I've noticed that alot of stuff about Twilight fans lately, and how crazy some of them behave, and that's inspired to make this thread. But, then I thought for a moment, and realized that almost every fandom is crazy. Even this one, Final Fantasy, has it's share of crazies. Another fandom of which I have long been a member, and the only other forums I frequent, Harry Potter, and I feel free to admit that we are crazy as well.

I've spent hours debating about fictional characters, their relationships, the quality of each book. I've gotten angry, been privy to flame wars, and been insulted for my views. Does it make me crazy because I do this often? Or is it normal?

What makes a fandom crazy? What makes a fan crazy? Are all fans a bit crazy?? Is it only crazy if it involves violence?

I'm awaiting your answers.

First, the whole damn world is crazy. Second, I only have trouble with fans who can be classified as trolls. Take Twilight, it's just a fad and will pass. The writing in the books isn't even that great. As for FF fans I only have a problem with fans who say FFVII iz the greatest the rest suxxors. And the like. So basically anyone who can't respect another person's opinion. I don't see anything wrong with getting attached to a character be it in a game or a book. My favorite character of all time is Lestat from Anne Rice just like another person's favorite could be Harry from Harry Potter. It's all just opinion and it's mainly trolls and closed minded people that give fandom a bad name.

a reason for this online 'craziness' is that we don't actually SEE each other, we're talking to a paragraph most of the time, and on a cold medium like this it's easy to misinterpret sentences to be harsher than they really are. i consider a person crazy when they make their lives revolve around their fandom...

I guess everyone has madness, craziness in them. Just needs something to ignite it. The latest happens to be Twilight as we all know. Harry Potter was the same. I dont understand, maybe its how popular or unpopular the series is to appeal to the odd person. If that makes sense lol. Im mad on Muse and Matt Bellamy and go on about marrying him, jumping him, etc. But Im not going to attack him ... I may try and steal a snog off him rofl. But I wouldnt hurt him.

The ones who harm are attention seekers and I guess they are obessing over something they seem as mysterious and forbidden.

So, from what I'm getting from most of you that violence is the main thing that seperates fan from crazy. I would agreew with that. So, is there anything else that makes them different?

I've never understood the starstruck thing. I don't look at celebrities as these royal, magical aliens. They're human beings. I mean, I'm a fan of either who the person is or what they do, but I never actually cared enough to spend money at a concert or anything. The only person I'd go see in concert is probably Lady GaGa, but because she's a great performer from what I've seen on television/youtube/etc. Not because she's famous.

So I'm not sure what it is exactly. I can't imagine looking at people like they don't have feelings because they have talent/are on tv/etc., so I can't really say. I mean, when I was little I remember being amazed that Britney Spears ate food and walked around like a normal person, but I never wanted to scream about it. And I was little. Back then, they really didn't show you much of a celebrity being human. Not from what I can remember, anyway.

The nice thing about the Twilight series is that the fad will pass. Eventually to continue receiving the attention these fans desire, they will have to move on to another series (or a more mature phase in their lives). It's probably better to be that dedicated to a job or physical relationships than a fictional book.

For fans of games like Dungeons and Dragons, the fad never DOES pass, and players can have their lives consumed by it if they continue dedicating most of their lives to it and a group of friends encourages the behavior. I'm refuse to play MMO games for exactly this reason.

If you want to see crazy insane fans, go to any convention. lol but take caution.

I think people are crazy when they develop a crush on a fictional or ever real person and actually believe that the love is reciprocated. I remember in high school, two girl ended their friendship over some Harry Potter character. The would draw pictures of themselves with said character, write stories with them as the charcter's love interest and even write letters to him.

Also, it's scary when fans hate each other over differing opinions over character. It's most extreme when fans debate a love triangle, a who will win in a fight, or who is the hottest. Seriously, the characters are not real.

And last, when someone believes that they are a character. The most extreme form is seen in cosplaying. Cosplaying can be harmless fun, but some people take it way to far to the point where they believe they are the character and will go as far as to wear the costume as part of their daily routine. I saw a documentary called Trekkies... it was scary. Some lady wore her Star Trek uniform to court and when she was reprimanded said that if a solider could wear his uniform to court then she should also be allowed to. Another family dressed themselves and their children up as Star Trek characters on a daily basis.

I can not wait till the Twilight fad passes.

I love the classic Superman vs Goku debate in vs forums. People get SOOOO pissed when you bring that up, and even though I am strictly in the Goku camp I realize that they are both fictional characters and will never actually come into contact in their respective universes. Getting upset about it is pointless (people do it anyways).

Amen to that! I seriously think this is a bit ridiculous, I mean I guess I would have to see it from a girl's point of view. Seriously though.. I'll relate it better in a genre I know..

Let's talk music craved fans. I've been to quite a few concerts, but never got so crazy where women insisted of taking off their bra mid concert (unless I was at the wrong band). I've hear a lot of things from flipping panties on stages, to a bunch of other stuff as well.. fans go crazy for the lead singer usually and take it far to far. Even Johnny Cash had a huge following of lunatic fans from what I heard. I mean.. these kids or grown up men who sing are primarily in it for the whole fame and glory and ladies these days, rather than singing; so I would assume they are getting their wish.. Rock of Love for instance... Lead singer of Poison. Makes you a bit sick..

I like Eminem, but I think the people who go on national television dressing up, dying their hair like him, and faking his accent are really pushing it.

Okay, I have a new perspective on this issue. I would say that a normal fan can accept that other people don't like all the things that they do, and realize that that doesn't make that person any less of a person. A crazy person can't do this, and instantly hates people who dislike their interest.

As an example, I love Madonna to death, and don't really like when people insult her, but when they do have a valid point, I can accept it, and not beat them to death. Compare that to a crazed Twilight fan, who is far as I can tell never read the book, who insist on getting violent when people refuse to see Edward's Hawtness.
