually that doesn't happen. It's kind of like the movie Psycho where they kill the main character (or one of them) halfway through the movie.

And even though she was dead, she is the one that actually saved the world at the end by destroying meteor. Some say "But Cloud killed Sephiroth!" Yes that's true, but Cloud was always stronger than Sephiroth as proven in the flash back. He just couldn't get to Sephiroth because of the barrier he put around the Northern Crater. It wasn't until Shinra got rid of the barrier than Cloud was able to go after him.

The main problem was meteor which was going to crash into the Earth and destory it. Without Aeris, meteor wouldn't have been destoryed.

Uhhh... Where did u hear this? As far as I know Seph was a first class SOLDIER and Cloud's hero long before Cloud even thought of becoming a SOLDIER. So it's only natural that Seph was much stronger than Cloud all the time. Cloud had 2.000(manner of speaking) people with him to defeat Sephiroth.
Ummmm.... *looks at topic*...
I think Square always tries to add tragedy to their games and they usually do it by making one of the main characters suffer, killed, dissapear, etc...
It really is painful, but I think it adds a nice spice to the game, since all we see nowadays is a: And they lived happily ever after...
Even though the above concept always leaves us with a sense of satisfaction, it's getting reaaaaally old. However no matter how old noone likes to see a game or movie end with all the goo guys dying and the bad guys ruling the world. So I believe Square did a thing to gap these two game/movie ending options. They have the happy ending but a character is missing and being missed from celebrating with the good guys...
I remember in FF7 i got this feeling. And also in FFX. When Yuna tried to hug Tidus and she fell to the ground, I felt a soaring pain within like my heart was crying... and when he faded away and she was whistling at him... omg.
But despite these feelings of sadness I was always left with a beautiful and deeper feeling of completion... a feeling of joy at that game... I felt like: "what a great game. So sad yet so nice". and I love Square for doing that.

I think she was just referring to the part in the game where Cloud threw Sephiroth into the Lifestream after being impaled by him.

Cloud had no idea that Sephiroth was coming. All he did was a have a blank period where Sephiroth was trying to control his mind and make him (meaning Cloud) kill Aerith. No she didn't deserve to die. She was a beautiful and gentle creature with the purest of hearts. She and Cloud could have had something really special if Sephiroth hadn't killed her, but yeah it was really shitty of Sephiroth to attack her from behind. Cloud didn't even have time to react to save Aerith. I think if he had seen Sephiroth, then he would have, but alas he didn't.

personally i didnt know it was coming, at all, when he shoved that sword right through her back i was put into a state of utter shock, mouth open, eye widend, i couldnt believe it, aerith was such a nice person, and she never seemed like the kind to tragicly die like that, witch is what made her death so shocking, personally after the shock came a massive surge of hatred for sephiroth, witch im sure square was hoping would happen to most gamers, i hated sephiroth so deeply that i pushed through the rest of the game as fast and powerfully as i could just to kick his god forsaken ass, but alas i was probably filled with more hatred than the average player, considering she was lvl 86 when she died , i mean damn, having a videogame villin waste over 5 hours of your life is pretty sad, and frustrating, but literally when she died i said nothing during the cutscene because i was so befuddled that i couldnt even come up with a word porwerful enough to show how deeply angerd i was, after about five minutes i finally said somehitng, "F*** you.." was the only thing i said, of course directed a sephiroth, a character from a game that cant hear or understand anything i say to him lol

Aleksunder This Thread Was Not Made For You To Come In And Say You Didn't Like Aerith/aeris. It Was A Thread Created For The Questioning As To Why Her Death Is So Memorable, Not Which Couple Is Better Than The Other. This Is Your Verbal Warning For Spamming. If I See It Again, You Will Recieve An Infraction.

Alright. You'll be getting a PM from me soon to talk with you.

Here's what I meant to say:

It WAS memorable for me, but it was memorable because Sephiroth is awesome and he speared her through the gut.
I don't like Aeris all too much, and when she died, it was an important event for me because Sephiroth killed her, thusly cementing my love for Sephiroth. The music was pretty sweet, too.

Would that have been more acceptable? None of this is sarcastic, and I am entirely serious in my statements.

I'm not Pro-CloudxTifa or whatever, but nor am I Anti-AerisxCloud. Let me make that clear.

That's fine. You can have your love for Sephiroth, but as I stated before, this thread is for posting your reasonings as to why Aerith's death is so memorable for you and not which pair you prefer, etc....
That being said, this post here makes much more sense then the one posted previously. It's important we stay on topic in our threads here because some tend to get off hand, people tend to start arguing, etc...
As for the CloudxAerith/CloudxTifa, this thread has no relevance to pairings, just your opinions on what made her death most memorable for you.

I think it was best that she'd die anyway. I mean she was a good character and all but.....It's a game. i don't get how people were actually crying about this scene. I mean if she were to live then the story wouldn't be as good and wouldn't have been as good. And advent children would lose half of it's plot.

It's a lot more memorable than the other deaths in FFVII because of the fact Aeris was innocent from the start, a nice girl trying to make a living, and ultimatly trying to save the planet. One might argue that Cait Sith #1's death was also to save the planet at the Temple of Ancients however remeber that until that point Cait Sith was a Shin-ra spy.

Erm, I don't like it when people say, "It's just a game." We all know it's just a game, but the main point is what the game means to you. Like, what did Aeris' death mean to you? Hmm, from what you said, obviously nothing because of the fact that it's just "a game." That's not how it goes, buddy. =/

Anyway, back on topic...Aeris' death was memorable for me because of the fact that she was really innocent and likable. (Well, for me anyways.) It's also shocking that someone from your party actually dies. One of the main characters, at that. I did not expect it at all. She saved the planet and made a huge impact on everyone, especially our dear Cloud. To me, she did A LOT, and then for her to die...it was just really sad! The whole song also made it memorable for me. It suited the scene and theme. I didn't cry though...probably close to it though.

And Leo and Tidus weren't?

I was actually quite glad that I never had to see Aerith again. She was the only one that was not physically strong in my group(magic is another story). I don't use magic a lot so she was a pain to me.

Another thing. FFVII was one of the first games I played for the PS1 and one of the first 3D games I ever played. The was the first time I ever saw a video game character get impaled like that, and even though there was no blood, it was still a bit traumatizing. I expected Cloud to pull her out of the way. I was pretty numb for the rest of disk one.

for me it was so shocking is because i wanted to see a romance flare up like on ff10 wen tidus and yuna kiss, i wanted that to happen with cloud and aries but they didnt really know each other well and when they were just getting cosy and comfortable aries is killed.

I knew she was going to die before i even played the game, but what made it memorable for me was that i didn't expect her to die in a cutscene. When she went off alone i expected her to end up fighting Sephiroth on her own and defeating him, but then die from injuries sustained during the fight, like Galuf in FFV. I think the way she was killed made Sephiroth a coward for not even giving her a chance to fight back. I can't remember my exact reaction to her death, but i remember i had to push myself to continue playing

I think Aerith felt more real than just a videogame character, that's why I think her death was so shocking and heartbreaking.
