I just got through the part where Vossler betrays the party.

I seriously think that Square/Square-Enix should put more betrayals into their plots simply because it keeps everything going, in my opinion. Also, it gets emotions running high when an admired and often loved character (Cait Sith? xD) betrays the entire party by siding with the enemy.

I think they should do more, though. Instead of just a character betraying the party, escaping, fighting then dying in the next battle (as is the case in Tactics to a point), it should be 'til the end of the story.

Opinions?

Well, Garland betrayed Kuja and, in a way, Rikku even betrayed the rest of the Guardians, too. You might even say the same for Cloud and the rest of his party, when he unveiled the truth about Zack. Parallel to that, Edea ended up on the other extreme.

I Feel that they should include a traitor in the plots more often, it completly changes everything you thought you knew about that character and adds a whole new dimension to them.

I would like to see a character that betrays you who you lose for a good while and then get back, just to keep it original and fresh ^_^

That's all true, what with the mental aspects of it, they certainly classify as betrayals.

But what I was getting at was the classic betrayal, where one trusted member of the party defects, clashes with his former friends, and then dies. That would make for great virtual drama, imo. xD

I find that those betrayals you mentioned would not even come close to the emotional scale that a betrayal like Vossler's would.

Just my opinion on it though, and I'm hoping to see an expansion into it in future games. xD

Like Riku said, there were betrayals before this one. However...none of them were completely unexpected as this one was. I was befuddled that Vossler had betrayed everyone. Up until that point in the game, I really really adored him as a character. I can easily say that Vossler is actually one of my favorite characters from FFXII...Seeing him take that particular choice of action was kind of sad. =[

There are a number of other games, which actually go like that. The one that springs to mind right now is The Legend of Dragoon, for Playstation, and I'm on about Rose (although that's borderline). Another might be Starcraft: Brood War, for the PC, where Samir Duran ends up playing Sarah Kerrigan and basically leaves her for dead against three other races xD

Oh aye, Final Fantasy... xD

True. Actually, Cait Sith caught me off guard as well, though you could say that there were signs, but I still haven't caught on. o.0

But yeah, which is better, an expected betrayal or an unexpected betrayal?

New question ftw. :monster:

I didn't like the expected betrayals. Seifer is the only one that really comes to mind. His betrayal was dull and totally to be expected.

I really liked Cait Sith's betrayal too. I mean it was a turning point for his character and it made me like him all the more. ^.^

Aw crap. I forgot what exactly what I posted in here, but I'll try and give it a shot.

Betrayals are good when they are timed right and shock you aswell as slightly upset you that a character you liked through the game had turned on you. I didn't like Vossler's betrayal because he had the potential to be a great character but instead he betrays AND gets killed too early in the game. I thought it would have been better if it had went.

a.) Waits closer to the end before betraying you.

or

b.) Betray you the same way he did in FFXII, but let their be a long going fued and finally kill him near the end.

I wished Vossler's betrayal would have had a bigger affect in the story because he is one of the characters that people tend to forget a lot - And a great one at that.

A good example of a betrayal that got me shocked was in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Your partner-in-crime Lance Vance betrays you right at the end. Despite knowing the fact that he did this (My brother told me) I still didn't believe him and I was still shocked.

I kind of like it when the character who betrays you is a believable ally (Like Lance was) because it makes it the more surprising. Vossler was a bit belivable but if you watch some seens just prior to his betrayal, you will probably notice him acting slightly odd (I thought that was rather good since it was something I never noticed at first, but next time I did).

I didn't think Seifer's betrayal was as good because it seemed fairly obvious to me as he was always acting like an asshole.

I would like to see a traitor in the games a bit more, providing it is coming from an unlikely character that you wouldn't have suspected first, but notice things the next time you play.

I think this post was actually longer than the last one but, meh. :monster:

I agree with you there. I really liked Vossler as a character and I was kind of sad that he died so early. Also, he was a fairly important person in the Dalmascan resistance so I would have liked for his death to have a bigger overall effect storywise. Although, I can say that I sympathized with his character and I could kind of understand how he came to make those decisions.

I was shocked at Lance's betrayal as well. I never really liked his character that much though. He was kind of annoying. But I never expected him to betray you like that. And yes, I did notice that Vossler was acting a bit odd in the scenes before the betrayal. It kind of made me wonder what happened when he left with Larsa to get the escape ship during Ashe's rescue.

I thought Seifer's betrayal was fairly obvious but it doesn't seem to me that it was meant to be surprising. I wasn't surprised by Algus' betrayal either. Cait Sith seemed shady from the get-go as well.

As a whole, I think betrayals are good plot twists if they are well done plot-wise and it's better when they are unexpected.

Killing Lance was one of my favorite video game moments, it felt great!

What I would love to see would be the lead FF character betraying the rest of the party, nobody would see that coming. And then you either lose them as a playable character or continue playing as the lead.

Vossler's betrayal was great and totally unexpected. Cant say I enjoyed Cait Sith or any of the others as much. A couple of good ones are in FFT mainly Algus and Delita (sorta).

I haven't played FFXII, but I liked Cait Sith's betrayal in VII, though it made me hate him at first, but when he redeemed himself it added a lot of depth to his character. There were signs, but it was still unexpected. As for Seifer's betrayal, I'm not that far into the game, but I already know. I'll judge it when I actually get to that part and see how it affects me.

Betrayls are fine as long as it has something to do with the plot. A character betraying just for the sake of betraying is just stupid, just like a character dying for the sake of dying also is.

Kain betrayed the party many times in FFIV. But he was under mind control at the time.

Kefka technically betrayed Emperor Gestal at the end of the WOB.

I actually kind of expected Vossler to betray the party. I figured he was either going to betray them or end up getting killed.

I actually think this is a good idea, believe it or not.
It would take away, more than likely, the most powerful member of your party; it would lose you your most powerful weapons; and turn the plot in an unexpected way.

Everything goes to hell after that . xD

Sure I’d like to see more of it in future releases, but I’d probably enjoy it a whole lot more if they didn’t make it so obvious or… ridiculous, like Cait Sith. I mean, thus far in my opinion, it’s always been pretty obvious as to who gonna end up betraying the party like Vossler and Cait Sith.

Vossler out of all the betrayars was under the worst kind of pressure - losing the king, countless soldiers, etc, etc - poor sod only wanted what was best for Dalmasca.
