Just level at whereever your at presently. Go to the area that's the toughest and fight relatively close to a save crystal so that you can heal frequently, and save when needed so you don't lose tons of progress if you happen to die.
If you pick a relatively challenging area to leve up at, you will see your stats boost quicker and then you will be better prepared to continue the adventure into the game.

Well, I found that chaining Malboros with Gladius at this point was pretty good for leveling up, so try that. However, there are far more Coeurls near the Western end, so you'd be better off chaining around that area. Also, there's a save crystal not far from the exit, so you'll only have a short distance to walk should you need to recover.

a great place is henne mines at pithead junction b i think? its where you push the swith and 16 flans come down from the ceiling. they are very easy to beat if you have fira. it took about 15 minutes or slightly less to get a 100 chain, and with 3 characters, they give around 400 exp. i trained there till all my characters were lvl 35.
