Are there any good sure fire methods of gaining weight?

I can't say i tried them all otherwise i wouldn't be asking, I weigh 135 last i checked and I'm 21. Yeah you can see the problem there, anyway i've been told by the time i hit my twenty's i would start gaining weight no problem, not happening right now.

So i have two problems at the moment with weight, gaining it and keeping it.

Any tips?

Eating a lot (the right foods - meat if you're not vegetarian, carbs etc, not tons of fat and sugar) - frequent small meals are best.

Going to the gym and lifting weights.

The only situation that I've ever seen someone want to gain weight is for medical reasons. I don't usually work in pounds but 135 does seem quite low.

I would go ask your doctor and not people on a forum... unless it was a health and lifestyle forum. Yes people can provide tips but I would strongly suggest seeing a nutritionist or a doctor and make a plan for gaining weight.
I will go ahead and admit I watched an episode of Oprah :-)ffs:) and gaining weight properly can be more difficult than losing weight (according to that doctor that comes on occasionally... :ffs:).

For example, going out and eating more fast food and drinking excessively isn't the right way to go. It would have to be carefully monitored and all that.

Those are just my thoughts though.

I was in your shoes once. I was about 125 going through high school. Started hittin' the gym and eating right and I'm around 160 now and still gaining. It's a very hard thing to do and takes a lot of dedication. You need to work out and take in enough food each day to make gains. Go to the gym about 4 times a week and do some heavy lifting. You don't really need to do any cardio as you're trying to gain weight. But if you must, keep it short to about 10 to 15 minutes maybe twice a week.

As for food, you need to eat about 6 small meals a day, possibly 7 on workout days. Meaning eat something with at least 300 calories and about 24g of protein every two hours. You'll want to take in at least 2,000 calories or more EVERDAY. You need a good amount of protein as well. So try and take ine 1.5 grams of protein for each 1 pound of body weight that YOU weigh. So basically, since you weigh 135, you need to take in 202.5g of protein everyday. Also need to take in a good amount of healthy carbs and fat. You can look those up online and see what to get. At night time, when you sleep, you need to eat some cottage cheese. Cottage cheese contains a casein protein which is a slow digesting protein. So basically what that does is, keeps you full during those 5 to 8 hours of sleep so your body doesn't eat away at the weight you've been putting on. If you don't like cottage cheese, GNC sells powder casein protein that you can mix with milk or water.

If you have any more questions, let me know. I can type about this stuff all day,

I was thin all my life, I couldn't even get past 150 lbs. There was a point in time when I was working at Budget and I actually started gaining weight past 150 and I got close to 175 lbs. I then started having stomach (and general digestive) problems and lost weight rapidly. I went down to about 135, and I'm 6'2", so that was way underweight for me. Once over problems, I managed to get my weight back to 150. Working a job that I walked around a lot and all the walking I would do going to classes in college I think was my biggest issue in gaining weight.

Now, I'm 185 lbs, thanks to a job where I sit at a desk 9 hours a day. I was as high as 195 in the summer time, so I put on 45 lbs in like a year and a half. So I'd say you're probably somewhat hyper and move a lot. Moving less will help with the weight gain.

Now, even though moving less is a solution, I suppose it doesn't have a guaranteed effect. There is always body building and strength training that will help you gain weight as well. This does take a lot of time and dedication though, and it's not for everybody (it certainly isn't for me). The added strength is certainly a bonus as well as the extra weight. Seeing as how you may join the Navy, getting into great shape wouldn't be a bad idea. Might be worth a shot.
