Since the Phase 3 closed beta is going to be ending in 2 days, I figured I might as well take some screenshots of what I considered most interesting about FF XIV so far. I've been spending countless hours on this game, and I've seen just about all of the basic features the game has to offer. This thread should give people who will be playing in the open beta in early September a good idea of what they will encounter when they start playing. These are thumbnails, so you can (should) click them to view them in glorious full 1680x1050 resolution.

First, a relatively low level monster with a tower far in the distance. You can actually walk around the tower, but there's no way to get inside at the moment.

Dodos are plentiful around the starting camp (they have a habit of following you around as well), but will crush you if you engage them in combat. You need to level up quite a bit to actually be able to defeat them.

Some monsters, like these Fireflies, are found exclusively in caves.

Speaking of the environment, I personally love how background features gradually fade off into the distance. You can also see the gorgeous weather effects at work.

This Aldgoat Billy doesn't look very impressed by my spear.

On the other hand, this Island Crab just looks plain mean.

Here's a look at the inventory system. You can also see my character stats and some of the other menus.

This big boy is rather elusive, but he's likely the toughest monster in the entire Beta. Goobbues (I pronounce them "goo-boos") are found further north, usually near the coastline. They have a powerful ranged aquatic attack.

A Goobbue is usually quite harmless, unless you're dumb enough to attack them...

...in which case you're not likely to get far.

I hope you can see why people are getting immersed in this game. If you can manage to run this game at max graphical settings (unlikely going to be possible on the PS3), I honestly think this game has the best looking environments in the whole FF series. Also, the music is incredible, but there's another thread which has links to the soundtracks.

I'm thinking of posting some videos of higher level combat and the various crafting skills. If there is anything you guys are interested in seeing in particular, just let me know and I can try to get a screenshot.

BIG FAT SMILEY FACES!!!! xD i love this cheers for the low down, it does look brilliant... did you only play as the lancier? or did u change to other jobs? whats the battle system like? sorry im just spamming questions but im so excited about this game lol

Technically, this game seems very pretty: surfaces looks extremely smooth, creatures have great detail (that crab looks badass). But from what I've seen (which is extremely limited), the colors just seem...boring. Everything looks washed-out and muted. It gives the game a more realistic look, but this incredibly boring style is not conducive to exciting gameplay.

I also disagree that the weather effects are gorgeous. I realize these are beta shots, but still, as I scroll down, I see overcast, overcast, cave, overcast, overcast, overcast, overcast, rain, rain, rain. It matches up rather well with the dreary color scheme of the rest of the world.

Before posting this, I decided to look up other screenshots, and I learned that there will, in fact, be sunny days in FFXIV. That is a plus. I've upgraded my opinion from Bleh to Cautious. I'd still appreciate more contrast in the visual style.

Figured I'd reply to my post, since I've been playing the game myself (not that I have a lot to report).

In case anyone's wondering about technical specs, I'm running a core i7 @ 2.8Ghz, a Radeon HD 4890, and 6 gigs of DDR3 1600, and I've got the game running pretty smooth with everything maxed at 1920x1080. I don't know how to get the game to report fps, so I don't have an exact number, but probably about 35/40fps when there's lots of stuff around. I can hear the video card getting a workout, though.

The game is very pretty, especially when it's sunny. I've yet to see anything but forest, due to my choice of starting areas.

Hey Rasputin I was wondering if you could post more screenshots but of the actual game!
Im really curious.
TY in advance.
