When to switch Jobs?

I feel like I understand the game fairly well but one thing I'm not sure of is when to switch Jobs.

My original game I pretty much picked from the begining what each char would do and then soon as they could make a step in that direction I would make it (ie, thief opens so i immediately move to it). Should I be sticking to jobs longer? At least on Squire and Chemist?

I realize you should probably stick to Jobs until you get the abilities you want out of them but is there a less generic strategy? is there enough time in the game to just master a job before moving to the next or is that just stupid. Should i play through all the jobs then go back and master them later?

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I know it's generic, but I switched jobs after they had the abilities I wanted. I kept Black Mage and White Mage till the end though, and I kept each special characters unique class.

Ramza you do need to switch around, but you should have a lot of abilities unlocked before a certain point in the game, where it's one on one for a boss.

I just can't remember which abilities are recommended ><

I myself like to change the class as soon as the weapons come open to buy for the class, and then if that class works good, i use that class till theres a better class. I find some classes are better then the other so i pick that class at the start and work towards it.

If you want you can always just train a lot to master each job, but you can't master them all just going threw the storyline. I usually master Squire for some reason, because i seemed to always get job points in it. Then i try my best for different abilities that will be helpful and i dont usually get ones that i don't see needed. So i dont usually master jobs unless i stick to that job most of the game.

I suggest you just go for good abilities.. try to have some different skills for each character. But some can be similar. I try to get all my characters that are warriors to get the double sword ability. Anyways i hope that helped.

I tend to keep a job until I learn all the abilities, often at the start I have Ramza as a squire, and a black mage, chemist and knight/holy knight (in the case of Agrias)

Later on I turn Ramza to more power based classes like Monk, black mage becomes a white mage, the chemist becomes an archer and the knight turns to geomancer (or alternate jobs to unlock job)

I try to open all the classes I can and then I got a lot of the abilities and can swtch to what I want. Getting Ninja is mainly what I go for so I can have two handed monk or martial arts (fists) for ninja. So yeah look up what class you want and go for it.

Here's a list of the jobs (taken from Gamefaqs) and the preresquisites to unlock them:
Squire None
Knight Lv. 2 Squire
Archer Lv. 2 Squire
Monk Lv. 2 Knight
Thief Lv. 2 Archer
Geomancer Lv. 3 Monk
Lancer Lv. 3 Thief
Dancer (females only) Lv. 4 Geomancer, Lv. 4 Lancer

Chemist None
Priest Lv. 2 Chemist
Wizard Lv. 2 Chemist
Oracle Lv. 2 Priest
Time Mage Lv. 2 Wizard
Mediator Lv. 2 Oracle
Summoner Lv. 2 Time Mage
Bard (males only) Lv. 4 Mediator, Lv. 4 Summoner

Samurai Lv. 3 Knight, Lv. 4 Monk, Lv. 2 Lancer
Ninja Lv. 3 Archer, Lv. 4 Thief, Lv. 2 Geomancer
Calculator Lv. 4 Priest, Lv. 4 Wizard, Lv. 3 Time Mage, Lv. 3 Oracle
Mime Lv. 8 Squire, Lv. 8 Chemist, Lv. 4 Geomancer, Lv. 4 Lancer,
Lv. 4 Mediator, Lv. 4 Summoner

As you can see, you need to level up a wide range of jobs to unlock the more advanced ones. I suggest you train Ramza as a Melee fighter; for this, go from Squire to Knight. Use this job until you learn most of it's abilities (they're rather useful throughout the game). Switch to Monk then Thief, then Geomancer whilst gaining the required level to unlock Ninja. You could use this class throughout the rest of the game simply because you can attack twice.
