[0.1] Welcome
------------------------------
Hey! Welcome to the world of Role-Playing. I'm sure you heard of the term 'Role Playing', or 'RP' somewhere on the forums, or another forum, right? Well, I'm here to explain to you what 'Role-Playing' is. Enjoy your stay, and of course, feel free to ask any questions in this thread, or via Private Message that you feel weren't already answered in my guide. Well... without further ado, here it is!
[0.2] Introduction to Role-Playing
------------------------------
In short, uncomplicated explanation, role-playing ( text roleplaying in particular ) is like writing a story or book with the help of several other people. Each person creates or chooses a character to play the role of, and writes the story, as if acting it out, in his/her point of view. Each person chooses how their character acts, thinks, how they feel, and so on. They all play out the story, or role, of their character.
[0.3] The Basics of Roleplaying
------------------------------
We'll start, with the storyline. The storyline the most important part of a roleplay. There are many different storylines, original and unoriginal. For instance, an unoriginal storyline would be one that was based off of pre-fabricated storylines ( like basing it off of the storyline of Kingdom Hearts, a Final Fantasy game, Star Ocean, Star Wars, Lord of The Rings, and so on ). These are the most common roleplays nowadays, seeing as most people get involved with roleplaying through games or movies.
Then, there are those storylines that are created without any base pre-created storylines. These storylines are 'original'.
Here are a few examples of what kind of storylines would be unoriginal, and original.
- A young boy sets out on a journey to find his father, who was kidnapped by an evil madman known as Dr. Tyrannus.
This would be considered an original storyline. ( Unless of course, it has already been created by another person. )
- Sora and company go in search of kingdom hearts all over again, with the help of some new keybladers.
This is unoriginal, since it is based off of the pre-made storyline of kingdom hearts.
Original storylines may seem contradicting in a way, seeing as they have to be created to be played out. But, in a short summary, original roleplays are those created on the spot out of pure imagination and not influenced or based off of other storylines. ( Not necessarily NOT influenced, but definately not based off of another ).
Storylines are based on four main archetypes after everything is said and done, regardless if they are original or not.
The four are,
1. ) Romance - Normally these are pretty... well.. cheesy. xD They do come around every once and a while though. For those who don't know what romance is, refer to www.dictionary.com.
2. ) Adventure - One to several characters go on a journey, normally to find something, such as an artifact of some sort. For example, taking a trip around the planet in search of a treasure would fall under this catagory.
3. ) Good versus Evil - The classic duke-it-out good versus evil. A superman roleplay would fall under this catagory, normally. A lot of original roleplays are based off of this one as well.
4. ) Comedy - Yep! A comedy roleplay. Laughs and giggles all around. Chances are you won't see too many, but they are around.
Most of the time a roleplay will be a mixture of these, wether is be Good vs. Evil and Adventure, Romance and Comedy, or Comedy and Good versus Evil.
There are other types of roleplays, but they ultimately fall under one of these catagories.
[0.4] Literacy & Grammar
------------------------------
Yes, I said literacy and grammar. A lot of people are oblivious to what these things are, so I'm going to try my best to explain them to you.
I hope that, if you've taken your own language in school, you would know how to write a decent paragraph or two. Now, in order to go a little more in-depth, I'll provide some examples of what is good, and what isn't.
"Da dog run ovr 2 tat ting der!!!11" < I'm sure most of you can figure out what is wrong there. If you can't, I will tell you; everything.
It should be more like,
"The dog ran over to the porch!" < You see? Much better, isn't it? Let's experiment with something a bit more complex.
"N ordr 2 vote sucksessfooly i wnt 2 da lady 2 git a pensil so i cud mark my vote on da box."
Now.. again.. everything is wrong with this sentence. In fact, it could even be two sentences.
Rewritten correctly, it would look something like this;
"In order to vote successfully, I borrowed a pencil from one of the ladies. Then, I marked the box for who I wanted to vote for."
Hopefully you get the point. We'll move on to a big problem in the roleplaying society... run-on sentences... I shiver at the thought.
A run-on sentence is a sentence continuing. It is superfluous most of the time, and is equivelant to about five sentences... just without periods. A big reason for this is, people think that a comma ( YES. A COMMA. ONE OF THESE -- , -- ) can replace a period. Well.. I'm here to tell you that it can't. Here are some examples of run-on sentences.
