I always thought that our self-awareness, intelligence, etc. is what made us human. But then I came across this little comment on Y!A:

babies are not self aware, yet are still human. some animals are self aware, i wouldn't call them human. brain dead people are human, yet have no measurable intelligence. it can't be emotion, because there are psychotic people who just desensitized for whatever reason. the list goes on. the only thing that is consistent in all humans, is our 23 chromosome pairs.

so, 23 pairs of chromosomes.

edit:
and maybe our understanding of death, although elephants mourn their dead, and that kind of implies that they understand death. obviously, they aren't human.

This is interesting as fuck. I'm not sure what to say about it, since I don't feel enlightened or insightful enough (on this topic) to have an opinion, so let's hear yours. I'm interested and stuff.
