Was it just me, or does anybody else think that the villians in FFXII lacked that certain formula Square uses to make their villians so epic?

I really couldn't get behind any of the villians in this game. The main one, Vayne, doesn't have a personality really. And Cid and other Judges all
die too fast after they're introdeced
.

Your thoughts..........

The villians I like the most, and have the most personality in all FF games are the Turks in FFVII :D
The whole shinra corporation is bad, yes, but them Turks are a class of it's own.
In this game they dont seem to have any personality at all, only time you actually get to see the judges expressing any feeling is when they need to kill eachother. But that's about it.
Vayne doesn't seem that bad, really...
I don't know, I just don't like them villians as much in this game as in other FF games.

Yeah. I didn't think anyone, heroes OR villains, had much personality. In terms of villains I guess Cid is the big one (plot-wise, not level-wise or end-boss-wise) because you see him on and off throughout and because of his tie-in to the story (I won't spoil). And yet even he just seems to kind of fizzle out. There just isn't much spectacularity going on. :D

You're telling me you didn't have a passion to see Judge Bergan die? You're telling me that the whole Gabranth transformation at the end was just...bland? These guys really played their part well. The oly one you really don't encounter much of until the end is Zagrabanth wafter the final boss.

Vayne comes into the game as a Seymour like character in a way. He comes in with his tlak of peace and promised futures, etc. But then he's got his underlying motives that only a select few know at first, but is made known that he plans destruction and power all for himself. Vayne's a murder to everyone in his family except his little brother Larsa, and he's plotting dictatorship and to be the new Dynast-King. He's a hated villain in my books.

I agree though, you didn't see much of them though until the very end, and even that wasn't much.

Vayne does not want the same in the end as what Seymour. And you are telling me that previous FF villains, i.e. Kefka and Sephiroth, Ultimecia for example, had outstanding personalities? Just because Vayne wasn't a psychotic bastard like Kefka, doesn't he mean he was not a villain. He was very cunning, and didn't rush into things, but in the end, his lust for power got him killed.

vayne was a true villian and very deceptive one too his character devolopment was quite shocjking it clearly showed how cunning he was a true villian if you ask me not like those unrealistic villians

He murdered his own father? I call that bloodlust. Hell his "neccessary" procedures are freaking gruesome and scary. This Final Fantasy had some of the best villians, IMO. You're right that it didn't follow the old formula for developing a bad guy but I really appreciated the change. This was a game that didn't want to conform to standard FF norms and I'm glad the main enemies were so different.

You still had the main enemy behind it all (the Occuria) and then their evil "puppet" (Vayne) but you also had all the judges and Cid. The thing that made these villians great were not that they were all lunatics, but that they were realistically evil. The villians were very well developed. Each and every one of them had their own set of motives and they kinda of meshed and blended together into a very complex thing. It wasn't the straight forward "Kefka gone wild" formula.

The judges were split between upholding the laws of Archadia and following direct orders they knew were wrong. Cid wanted to manufacture nethicite to control and harness his power... to become God-like. He was willing to let Vayne use the nethicite for any means just so he could test it. Vayne wanted power, land, control. He didn't care nearly as much about nethicite. And the Occuria themselves were split. They had one rebel who was basically fighting on the same side you were, even though he was helping and influence the evil party. And you were on the side of the evil Occuria, even though you were good. I don't really see how you can say the villains weren't good or developed.

o.o I actually think the villains here are quite scary. The fact that they're more realistic than any other FF villains gave me the feeling that they're more dangerous and evil. If you think about it, it really is scary. Reminds me of a serial killer in a way. They act like any normal person, with charm, charisma, and intelligence...but deep down lurks the darkness, and that, my friend...is more dangerous because you'll never know their motives behind their actions.

Now, with some typical FF villains (Kefka, for instance), what you see is what you get. In FFXII, it takes you in this roller coaster ride and you start to question exactly how many villains there are because you realize that there are too many. And they're all cunning too. So watch out. :P

I don't want to spoil the game for you, and I know you know a lot about the game already even though you haven't played it through yet, but Seymour and Vayne have more in common than you think. They don't want the same in the end, but they commit very similar acts prior and during the game, as well as they both come off as "Great" people in the beginning, only to just be hiding their true intentions.

Yea but no one likes Vayne in the beginning of the game. I did... but the characters don't. I think they have some similarities, but I think Cid and Seymour have more in common.

Oh I know what you mean, don't worry ;)

I see all of your points when you guys say that they're more realistic type villians. And I like the fact that FFXII's villians are a little more of 'grown up', in the sence that they're what a regular baddy would be.

But what I'm saying is that they were not invested too much in the story to grow on you, or for you to start relating with them. They didn't have that much mystery or depht to keep me worried or surprised. I saw the murder of the king coming a mile away. To me, these villians were to predictable. And call me old fashioned, but I like a little insanity in my villians.

My favorite villian would have to be Cid due to him being the first Cid in any final fantasy game to be a main antagonist. I do not consider him a villian, though, more like that of a anti-hero.