"I went over to the kitchen to eat some food, then I had my food, then I went to the bathroom, I went outside afterwards, and I also went to the supermarket, sooner or later I would be going to a really cool store, and then I can get my cool toy." Sorry for the sucky example, but I couldn't think of anything retarded, as I myself, am not retarded.
Corrected, it would look a little something like this,
"I went over to the kitchen to eat some food. Then, I ate my food, heading outside right aftwards. I also went to the supermarket. Eventually, I would be going to a really cool store, where I would get a cool toy."
You see? Not great, but incredibly better than the original. Now, I'll run through some more "do's and dont's".
There/Their/They're
You should know these.
There - Over THERE. A place.
Their - Their ball. Someone's.
They're - Simply, THEY ARE with a nice little line between them.
Another common mistake, is,
To/Too/Two
To - I'm going TO the store. Used when moving TO, or sending TO,
normally.
Too - I'm going to the store TOO. As well. Also.
Two - One, TWO, Three. < A number.
Yet another common mistake - When to use an apostrophe.
I'll tell you when. It is only used in two situations -
1. ) When you abbreviate. ( Example being, it is - It's/ I will - I'll. )
2. ) When saying something is in posession. ( Example being, Her ball - The ball is her's. / Jacob's towel. )
The apostrophe is NOT used when plural. If there are several 'Jacobs' in the room, you would not say 'There are several Jacob's in the room.', you would say, 'There are several Jacobs in the room'.
I'm sure most of you know these already, but just in case, I put them up.
Now, let's move on to how to improve.
Go to school, and pay attention in class. If you're in eighth grade english, you should know everything I have said about literacy and grammar so far. If you don't, well, there is something wrong with you. Most writing programs help a lot. Microsoft Word will correct your spelling and most of the time, your grammar. Over time ( especially by participating in roleplays ) you will develop a knowledge and understanding on how to write correctly. It is, as everything is, just a matter of time and practice.
[0.5] Creating a Role Play
------------------------------
Now that literacy has been embedded into your mind, we can begin creating roleplays.
Creating a role play is pretty simple once you get the hang of it. As I explained before, there are original and unoriginal roleplays. Whichever you choose, you are going to need a storyline, or plot, rules, and a few other things. So, get ready for the thrill ride on how to make a roleplay!
[0.5a] Creating a Story
------------------------------
Storylines are the most important part of a roleplay, as I stated before. In fact, a storyline IS the roleplay. You can't have a roleplay if you don't have a storyline? So, seeing as this is so necessary, I will begin to explain how to create one!
First, what you really want to think about, is what your story is based on. Simply, is it original or unoriginal? If it is original, you will have to come up with your own story, really. If it is unoriginal, you can skip a few steps.
For original roleplays, you want to think about what your story is going to be. For example, do you want a band of companions to set out on an adventure to fight an evil dragon? Or do you want to go around a city shooting people? It's up to you really, and no one can actually tell you how to imagine. That being said... USE YOUR IMAGINATION. That's what roleplaying is. The use of creativity. ( This is why, I rarely participate in unoriginal roleplays. I prefer creativity in originality over slight imagination put into something pre-created. Enough about me though.. let's get back to you! ).
Most storylines take place in past/present/future, or oftenly referred to as, Midievil/Realisitc/Sci-Fi.
Midievil ( Past )- A roleplay taking place in the past, normally of a historic event.
Realistic (Ppresent )- A roleplay taking place in the present. These roleplays are normally that of war, romance, or comedy in present times.
Sci-Fi ( Future )- A roleplay taking place in the future, normally. This kind of roleplay could feature an alien, or something entirely different, just not exactly 'realistic'.
Basically.. create a story. You don't have to choose these things beforehand, but sometimes it helps.
[0.5b] Rules
------------------------------
Every roleplay has to have rules. They are the basic guidelines and limitations of your roleplay, and basically tell people what, and how you want. Here are a few rules you might want to consider.
Profanity - How much do you want people to swear in your roleplay? Do you want only a few words usable, all of them, or not at all?
Godmoding - Godmoding is being ultimately powerful and virtually unbeatable. This happens a lot in roleplays, and if you don't want it, state so.
