The one thing I HATE about Final Fantasy games!

I absolutely love the Final Fantasy games, and often go back to them, but there is one thing I absolutely HATE about them - and that is the all too often drawn-out, tortorous cut scenes!!! Especially the lovey dovey crap that seems to be obligatory in most FF games! I know you could skip them in FF12, and I just hope that's the case from now on!! (I don't mind watching them first time of course, but when playing through again it gets so annoying!)

Anyone else find themselves shouting 'COME OOOOOOOOON' at the TV whenever Tidus and Yuna have one of their 'moments'? I don't care about your tortured existences! I just wanna kill stuff!!! :mandi:

You can't really be much of an RPG gamer if you want to skip all the scenes. Half the enjoyment comes from the story and progression of the game. Not sure how you really enjoy the game if 'all you wanna do is kill stuff"

Nope i embrace the scenes! :D

No i don't want to skip them i love watching the scene's as much as i love fighting and levelling up suppose it all depends on how much you play it though and what kind of scene it is i also usually pick things up from scene's that i didn't see or hear the first time round

I'm sort of torn. On one had I agree with stinger that most of the enjoyment comes from story and progression, On the other hand I dislike that half the jrpgs I play any more are essentially glorified movies with terrible plots.

Of course how good the story being told plays a major role in whether you want to follow it closely or not. But in the case of most of the FF games the stories are quite solid and I can't imagine having any enjoyment of the game if it was just fighting.

I love the cut-scenes! As they what build the plot, and the plot is what makes me enjoy.
And enjoying from a game is the most important. (I think).

I never replay games (hate doing such things), but I can guess that it'll be annoying to rewatch the whole cut-scenes again as you replay the game. It happened to me once in FFX when I lost to a boss and had to rewatch the whole LONG cut-scene again...
Glad I didn't have to rewatch it thrice!

There a much worse cut scene's in other games like lost odyssey loved the game but there was just to many cut scenes

Not true at all! I love RPGs, they're my absolute favourite genre (on both PS and PC, games like KOTOR, Baldur's Gate etc.).

But that's why I wrote this:

>>>I don't mind watching them first time of course, but when playing through again it gets so annoying!<<<

If I'm playing a game through first time I'll hapilly watch all the scenes as it's integral to the story as you've said, but when I play through it again I'm usually doing it for 100% completion more than anything else, so want to get my guys levelled up nice and quick! So these non-skippable cut-scenes do my head in! I usually walk off and make something to eat during the longer ones!!

(I realise though that my initial post didn't make the point that I'm just trying to complete the game 100% so I already know the story!)

The cutscenes are to die for. Why skip them? If you don't like them, then RPGs aren't for you.

I can see where you are coming from to an extent, I view that whole 'Kalm flashback ' in FFVII as one long and torturous cut scene and it makes me die a little inside everytime I replay and get to the at point

Unles syou're talking about the FMV's in which case, I don't agree, I love watching them

And guys, PLEASE dont say he is not a proper RPG fan, its rude, just because he has a differening opinion, you can still play for the story without having to like the FMV's and stuff

BS is all i have to say to that :wacky:.
I love RPG's but i do hate the cut scenes, sometimes ill watch them depending on what triggers it, say i lay a bomb somewhere, such as in ffVII its like "woo, BOOM!" but them watching scenes like tidus/yuna bore the fuck outta me.

But in any case FF is nothing compaired to Star ocean2, was playing it with a friend the toher day who wont EVER skip a cut scene and we turned it on at 10:00pm played a fight and killed themand got ambushed... 5 times ... but it only took 15 minuites, then the cut scene lasted untill just past 12am =/.. i mean 2 hours for 1 cut scene, there must be a feture lenght film, plus a few sequals in this game somewhere

Yeah it's cut scenese like that, or some of the longer ones in FFVIII that I wish I could skip! I've played FFVIII so many times I know the story inside out, I don't need to see it again when I just want to make my guys really powerful :D

I do love the FMVs though, no matter when they are, because the graphics are always amazing :D

Thanks for that :) I have to admit I was a bit confused when people were saying I can't be a proper RPG fan because I don't watch the cut-scenes if I've seen them before!

