Jecht.

I finally got my hands on a psp and picked up myself a copy of Dissidia, but I'm not intending to play the hero side (save for story mode) and am looking at working on mastering a villian, however I'm struggling to choose which Villian I should go with:

I'm personally not interested in playing as Sephiroth, and I have little love for Garland and Ex-death (I'm still pretty annoyed that Gilgamesh didnt make it in but aww well), I find the Emperor a bit too pompus and I've never liked Ultimecia, so that drops my choices list down to:

Kefka
Cloud of Darkness
Golbez
Jecht.

From my understanding, Kefka is pretty poor at advanced level, so I've pretty much struck him from the list, so I'll be looking at one of the three, however I am leaning more towards Cloud of Darkness and Golbez as Jecht seems to be a bit of a popular choice.

So answers on a postcard to this thread and help me solve this dilemma thanks in advance xD

Jecht

Because his combo's are pretty strong, also, because he has an awesome freakin ex-mode type thing, where he can block anything. He is probably a lot easier to control to. CoD is VERY hard to play as... Anyway, thats my opinion.

Actually, I find cloud of darkness pretty good. Her second aerial BRV combo is awesome although I don't like her speaking gibberish and her aerial HP attacks are hard to avoid (0form and fusilade). I also like golbez's combos although he only has 2 main HP attacks (cosmic ray is awesome). I personally dislike jecht as he is cheap, his combos are unreliable. But they are all good and it is really actually, for you to decide.

Either Jecht or Golbez would be your best bet. I can slaughter countless enemies in a row with Golbez without much effort =P
And Jecht's BRV to HP combo attack is imber. Although its hard to master, its well worth the time and effort.

Me personally, I'd go for Jecht. His attacks are very quick and harmful. Consider his HP attacks, which are vile and ruthless. It's sometimes hard fighting against him when he's on the ball. So it's all Jecht for me.

Kefka, he's a lot stronger than people say, he's just a tad technical is all

The thing is that you can set up a multitude of situations from which the opponent has no choice but to get hit by one attack or the other, and then usually get hit by a third attack after that

The damage that he can do by combining attacks when you get the hang of it is immense, additionally through careful timing with Waggle Wobble Firaga you can combo into Trine, which is kinda sick

There are a lot of Kefka attacks that you should rule out, a perfect Kefka setup uses both Firagas, Scatterspray Blizzaga, and either Meteor or Ultima

For HP attacks, stick to Trine and Havoc Wing, but Forsaken is also great for stomping newbies

Additionally, Kefka's EX Mode is well above average, he's far from being a weak character

Jecht's range is kinda short. Anyway, I don't get how to chain his BRV to HP attacks. Can someone help with that? Yeah, kefka is cool as well with scatterspray and his attacks are well varied but is he better than golbez?

I really believe ruling characters out without even trying them is immensely stupid. Is it not much more important to find who you enjoy using most, but oh well, its your loss

This all depends on whether you plan on playing real people or just computers. If all youre going to do is play computers than I guess Jecht would be best since hes pretty simple once you get the gist of using him.

Against real people however, Jecht becomes a bitch to use. It takes godly timing to do his combos due to the lag, and not to mention that he's lacking alot in terms of range. But if you can overcome that, than Jecht is beast.

CoD is requires you to play very smart, as she is a very unpredictable character. The opponent must always be guessing what CoD will do, so the job of the CoD user is to stay one step ahead.

Youre completely off about Kefka. Kefka is poor at low level of play, when you have no idea how to use him, like most people. When you actually do know how to use Kefka though, he can pretty much rape everyone, especially in EX mode

Golbez is top tier, nuff said, just learn his long ass chains

I agree with kumo. Try the other characters. Never judge a book by its cover. Why don't you like sephiroth though?

Deep seated hatred with him being pushed in our faces with every SE spin-off game, I've been playing quite a bit with a couple of different ones, and I find that my 2 fave characters so far are definatley Kuja and Golbez, I actually like ex-death's style of play, it takes some getting used to but hes actually rather decent if you get used to pulling off his counters, not to mention you can trap people by using your ground void and spark allowing you teleport to them and delta attack them for a very quick break.

Of all the Ex-bursts though I definatley enjoy ex-deaths and golby's the most, Golby's chanting while summoning the twin meteors is awesome and ex-deaths neo algamest is pure awesome (who cant love trapping your opponent in a tiny sphere and crushing them in your hands? :P)

Although CoD is quite interesting, I do find her a tad linear, whatever she does, Kuja does it better...and with style.

Kuja is really hard to land a hit on against a decent opponent. CoD has heaps more varient and accuracy - aerial combo 2 - awesome! I'd pick more of power than personality. Exdeath is quite easy to avoid. Since you like golbez, use him.

Golbez would be a very good choice.
He also has about 3 or 4 BRV attacks that can branch into an HP attack, which personally is epic.

Actually, there is a new trick discovered that deals consistent hp damage in EX mode. Notice how Kuja has auto magic that attacks the enemy in EX mode. Well, if you go into chase and you survive all three rounds, Kuja's balls(thats not disturbing in any way) will attack the opponent and deal hp damage

Golbez's branch off moves are cool but the groundones are hard to time. Also, WoL also has 4 and Tidus has even more.

No, golbez has the longest combos in the game in terms of attacks being used, and they are fairly easy, since they only require a little bit of dodging

Back to jecht, I never understood how to time the BRV into HP attacks. Can someone tell me because if you can do that with every hit, jecht will kill very quickly.

Here is a video concerning Jecht's combos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5m98aSIthY

As for recommendations...I would say to play each character individually first to see which ones match your playing style. If you want a character that is easier to use in competitive play I would recommend Golbez. If you want a character that would pose a challenge to most players I would recommend CoD (Cloud of Darkness) or Kefka. Of course these aren't necessarily set in stone but that's how the meta-game currently works.

I would seriously try sephiroth though. He is quite good. See how well he performs before choosing the others.