Powerplaying - This is the most annoying thing anyone can do in roleplay, besides be illiterate. Powerplay is when you operate someone elses character without permission ( actually, even with permission it is powerplay, ). Do you want it in your roleplay? I personally hate it, and believe it is unfair to take control of someone else's role. Unless of course, they have permission to.
There are many other rules to use, but you get the point. Just use your imagination and creativity to make some more. When it comes to your roleplay, it's up to you. ;D
[0.5c] Creating a Character
------------------------------
Creating a character is the second most important part of making a roleplay. With no characters, the story wouldn't go anywhere. So, this is how to make one!
Every great roleplayer follows a basic outline of detail of their character, called a Template. A template, basically, is a list of headlines filled out according to your character's attributes. Here is a basic template,
Name : ( The name of your character )
Age : ( How old your character is )
Gender : ( Is your character a girl, a boy, or something else? )
Appearance : ( What does your character look like? Is he/she tall, slender, short, fat? In most roleplays you are allowed to post a picture in this catagory, but if without one, or not allowed to, provide a brief description of your character's appearance. )
History/Biography : ( The biography is very important. It provides an insight on your character's past - what happened to them?/how did they end up where they are now?/where have they been? <-- these questions should all be answered here. I personally provide a detailed description of my character's past. This is usually what you want to do. )
Here are a few examples of well written templates -
www.finalfantasyforums.net/hall-of-warriors/azrael-8288.html by Stryfe.
and ( not to gloat or anything.. I just have a lack of enthusiasm for finding another good template. )
http://www.finalfantasyforums.net/hall-of-warriors/crane-8846.html
Reading these will probably give you the best example on how to do a template and create a character. But of course, if that fails, you could always model them after your own life. Not exactly, but you could use some interesting past events from your life and put them into your character!
A sidenote: There are many characters, original, unoriginal, and the like. I prefer to make completely original characters, by making them start their journey when I create them. By using them in roleplays and battles, I build on their biography, and overall, live the life of the character. This gives your character COMPLETE originality, and if that's what you're aiming for, you should do exactly that.
[0.6] Role Play Battles
------------------------------
Role Play Battles occur when two or more people decide to battle with their characters, either in and during a roleplay, or outside of one by creating a seperate ( and usually shorter ) storyline. They may be questing for the evil dragon and find each other intimidating to the point where they must battle, or they have simply called each other out to battle for the hell of it. Whichever it may be, battling is the same.
Now, the basics.
There are two types of battles - Power Character, and Melee.
Power Character - This type of battle is that between two or more people with special abilities, such as being able to control elements or use magic. Basically, a final fantasy or kingdom hearts character would be, power characters.
Melee - Good old hand to hand, sword to sword combat. This type of battle is between two or more realisitc people battling with their fists, sowrds, guns, or any other realistic weapon. No magical, out-of-the-ordinary abilities involved.
The two main rules, which apply to both ( not always Godmoding to melee ), are Godmoding and Powerplaying.
Godmoding - Godmoding is being invincible or unbeatable unfairly ( or at all, actually ). Remember not to godmode. This is an often occurance in battles, and isn't fair to the other participant.
Powerplaying - NEVER DO THIS. Powerplaying is opperating someone else's character. This is a big no-no. You should never, under any circumstances ( unless given permission to by the owner of the character ) powerplay.
Keep these rules in mind. They are the two main rules that will govern a battle.
Now, the anatomy of a battle.
A battle is a simple, but yet complex thing. It takes place between two or more people ( as stated before ) and has the same basic concept of roleplay; playing the role of your character. However, there is one more rule that operates how the battle will process. The rule is, a turn-turn based function, that allows each participant to act, and react. To every action, there must be a reaction, correct? Correct. So, I will go through a simple example, hopefully clearly stating how this turn-by-turn effect works.
Jacob swung his fist at Paul.
Paul sidestepped, dodging the fist.
Jacob swung again.
Paul sidestepped again. In attempt to retaliate, he swung his own fist.
Jacob was hit.
Now, if you will take the time to notice, each person gives the other person time to react. The rule of powerplay should be exampled here;
Jacob swung and hit Paul in the face.
Paul was forced to fall, having no way to escape.
See the difference? Powerplay eliminates the chance at your opponent retaliating. So, keep it fair, go turn-by-turn, and give your opponent his/her time to react. Meaning, don't not give them a chance. Always let them decide what hits and what doesn't.
