Are we all in agreement that Sephiroth is one of the coolest characters in the entire Final Fantasy series? Yes? Good. Now, here comes my question: Why does everyone love him so much? Here are my opinions:

-He was the villain in the first future-ific FF Game, naturally you will like him

-We've seen him progress throughout other games, the one in mind for me is Kingdom Hearts, and KH2. There was also a game, "Erghiez" (sp<-?) that he appeared in, among many others, I believe. We have grown to appreciate him since square refuses to get rid of him

But why wont they get rid of him?

-He had his own song, which btw, I have every single version of

Do we agree it is a fantasmic piece of music?

-He just looked so cool (Silver hair, black cape, amazing sword, unique attire)

-His story is amazing, we engross ourselves trumendously. (A god-like army general who discovers he was created in a lab (not 100% true, as we find out) and seeks revenge upon the people who are different from him, he seeks to become God himself).

So, what are your views?

I liked him because he actually had a good plan. His plan always changed and developed until he stuck with trying to become a 'God'
I also liked the fact that he actually knew what he was doing he didn't seem totally insane (well he did but at least I know what I mean)

As much as I think Sephiroth is a good character, both for analysis and playing his part in the story, he tends to get overrated. It does lead people to think less of him because of that, even if it's a bad reason to hate him.

It's because some fans place more emphasis on aspects of him that aren't nearly as important, or ruin his character by writing out of character fanfics. But granted that Sephiroth is popular, it will probably happen anyways, as it does with any popular character. There will always be a hate crowd among popular characters. I wish I could say that he was more popular because of his back story or his own character, but people sometimes mistaken him for someone else, and often gets praised for his physical appearance and "coolness" factor rather than what's really so important about him as a character. But, I guess that's what fanservice does... I can't help but think that the developers wanted to make him popular in some way because of his character, and so gave them a bit of fanservice to pull them in, only not everyone sees Sephiroth for what he really is.

Take for example, the essay written about the Jenova Thesis and certain threads pitting other villains against Sephiroth. I don't mean to be biased, but arguing from lack of or false analysis of Sephiroth really tells you how fanservice and overrating characters can alter the perspective of other people.

I've occasionally wondered about why people love him so much, but I do believe it boils down to simple mindedness. Essentially, he's got a nifty theme tune, quite the challenging boss (throwing aside KOTR and maxed stats) and has a sword which is "totally hardcore."

Really, I don't think there's much to like in Sephiroth at all. Yes, they display his power quite well in the game, but really, what's there to him? Long whire hair, black cloak and a bloody good sword doesn't make anyone amazing.

Frankly, the people of today saw Sephiroth first. And for the sake of nostalgia, love him more.

So I've noticed in some cases as to why he's loved, at any rate.

Actually there is more then one piece of music connected with Sephiroth and OWA is not his theme song.

There are.
Chasing the Black caped man, this is heared several times through the game.
Those chosen by the planet. This is Sephiroth's true theme song and is one of my personal favorites.
Birth of a God, played during the Bizzaro battle.
OWA, this I think we all know.

AOWA is considered Sephiroth's theme song in AC as those chosen by the planet does not have a place in the movie which I think is a pity.

There are many reasons for Sephiroth's popularity but it can be baisically split into two ideas.
1, the fanboys/girls who love him for his looks and bad-ass attitude and all that rot.
2,those who appreciate the complexity of Sephiroth's character and appreciate discussions about him.

These two reasons though very genral are wy Sephiroth is so popular and hard to get rid of.

That's right, I completely forgot about Those Chosen by the Planet. That too, was a good song, fitting for his character. I consider him a cool charcter for several reasons. First, the Masamune is easily the most stunning blade in all of Final Fantasy. The scale replicas of it are 68" long. Amazing. His long white hair, his stunning eyes, his overall force of personality are by far, the most intense characteristics I've ever seen in a fictional character.

Verae, I couldn't agree more with these 2 reasons, and I fall within the #2 category, his persona, his ideaology, coupled with his strength and supernatural abilities makes him have a powerful presence. He is one of the most complete FF villains ever created, and that is what makes me like the most out of any FF villain to date.

There are Fanboy's/girls for every villain, some people worship Kefka just because of he has a "synical laughter", some people like Sephiroth because he looks cool and has a huge long sword, some people like Kuja because he has a feminine look...we can't despise these people to liking what they like, it's just what they feel, and their opinion, there are also people who have a deeper reason as to why they find a character interesting.

It's just how it is.
