Nintendo The Last Story

This is sounding like it could be interesting, I will certainly be getting this when it comes out for the Nintendo Wii, since even though I am a huge Final Fantasy fan, I am still a Nintendo fanboy at heart. xD

Thanks for these updates Swift, keep it up. :monster:

All Mistwalker time on The Last Story, no new 360 titles any time soon

Those of you hoping for a sequel to Lost Odyssey or a true Blue Dragon 2, this is not your lucky day:

Hironobu Sakaguchi's Mistwalker Corp is now on Twitter, and they've been surprisingly open in responding to and interacting with fans of their games over the micro-blogging service.

The company recently responded to questions regarding another Xbox 360 title from them, stating that right now all their efforts are on The Last Story, their newly announced Wii RPG. This means a sequel to 360 RPGs Lost Odyssey or Blue Dragon or a revival of cancelled 360 JRPG Cry-On are off the cards for the forseeable future.

"At this moment, we are putting all our time and effort on The Last Story. Hope you own Wii..." they tweeted back in response to a fan who asked about the potential for another 360 RPG from the company.

The Last Story has been confirmed for Japan sometime this year. Details on when it could land in the West are currently unconfirmed.
At least this means Sakaguchi will be dedicating himself primarily to The Last Story then. It had better turn out good, Hironobu.

Ummm its great to see that he is really dedicated in making The Last story but no Lost Odyssey II makes me Sad :sad3: Oh well I guess no 360 rpgs by Hironobu for a LONG time. But Olivia its still good news! The Last story will be really good if Hironobu is really dedicated in his work! But I wonder if it will convince lots of people to buy Wii :hmmm: Thanks for the update love <3

The Last Story to have a 'real time system'

Sakaguchi has been busy blogging. Once again, don't expect a lot of information to come out yet. He's only giving us snippets until the game's formal reveal in E3 this year.

Mistwalker head honcho Hironobu Sakaguchi has revealed that his new title The Last Story will have a 'real time' system in it in a new blog on the official company website.

"Production of the last story is advancing smoothly. But, I want you to understand how difficult it is to finish the last fixes and it is time consuming in RPG creation. There is an unknown territory for me because of the real time system exists in it. But I believe that the hurdle will invent something new."

This could either mean real passage of time, or a full real-time action RPG style battle system - which the Final Fantasy creator means is up in the air right now. Sakaguchi goes on to share some of his philosophy on game design in general:

"Of course, it's possible to finish it really quick, but the effort we put in in 2years would be wasted. The final seasoning is very important. So I made up my mind carefully and I'm working with scrupulous attention. Anyway the sense of security is necessary to the foundation so that you can enjoy yourself without any logic."

Sounds good to us, but we'll leave the game producing to him. The Last Story will be out in Japan sometime this year, and will hopefully arrive in the West in a timely fashion.

What does he mean by Real Time system? Is he reffering to the battle sytem Olivia? He does say its possible to finish the game fast but what does he mean by Real time system. Is it Real Time strategy? Im sure the game will be really long. I mean it is an rpg by Final Fantasy's creator :awesome: Thanks for this Olivia <3

To go with the article.....

Just as I expected, Sakaguchi is not going in SE's direction and making a sci-fi world or a world with an abundance of industry or modern day technology. He's gone for a rather traditional medieval-like kind of world.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyway, some artwork of Ruri Island where an empire is hoping to utilise the power of dangerous magic to lead its people to prosperity (he's been taking notes from FFVI I see). You can see these from the article - but I thought I'll put it here because it looks nice.

Haven't completed Blue Dragon yet, but it's an awesome RPG game and not forgetting the Lost Odyssey (One of the best RPG ever for XBOX 360!) Can't really wait for this release! Go Mistwalker go Hironobu!

Towns Architecturally Inspired By French and Italian Villages

Hmm....I don't know if there's anymore point in updating this thread now. Interest seems to have long waned. I'll probably wait for the E3 updates after this one last one.