Now, this might seem unfair as well. To tell the truth, there's no way around it. You just have to trust the other person to actually let a hit land. However, there are ways to make your attack effective without being unfair. Example,
Jacob swung from the left at Paul's face.
Paul sidestepped to the right.
Jacob immediately swung again, this time from the right.
Paul was hit, unable to dodge again.
Things like that. Now, this might be a skeptical example, but hopefully, you get the picture. Note, there are other, more complex ways to make sure your attack hits. Again, this might also seem slightly unfair at times, but I assure you, there are ways out of EVERY attack. You just have to use your brain ( Yes, your brain ) to imagine a way. As stated before; isn't that what roleplaying really is? Imagination? The answer of course, is yes.
Now, I'll teach you how to start a battle. By making a thread in the correct area ( on FFF, the colliseum forum ) you can call out another character and challenge them to battle. Just remember to keep the two main rules in mind! Now, go create a battle or two! Have fun. ;]
[1.0] The Omniverse ( An Introduction )
------------------------------
Yes. I know what you are thinking. One of two things - Oh! I know what this is! or What the hell is an Omniverse? Well, I'll provide a quote from a friend of mine - Lord of Chaos. ( Even though, the Omniverse cannot, and will not be explained fully, ever, he provides a good description, and possibly best description that will ever be mustered ).
The Omniverse. So many ways one could explain it... so many ways that people have already tried. I have found myself to often describe it like this, in my past and current experiences:
The Omniverse isn't a Universe. It isn't a Multiverse. If you were to somehow put all planes, dimensions, realities, worlds, solar systems, galaxies, universes, and multiverses into an Acorn Shell, you would get the Omniverse. It is as simple as it is named: Omni -- All; Verse -- Collection. This seems weird, but it is a set truth. All Role-Play, games, books, movies, and anything of a fictional nature takes place within this monstrous cluster of all things within a relative boundary of the imaginative and dulchred. It is always expanding to the infinite and vanishing to the negative.Thus, the Omniverse shall never, ever cease to exist.
That might sound a little fancy or worded oddly, but hey, it is a simple truth. One of few that exist in life (even if this isn't real life...ironic...ha). No one can really say they know the full Omniverse...because this would be impossible; mainly because of that second-to-last sentence. However, I will start you on the road to at least a basic knowledge of it and its workings.
I feel that Role-Players need to familiarize themselves with the Omniverse, to know that, not only is there more out there than they realize, but that everything has a way of tying together, and there is always a chance for something new.
... and that pretty much sums up the Omniverse.
[1.1] Planes
------------------------------
In the Omniverse, are seven precursor planes. These are the seven primary planes, and from each one of them, two dominant planes spawn. From these dominant planes, are multiple other planes ( but they aren't very important at the moment ). So, let's get started. I will discuss, in order of how they lay... in importance, and in stature (In other words, if you were to look at a diagram of the Omniverse and how the planes lie you would see them in this order...either from inner to outer or from top to bottom, depending how you want to look. My personal favorite is that they are all intertwined).
[1.1a] The Plane of Chaos
------------------------------
From this plane...all has come, and to it... all will return.
You've probably heard those words before in various stories and religions. Well, truth is, most things center around things forming from a chaotic epicenter of energy or darkness. Thus is true in the Omniverse. This plane is also called the Primary Plane, though while slightly more important than the others... it serves no higher purpose. Upon this plane, only one being exists -- Father Chaos...Lord Chaos... God Chaos...God of -- You get the picture. He, she, it, whatever you want to call it (though primarly thought of as masculine), lies at the center of this plane... usually in a deep slumber. Upon this plane lies chaos, in its raw form. You can't really say chaos energy... because energy is a by-product.
It is below this plane (once again, depending how you look at their layout) that the Nexus exists. The Nexus is simply the point were all things meet... the Chaos Plane not withstanding, seeing as how if anything were to truly connect with the plane without a proper connection, then everything would be eradicated...and the Omniverse would have to try and start... all... over... again. From this plane, chaos seeps into the other planes... as to why this chaos doesn't destroy things, remains to be investigated, but it more than likely has to do with the fact that it doesn't pass directly into a plane... but absorbs the plane itself, in an odd kind of way.
