....ramming the huge materia into Meteor? The only explanation is Cloud saying they need to study the huge materia to defeat Sephiroth.

But even with that, the huge materia "missions" start when Cloud is not with the party. They listen to Shinra's plans to destroy Meteor and defeat Sephiroth, then it was basically "we must stop them from attempting to destroy meteor!"

FF7 is, was, and likely always will be my favorite game ever, but I can't think of any reasonable explanation for this.

I would think it'd have to do with 'we can't give the huge materia to Shinra' or something along those lines.

Sadly, it's been a while since I've played that far into the game though, so I may completely off.:wtf:

I think.......its to do with Cloud&Co not wanting to let Shinra Inc. destroy the huge materia, because it holds more knowledge than the usual small ones the party uses, which it does it holds the ability to transform your Mastered materia into Master Materia.

Just another way the Materia system is linked to the story, and is not just a level and skill system.

In the space ship they say something like materia was part of the world and they couldn't sacrifice it and let it get destroyed. As someone else said here, it has knowledge needed for the planet. Besides Shinra is always trying to use materia and mako for all there purposes. Being rebels to keep the precious things alive on the planet was reason enough.
