Why do people die?

I watched a movie the other day about ther town was seiged by motorcycle people and how the some of the remaining residents had to save the own from the gangsters where one of the charctersd who I believe was an archer had to kill one of them but she didn't want to seeing she never killed anyone with archery before. The other character who was a black woman countered that she can kill and that she is no different than the rest of them and as I cold as it sounded, it was nevertheless true especially when you kill for the first. That brings me to the point of this, why do we even die? I had another thread on killing before but now I want to know if this is an appropiate question to ask if you had to do something like that if you are a soldier or a police officier after you had commited the act. I hate to kill and I hope I never have to but at the same time, I know I am going to die one day and I don't want to be killed.

It is kind of is contradictory but nevertheless I am just a human and as humans we often contradict ourselves. I just want to know why do we die when do? I know there is no straight answer for this and I may never find but I like to believe that it is for our soul's benefit if we move on and return to wherever we came from. I believe that there is a God and HE/She/It will take when it is our "time" to go and thar we "choose" that "time" to return to God but other than that I do not know of any reason why we die. Can anyone even those with religions enlighten me on some matters? I know I am talking to strangers but I feel like I can tell you guys things.
 
I'm non-religious, and I believe that we need to die at some point. If everyone lived forever then we wouldn't embrace things the way we do, we wouldn't appreciate things. Plus there's overpopulation, spreading of disease (unless we were immune to that.. then we'd just walk around dribbling all over the place with shrivelled skin and white eyes), and then the funeral business would go down teh craphole! D:
We need to die. People need to have something they know for certain, something they know they cannot change.
 
I'm confused...you seem to be asking why people kill others as well as why people die. Your post isn't very clear at all.

Why people die: the body deteriorates over time, just like everything else in nature. Cells don't last indefinitely, as as our bodies grow older more and more functions start to go awry. Plus there's a myriad of diseases which can speed up the process, as well as natural disasters, man-made disasters and good old fashioned freak accidents.

Why people kill: some do it out of self-preservation, some do it because of duty, some do it because they're forced to, some do it because they're sadists, some do it because they're just plain out of their minds.

Why people die when they do: some die because it's their time, some don't. You can't just choose when you die (well, if you plan on committing suicide you can), I mean how are you supposed to choose not to be randomly killed by a drunk driver? Obviously people can cut down on risks, but there's no way that we can choose to lead a long, full life, it's all up to chance (or god, whatever you believe in).
 
People die from many reasons.

Unfortunately, people get into accidents and their lives are cut short.

Also, someone can not appreciate the life they do have and commit suicide.

Or you could live your life to the fullest and longest, based on how much you care for yourself. If you took shit care of yourself you will die sooner than someone who cared for oneself. However, this is no always true due to genetics.

Who cares why people die? It's not just people, trees die, animals die. It's just the way the world works.

Also, I do not believe God is the one that chooses when we die. He is just there to accept us after we pass. =/
 
Key points have already been said here. I will just generalize it though.

Death is necessary to an extent. Let me take a quote from Our Lady Peace:

Take death for example:
A great deal of our effort goes into avoiding it.
We make extraordinary efforts to delay it,
and often consider it's intrusion a tragic event.
Yet, we find it hard to live without it.
Death gives meaning to our lives.
It gives importance and value to time.
Time would become meaningless if there were too much of it.
If death were indefinitely put off, the human psyche would end up...
Well, like the end of a twilight zone episode.

That is all to be honest. My words would only create rambling, so I'll end it there.

Well that question can be taken in two ways... By "Why do we die?" do you mean "What causes us to die?" or "What purpose does death serve?".

Since the first one should be rather obvious I won't go into it more than saying that all living matter deteriorates, that includes our cells and organs.

But I think it would be more interesting to explore the second question, namely "What purpose does death serve?".
Most people will say that (logically speaking) it's necessary to prevent overpopulation and the wasting of natural resources. It also serves to nourish other beings (either by fertilizing the soil or being eaten) and to remove unnecessary elements from our lives (it may be cruel, but a 90 year old man can't do much for society).

But then, all of that reasoning just leads you in a circle:
The problem with overpopulation is that it becomes hard to support so many people's lives, but if death didn't exist we would have no need for this support.
The only real reason wasting natural resoruces would be bad is because when we run out we we would die out, but again, without death that wouln't happen.
The concept that death fertilizes the soil or feeds animals is also mute, as fertilization and eating is only important for supporting life, and since we could not die neither would be a problem.
The concept that a 90 year old man isn't doing much for society isn't an issue either, for if we cannot die then nobody would need to contribute to society anyway.

So it would seem from a realistic logical standpoint, eliminating death would eliminate all the factors that death is thought to be necessary for.
So I won't try to solve the issue through logic based on cause and effects of death.

From a religious Christian standpoint, death simply serves as a transition from this life to the afterlife. Even so, it still doesn't explain why god would put us here in the first place if we were destined to end up in an afterlife. It's just one of those questions that couldn't be answered without directly speaking with god himself.

Now for a more psychological approach, if the physical and spiritual explanations for death are beyond our grasps, perhaps we can find some reasoning within the human mind. From time to time I've heard people say that death can be viewed as a release, and this makes sense to me. If nobody could die then they would retain their consciousness for all time, people would be painfully aware that they are destined to toil upon the earth for all eternity.
Anyone who says life doesn't have hardships hasn't lived, and anyone who has lived will tell you that the hardships never end. With that in mind, living forever would be torture.
This isn't even mentioning the massive rise in crime that would likely follow. Why on earth would a man hesitate to do something terrible if he knows that he'll survive it. We can't logically even keep a man in prison for his whole life if he will live forever.


So from a psychological standpoint death simply keeps us sane and gives structure to our societies.
 
Whoa in my oppinion thats a really silly and POINTLESS question. Some people die of illnesses, some are murdered, some people live to an old age where their their bodies are weak and cant keep working anymore, and they die. Wer not immortal, hence wer gonna die someday, u cant get around it so really theres nothing to wonder about. People live then die, its just one big cycle.

Simple biology needs people as well as other organisms to die. If we didn't the planet would be able to support so many beings.

Some say we die because it's our time, or because god is calling for us. I believe we die simply because if we didn't their would A, be no meaning to life any more, and B, because the planet isn't built for endless humans.

We die because our bodies arent immortal. We cant live forever its as simple as that. We dont die because by staying alive we somehow lose the meaning to life....thats silly xD
Also endless humans is a weird way to say it. As long as the human race reproduces, (granted some cataclysmic event doesnt wipe us out) there will always be humans being born. The number of deaths though keeps it to a somewhat more even number.
 
As George Carlin said "Death is caused by swallowing small amounts of saliva over a period of time." :P .

I never took much thought as to why people kill, or why people die, I just know that it's a part of nature. You might as well ask, why do dogs die, or monkeys, etc etc. If everything lived forever, there wouldn't be enough food for everything thats for sure, and etc etc.