(Note: For those wondering or guessing, this is where Valyon draws one of his most powerful resources -- Chaos itself. )
Now, some of you might be saying, that "Chaos cannot be a Precursor... because there has to be order (or law, whatever) to balance it." NO, this is not true. Chaos in itself, is so...chaotic, that it creates an odd balance; it in itself is the order to the Omniverse. However, order is on another topic...which will be covered later.
[1.1b] The Astral Plane
------------------------------
This plane... is the one that most usually try to use in a fight or other things. This plane, is where your mental self exists, your soul, so to speak. The Ethereal Plane is a sub-level of this plane and is known as a Dominant Plane. Either way, the Astral Plane is basically where people like shamen draw their powers from. This plane is so closely molded to the material plane, that the two are sometimes undiscernable.
Think of it like this. When a dragon takes a human form, his body has to go somewhere... it shifts to the Astral Plane. Those who are able to see on both the Material plane and Astral can see the dragon in his true form... as if it were an aura of sorts around him. Astral abilities are among some of the most powerful techniques that can be mastered. However, mastery is difficult, considering there is a chance you could end up destroying yourself. This plane is the first beyond the physical, but is more denser than the next ones.
It is also this plane in which most can use to travel to other worlds, planes, and "time" periods. This plane is sort of like the step between all the rest of the planes, in a sense. However, it is a Precursor for the exact same reason -- it connects the other planes. There are several layers to this plane in itself, without the Dominant Planes that descend from it.
The Astral Plane is the plane of thought, memory, and psychic energy; it is where gods go when they die or are forgotten (or, most likely, both). It is a barren place with only rare bits of solid matter; some creatures, such as the tyrannous githyanki, use the petrified corpses of dead gods as floating fortresses. The Astral Plane is unique in that it is infinitesimal instead of infinite; there is no space or time here, though both catch up with you when you leave. The souls of the newly dead from the Prime Material Plane pass through here on their way to the afterlife or Outer Planes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For now, this is all I can give. I'll have some new sections up as soon as I am able, and revamped previous sections ( Such as the whole Omniverse bit. I'd like to explain it in my own way, without the use of LoC's material. )
Without LoC, the Omniverse section wouldn't have been possible. So.. thanks to him for making it possible to understand.
Also, I'd like to make a referrence to Stryfe's guide to role-playing. If you need a more in-depth role-play guide, read it. It's pretty damn good. - http://www.finalfantasyforums.net/role-playing-central/stryfes-guide-to-role-playing-9123.html
... and, well... enjoy. Later.
To - I'm going TO the store. Used when moving TO, or sending TO,
normally.
Too - I'm going to the store TOO. As well. Also.
Two - One, TWO, Three. < A number.
Yet another common mistake - When to use an apostrophe.
I'll tell you when. It is only used in two situations -
1. ) When you abbreviate. ( Example being, it is - It's/ I will - I'll. )
2. ) When saying something is in posession. ( Example being, Her ball - The ball is her's. / Jacob's towel. )
The apostrophe is NOT used when plural. If there are several 'Jacobs' in the room, you would not say 'There are several Jacob's in the room.', you would say, 'There are several Jacobs in the room'.
I'm sure most of you know these already, but just in case, I put them up.
Now, let's move on to how to improve.
Go to school, and pay attention in class. If you're in eighth grade english, you should know everything I have said about literacy and grammar so far. If you don't, well, there is something wrong with you. Most writing programs help a lot. Microsoft Word will correct your spelling and most of the time, your grammar. Over time ( especially by participating in roleplays ) you will develop a knowledge and understanding on how to write correctly. It is, as everything is, just a matter of time and practice.
[0.5] Creating a Role Play
------------------------------
Now that literacy has been embedded into your mind, we can begin creating roleplays.
Creating a role play is pretty simple once you get the hang of it. As I explained before, there are original and unoriginal roleplays. Whichever you choose, you are going to need a storyline, or plot, rules, and a few other things. So, get ready for the thrill ride on how to make a roleplay!
[0.5a] Creating a Story
------------------------------
Storylines are the most important part of a roleplay, as I stated before. In fact, a storyline IS the roleplay. You can't have a roleplay if you don't have a storyline? So, seeing as this is so necessary, I will begin to explain how to create one!