I'm not bothered about the cutscenes, they're part of the game so I just go along with them regardless of whether I want to or not, but if I really can't be arsed watching the longer ones I'll flick it onto a different channel whilst I'm waiting. :monster:

This thread has sooo gotten its topic switched. We're supposed to be discussing what you hate about Final Fantasy games. The thing I hate with a fiery passion is how whenever you die you go back to the last save point. That could be 2hrs of grinding taken away from you just because you opened a chest and got ambushed by a powerful enemy. It pisses me off soooo much!!! GRR!!! They should just have it to where when you die you go back to the inn and lose alot of money.

No it's not, read the first post

no larry, if you read it propally, and didnt just skim the posts you would see its about hating/liking cutscenes ... postforthesakeofpostcount much ?

That's what us mods are for, if you're going to comment, at least try to contribute to the discussion, other than that, leave it to us pl0x.

I'm just the opposite. I'm far more interested in a games plot than anything else. I'd be perfectly fine with a game with very little gameplay and a great deal of cutscenes.

Edit: I know you said you watch them the first time, but I still only replay games for their plot generally.

ironic_lettuce was actually said that he/she watched the cutscenes during his first play through!
I generally enjoy re-watching the cutscenes though. I usually don't play an FF game for while so I like to watch them for the nostalgia :D The laughing scene in Luca between Tidus and Yuna is still REALLY annoying though lol

Hint to people in this thread saying if you don't like cutscenes then you don't like RPG's - get a grip - he said he didn't mind first time round, and from what I gather, games main qualities are gameplay, not FMVs etc...if the main thing you like about games is cutscenes, then games in general aren't for you tbh.

I have to agree with cutscenes in most cases unless a game's cast is EXTREMELY well-defined. For example, I would disagree with Lost odyssey having too many CGI cutscenes because the characters were well defined, and that with one of the best Nobuo Uematsu sondtracks, made the game more rivetting and emotional than any of the Final Fantasies. I feel deeply for anybody playing through FF X in particular. None of the characters besides Auron were really interesting in the least, and the bad characterizations and dubbing made you just want them all to die. Last year, I tried playing FF X again, and the only way I was able to keep my sanity was to make a running commentary by myself throughout it, Mystery Science Theatre 3000 style.

There are other JRPGs with abominable cutscenes that alot of people consider classics. Like, Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, and ESPECIALLY Eternal Sonata on the 360/PS3... Beautiful vistas, classical music by Chopin, and a dull narrator do NOT interesting opening cutscenes make. And one character's voice basically killed the game for me...

Additional: By the way... There ARE RPGs that don't have loads of cutscenes, FF-land, you just have your heads too far up in Squeenix's ass to see. You know America and All those other Western/European Countries? They make games too. Some of these are RPGs, a lot of these can be more fun when approached the right way and a few don't have any cutscenes to speak of outside of intros/outtros! SHOCKER! :O

Generally, my issue with cut scenes lies with bad dubbing and writing. Most of the time, I set voices to Japanese and watch subtitles in games that offer that option(Its saved me the torture of english dubbing in modern Castlevania and Sonic games)

Honestly, I thought Dragon Quest VIII's cutscenes were better than FF X's. The voice acting was fairly decent, the characters were likable, and the cutscenes themselves were more enjoyable to sit through. The bar fight scene, the flashback with Yangus trying to rob the hero, and the various other cutscenes in the game were for me, better than anything that FF X had to offer.

Honestly, cutscenes are getting way too over the top now. There's a problem when you have cutscenes in a game that are longer than 5-10 mins. The only expection to that rule should be the ending and even then, it should be 20 mins tops.

More games should look at the example of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and learn that a story can be told without slamming the gamer with countless cutscenes.
