Video editing software

Are there any good video editing programs out there that I can use?
What I have is a short anime series, but all episodes are in the same file, so I'd just like to split them all into separate files. Anything that I could do that with?

you might be able to use the windows movie maker version for the windows XP or the one for the vista. that might work. the problem that i have with it is that the files dont like to play on the DVD player so you might need to convert the files into a different format.also you could save try and save the file in portions using the movie maker, then convert the files one by one, next you could try putting them on a CD or DVD and then use a DVD player or a PS2-3 or something like that to see if it would play.