First, what you really want to think about, is what your story is based on. Simply, is it original or unoriginal? If it is original, you will have to come up with your own story, really. If it is unoriginal, you can skip a few steps.
For original roleplays, you want to think about what your story is going to be. For example, do you want a band of companions to set out on an adventure to fight an evil dragon? Or do you want to go around a city shooting people? It's up to you really, and no one can actually tell you how to imagine. That being said... USE YOUR IMAGINATION. That's what roleplaying is. The use of creativity. ( This is why, I rarely participate in unoriginal roleplays. I prefer creativity in originality over slight imagination put into something pre-created. Enough about me though.. let's get back to you! ).
Most storylines take place in past/present/future, or oftenly referred to as, Midievil/Realisitc/Sci-Fi.
Midievil ( Past )- A roleplay taking place in the past, normally of a historic event.
Realistic (Ppresent )- A roleplay taking place in the present. These roleplays are normally that of war, romance, or comedy in present times.
Sci-Fi ( Future )- A roleplay taking place in the future, normally. This kind of roleplay could feature an alien, or something entirely different, just not exactly 'realistic'.
Basically.. create a story. You don't have to choose these things beforehand, but sometimes it helps.
[0.5b] Rules
------------------------------
Every roleplay has to have rules. They are the basic guidelines and limitations of your roleplay, and basically tell people what, and how you want. Here are a few rules you might want to consider.
Profanity - How much do you want people to swear in your roleplay? Do you want only a few words usable, all of them, or not at all?
Godmoding - Godmoding is being ultimately powerful and virtually unbeatable. This happens a lot in roleplays, and if you don't want it, state so.
Powerplaying - This is the most annoying thing anyone can do in roleplay, besides be illiterate. Powerplay is when you operate someone elses character without permission ( actually, even with permission it is powerplay, ). Do you want it in your roleplay? I personally hate it, and believe it is unfair to take control of someone else's role. Unless of course, they have permission to.
There are many other rules to use, but you get the point. Just use your imagination and creativity to make some more. When it comes to your roleplay, it's up to you. ;D
[0.5c] Creating a Character
------------------------------
Creating a character is the second most important part of making a roleplay. With no characters, the story wouldn't go anywhere. So, this is how to make one!
Every great roleplayer follows a basic outline of detail of their character, called a Template. A template, basically, is a list of headlines filled out according to your character's attributes. Here is a basic template,
Name : ( The name of your character )
Age : ( How old your character is )
Gender : ( Is your character a girl, a boy, or something else? )
Appearance : ( What does your character look like? Is he/she tall, slender, short, fat? In most roleplays you are allowed to post a picture in this catagory, but if without one, or not allowed to, provide a brief description of your character's appearance. )
History/Biography : ( The biography is very important. It provides an insight on your character's past - what happened to them?/how did they end up where they are now?/where have they been? <-- these questions should all be answered here. I personally provide a detailed description of my character's past. This is usually what you want to do. )
Here are a few examples of well written templates -
www.finalfantasyforums.net/hall-of-warriors/azrael-8288.html by Stryfe.
and ( not to gloat or anything.. I just have a lack of enthusiasm for finding another good template. )
http://www.finalfantasyforums.net/hall-of-warriors/crane-8846.html
Reading these will probably give you the best example on how to do a template and create a character. But of course, if that fails, you could always model them after your own life. Not exactly, but you could use some interesting past events from your life and put them into your character!
A sidenote: There are many characters, original, unoriginal, and the like. I prefer to make completely original characters, by making them start their journey when I create them. By using them in roleplays and battles, I build on their biography, and overall, live the life of the character. This gives your character COMPLETE originality, and if that's what you're aiming for, you should do exactly that.
[0.6] Role Play Battles
------------------------------
Role Play Battles occur when two or more people decide to battle with their characters, either in and during a roleplay, or outside of one by creating a seperate ( and usually shorter ) storyline. They may be questing for the evil dragon and find each other intimidating to the point where they must battle, or they have simply called each other out to battle for the hell of it. Whichever it may be, battling is the same.
Now, the basics.
There are two types of battles - Power Character, and Melee.
Power Character - This type of battle is that between two or more people with special abilities, such as being able to control elements or use magic. Basically, a final fantasy or kingdom hearts character would be, power characters.
