There's word out that 2012 may be the year of the Apocalypse.
Or so it's told in Mayan calendars.

With humanity coming up fast on 2012, publishers are helping readers gear up and count down to this mysterious — some even call it apocalyptic — date that ancient Mayan societies were anticipating thousands of years ago. Since November, at least three new books on 2012 have arrived in mainstream bookstores. A fourth is due this fall. Each arrives in the wake of the 2006 success of 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl, which has been selling thousands of copies a month since its release in May and counts more than 40,000 in print. The books also build on popular interest in the Maya, fueled in part by Mel Gibson's December 2006 film about Mayan civilization, Apocalpyto. Authors disagree about what humankind should expect on Dec. 21, 2012, when the Maya's "Long Count" calendar marks the end of a 5,126-year era. Journalist Lawrence Joseph forecasts widespread catastrophe in Apocalypse 2012: A Scientific Investigation Into Civilization's End. Spiritual healer Andrew Smith predicts a restoration of a "true balance between Divine Feminine and Masculine" in The Revolution of 2012: Vol. 1, The Preparation.

In 2012, Daniel Pinchbeck anticipates a "change in the nature of consciousness," assisted by indigenous insights and psychedelic drug use.The buildup to 2012 echoes excitement and fear expressed on the eve of the new millennium, popularly known as Y2K, though on a smaller scale, says Lynn Garrett, senior religion editor at Publishers Weekly. She says publishers seem to be courting readers who believe humanity is creating its own ecological disasters and desperately needs ancient indigenous wis
dom.

well i hope the world doesnt end. maybe the world will turn into terra and we'll all grow tails and become soulless vessels called genomes

Yeah, that that'll happen (the genomes).

Well, this kinda scares me, but I highly doubt will happen. I mean, what happened at Y2K? Thats right; nothing. Hopefully this will be the same.

The thing is, apparently the Mayan Calendar has yet to have something wrong on it.
So there's still the possibility.
Though I'm hoping it really doesn't, we still have so much to live for, like Iraq, oil shortages,.....erm, erm...........

Seriously though, it's still an interesting although dark prospect to live like this.

I'm not really sure what to think about that, but I certainly wouldn't hope for that to happen. At least, not until I do what I always wanted to do.

War, if you would like to hear my honest to god opinion, here it is:

This is all simply B.S. This isn't the first time that the end of the world, or some sort of apocalyptic event has been predicted, and this certainly won't be the last. Things like this happen all the time. As a matter of fact, the whole, "Y2K" scare was far more believable and credited than this, and we all know how that turned out.

Again, this is all nonsense. In the end, on the off chance that I'm wrong, and the world does end, then there's nothing we can do to prevent it. So you might as well carry on with your lives as you are now, and ignore these false prophecies.

I have more to say, but I'll bite my tongue until someone criticizes my thoughts.

Actually, that's my....well, mostly my opinion of it as well.
But it sure is interesting though, I mean it adds that sense of excitement to our lives, in some way that I can't even describe.

What if it's true?
Is it really just a load of crap?
All these questions just adds to the suspense of this.

I agree with you to a certain extent, my friend. You see, I've been following so many different theories and I've waited so patiently, but every time I'm hopeful that the world as we know it will end, it doesn't. The naysayers are proven wrong, and the world trudges on in the same pointless path as it did before.

Trust me, I'd like nothing more than for this to be true, and the world to end, however, somethings just can't be helped. We have to draw the line between a fantasy and reality somewhere, and I can acknowledge that this is simply a fantasy, no matter how bad I want it to be a reality.

theres a part withing me that hopes this is true... to a certain extent... like the world almost ends... haha... so the world would be ok in the end but it ALMOST ends.. that would be exciting and would give me a story to tell my grandkids..

Do you know how many times I've seen threads like this?

In fact no, world is not going to end at least not until God (yes I am Christian) says so. If you believe in the bible, you should know that no one in the heavens knows the exact date of the Judgment Day except for God.

The Mayan believed in many things and their predictions were based on their beliefs, therefore they couldn't actually predict the future.

No one can predict the future, there are no guarantees. You know why? Because the whole idea of destiny would kill the whole idea of "free will" that the bible says we have.

Yes, prophesies were made in order to foretell future events but still they weren't, like one might say, completely exact.

For example, it was said that one of Jesus' apostles would betray Jesus, but the prophecy never mentioned any name. It could have been anyone, but since Judas was the most likely to be tempted by Satan, he chose to betray Jesus taking the role of the "traitor" (now I'll end or else this will become a Religious debate and I hate those...)

Of course, I don't take what the bible says so literarily since it was rewritten countless and countless of times by many who wished to change what the Bible said for their own benefit.

In theory, the world how we know it could end in a couple of seconds, minutes, hours, months, years or even milleniums, the exact time/date in which the world ends is not accurate due to many factors and other variables.

For example: we are in the middle of a war, which I hope it will end soon, the prophesies in the bible says that the kingdoms of the world (in our case, countries and other political organizations) will turn against each other.

Since when we are witnessing that? Since the beginning of the age of man. Many thought that the armageddon was coming with World War I. So far we had two of those wars, WWI and WWII, and still I we are here. Yes many tragedies occured and many lives were lost but still humanity walks the Earth.

Does this means that humanity will live forever? No

Actually nothing lasts forever, everything is bound to mortality and the unavoidable fate of extermination, dinosaours experienced that and we know what remains of them. The sun, which is a star like any other normal star, has a set amount of life which will expire after millions, and millions of years. Once the sun "dies", the main source of energy which sustains all existance in the world will disappear. Harsh winters and an everlasting night will rule the world and all life will eventually disappear, safe for the microscopic organisms that will remain after all other life fades away. These too will eventually disappear and Earth will be left as a wasteland, another dead planet waiting to either: A) Be destroyed by any natural means, B) Stay there doing nothing or, C) become another worthless pile of rocks, minerals and other similar components.

Ok, now I am not an expert and I accept that I must have made a mistake somewhere around my post so I hope that someone is eventually bound to correct my post and extend the life of this thread further on.

My simple answer: Like many questions about life itself, this one as well doesn't have an exact answer.