Melee - Good old hand to hand, sword to sword combat. This type of battle is between two or more realisitc people battling with their fists, sowrds, guns, or any other realistic weapon. No magical, out-of-the-ordinary abilities involved.
The two main rules, which apply to both ( not always Godmoding to melee ), are Godmoding and Powerplaying.
Godmoding - Godmoding is being invincible or unbeatable unfairly ( or at all, actually ). Remember not to godmode. This is an often occurance in battles, and isn't fair to the other participant
Powerplaying - NEVER DO THIS. Powerplaying is opperating someone else's character. This is a big no-no. You should never, under any circumstances ( unless given permission to by the owner of the character ) powerplay.
Keep these rules in mind. They are the two main rules that will govern a battle.
Now, the anatomy of a battle.
A battle is a simple, but yet complex thing. It takes place between two or more people ( as stated before ) and has the same basic concept of roleplay; playing the role of your character. However, there is one more rule that operates how the battle will process. The rule is, a turn-turn based function, that allows each participant to act, and react. To every action, there must be a reaction, correct? Correct. So, I will go through a simple example, hopefully clearly stating how this turn-by-turn effect works.
Jacob swung his fist at Paul.
Paul sidestepped, dodging the fist.
Jacob swung again.
Paul sidestepped again. In attempt to retaliate, he swung his own fist.
Jacob was hit.
Now, if you will take the time to notice, each person gives the other person time to react. The rule of powerplay should be exampled here;
Jacob swung and hit Paul in the face.
Paul was forced to fall, having no way to escape.
See the difference? Powerplay eliminates the chance at your opponent retaliating. So, keep it fair, go turn-by-turn, and give your opponent his/her time to react. Meaning, don't not give them a chance. Always let them decide what hits and what doesn't.
Now, this might seem unfair as well. To tell the truth, there's no way around it. You just have to trust the other person to actually let a hit land. However, there are ways to make your attack effective without being unfair. Example,
Jacob swung from the left at Paul's face.
Paul sidestepped to the right.
Jacob immediately swung again, this time from the right.
Paul was hit, unable to dodge again.
Things like that. Now, this might be a skeptical example, but hopefully, you get the picture. Note, there are other, more complex ways to make sure your attack hits. Again, this might also seem slightly unfair at times, but I assure you, there are ways out of EVERY attack. You just have to use your brain ( Yes, your brain ) to imagine a way. As stated before; isn't that what roleplaying really is? Imagination? The answer of course, is yes.
Now, I'll teach you how to start a battle. By making a thread in the correct area ( on FFF, the colliseum forum ) you can call out another character and challenge them to battle. Just remember to keep the two main rules in mind! Now, go create a battle or two! Have fun. ;]
[1.0] The Omniverse ( An Introduction )
------------------------------
Yes. I know what you are thinking. One of two things - Oh! I know what this is! or What the hell is an Omniverse? Well, I'll provide a quote from a friend of mine - Lord of Chaos. ( Even though, the Omniverse cannot, and will not be explained fully, ever, he provides a good description, and possibly best description that will ever be mustered ).
The Omniverse. So many ways one could explain it... so many ways that people have already tried. I have found myself to often describe it like this, in my past and current experiences:
The Omniverse isn't a Universe. It isn't a Multiverse. If you were to somehow put all planes, dimensions, realities, worlds, solar systems, galaxies, universes, and multiverses into an Acorn Shell, you would get the Omniverse. It is as simple as it is named: Omni -- All; Verse -- Collection. This seems weird, but it is a set truth. All Role-Play, games, books, movies, and anything of a fictional nature takes place within this monstrous cluster of all things within a relative boundary of the imaginative and dulchred. It is always expanding to the infinite and vanishing to the negative.Thus, the Omniverse shall never, ever cease to exist.
That might sound a little fancy or worded oddly, but hey, it is a simple truth. One of few that exist in life (even if this isn't real life...ironic...ha). No one can really say they know the full Omniverse...because this would be impossible; mainly because of that second-to-last sentence. However, I will start you on the road to at least a basic knowledge of it and its workings.
I feel that Role-Players need to familiarize themselves with the Omniverse, to know that, not only is there more out there than they realize, but that everything has a way of tying together, and there is always a chance for something new.
... and that pretty much sums up the Omniverse.
[1.1] Planes
------------------------------
In the Omniverse, are seven precursor planes. These are the seven primary planes, and from each one of them, two dominant planes spawn. From these dominant planes, are multiple other planes ( but they aren't very important at the moment ). So, let's get started. I will discuss, in order of how they lay... in importance, and in stature (In other words, if you were to look at a diagram of the Omniverse and how the planes lie you would see them in this order...either from inner to outer or from top to bottom, depending how you want to look. My personal favorite is that they are all intertwined).
[1.1a] The Plane of Chaos
------------------------------
From this plane...all has come, and to it... all will return.
You've probably heard those words before in various stories and religions. Well, truth is, most things center around things forming from a chaotic epicenter of energy or darkness. Thus is true in the Omniverse. This plane is also called the Primary Plane, though while slightly more important than the others... it serves no higher purpose. Upon this plane, only one being exists -- Father Chaos...Lord Chaos... God Chaos...God of -- You get the picture. He, she, it, whatever you want to call it (though primarly thought of as masculine), lies at the center of this plane... usually in a deep slumber. Upon this plane lies chaos, in its raw form. You can't really say chaos energy... because energy is a by-product.
It is below this plane (once again, depending how you look at their layout) that the Nexus exists. The Nexus is simply the point were all things meet... the Chaos Plane not withstanding, seeing as how if anything were to truly connect with the plane without a proper connection, then everything would be eradicated...and the Omniverse would have to try and start... all... over... again. From this plane, chaos seeps into the other planes... as to why this chaos doesn't destroy things, remains to be investigated, but it more than likely has to do with the fact that it doesn't pass directly into a plane... but absorbs the plane itself, in an odd kind of way.
(Note: For those wondering or guessing, this is where Valyon draws one of his most powerful resources -- Chaos itself. )
Now, some of you might be saying, that "Chaos cannot be a Precursor... because there has to be order (or law, whatever) to balance it." NO, this is not true. Chaos in itself, is so...chaotic, that it creates an odd balance; it in itself is the order to the Omniverse. However, order is on another topic...which will be covered later.
[1.1b] The Astral Plane
------------------------------
This plane... is the one that most usually try to use in a fight or other things. This plane, is where your mental self exists, your soul, so to speak. The Ethereal Plane is a sub-level of this plane and is known as a Dominant Plane. Either way, the Astral Plane is basically where people like shamen draw their powers from. This plane is so closely molded to the material plane, that the two are sometimes undiscernable.
Think of it like this. When a dragon takes a human form, his body has to go somewhere... it shifts to the Astral Plane. Those who are able to see on both the Material plane and Astral can see the dragon in his true form... as if it were an aura of sorts around him. Astral abilities are among some of the most powerful techniques that can be mastered. However, mastery is difficult, considering there is a chance you could end up destroying yourself. This plane is the first beyond the physical, but is more denser than the next ones.
It is also this plane in which most can use to travel to other worlds, planes, and "time" periods. This plane is sort of like the step between all the rest of the planes, in a sense. However, it is a Precursor for the exact same reason -- it connects the other planes. There are several layers to this plane in itself, without the Dominant Planes that descend from it.
The Astral Plane is the plane of thought, memory, and psychic energy; it is where gods go when they die or are forgotten (or, most likely, both). It is a barren place with only rare bits of solid matter; some creatures, such as the tyrannous githyanki, use the petrified corpses of dead gods as floating fortresses. The Astral Plane is unique in that it is infinitesimal instead of infinite; there is no space or time here, though both catch up with you when you leave. The souls of the newly dead from the Prime Material Plane pass through here on their way to the afterlife or Outer Planes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For now, this is all I can give. I'll have some new sections up as soon as I am able, and revamped previous sections ( Such as the whole Omniverse bit. I'd like to explain it in my own way, without the use of LoC's material. )
Without LoC, the Omniverse section wouldn't have been possible. So.. thanks to him for making it possible to understand.
Also, I'd like to make a referrence to Stryfe's guide to role-playing. If you need a more in-depth role-play guide, read it. It's pretty damn good. - http://www.finalfantasyforums.net/role-playing-central/stryfes-guide-to-role-playing-9123.html
... and, well... enjoy. Later.