The Last Story team have updated the game’s official column once again, this time with information about the towns on Ruli Island and their inhabitants.

Sakaguchi reveals that, from an architectural standpoint, small villages from France and Italy were used as the inspiration for the game’s towns, in order to convey the feeling that there is a rich history behind them. The game’s producer follows up by writing that, while towns in other games are usually abundant with dead-ends to avoid letting the player get lost, The Last Story features large towns, and that allowing the player to get lost and wander randomly through them is one of the goals of the design.

The behaviour of the inhabitants and passers-by on the street also changes periodically, sometimes in noticeable ways, and other times in a more subtle manner. Overall, the goal behind the cities in general is to give off the impression that the towns are a living, breathing place that you want to explore.

Here’s another piece of concept art — I love the cat on the barrel — along with a map of Ruli Island:

The text on the map appears to be a partial, rather literal translation of the last column update. It reads:

“Ruli Island is located at the entrance of the only open bay of the continent surrounded by the mountains.

The place is gathered by wealth and power because of the linchpin of traffic and defense of the empire behind it.

A huge battery is enshrined, skilled knights and reckless mercenary soldiers prepare for the enemy’s invasion.

At the wealthy town of Ruli’s, the coquettish voice is like intoxicated from the transient party wraps around everything, despite the ground of entire empire being covered by corruption, while the neighboring castle is filled by a weird ghostly air with an eerie magical power.

Tonight as well, an evil spirit is lurking near by, like it may be attracted to Ruli’s strange power.”

No No No Olivia Its fine xD. I might of missed some updates because of Final Fantasy XIII but now I see em. I really like that artwork of the places. Beautiful art is beautiful. So plz I till have LOTS of Interest love. I thank you for updating <3

The talk about towns being rather labyrinth-like that require a bit of exploration sounds really interesting to me. The thought of having towns that you can actually get lost in is intriguing, though I wonder how Mistwalker intends to pull this off.

By the looks of the concept art - no modern day elements or sci-fi elements at all as expected. This is definitely a Sakaguchi game.

The artwork is beautiful and does have me excited for the game. The city artwork gives off a bit of a classic FF vibe, which is definetely a good thing! I do wonder when Mistwalker is going to treat us to some actual screen shots from the game though. Beautiful art is all well and good, but I'd really like to see how it translates into actual gaphics :)

The director (still unidentified) confirms that the characters depicted in the illustration are the main character and heroine.

"There is a wall between the two," he writes. Based off the director's comments, it seems that there's something keeping the two apart and unable to live their dreams together.

The director also writes that in The Last Story, there will be a number of other stories besides the story of these two characters. He mentions:
  • The fear of speaking your true feelings
  • The mystery of the father who went missing on boat
  • The difficulty a leader has in making decisions
  • The close accomplice who's turned to evil
  • The foolish archaeologist's prison break
Concludes the director, "It's very important to merge battles and gameplay with story. Neither can stand on its own. Once both are connected together, the characters will rise up as "human" within the container of a game."

The game's producer (also unidentified) states, "The characters who appear in The Last Story all walk their own paths and have their own stories." He likens this to the real world, where no one has lived their lives following the same path as you.

The main part of The Last Story's story will focus on the main character, says the producer. However, he believes players will also have a chance to be touched by the stories other characters as well. "Once you've been touched by that, it's likely that you'll be able to feel their [the characters outside of the main character] true feelings, which you did not see before."

That's fine and all, but what's with the tiger?

At first I couldn't stop giving Sakaguchi shit for picking "The Last Story" as a title, it sounded so cheap to me. But now I honestly think I might get my hands on a Wii for this game :/
I'm definitely looking forward to this one.

Damn Ryan Thanks again haha. That is a very beautiful piece of art right there. I like the 2 characters so far. The heroine looks like she is on the cute side. Yes what is with the Tiger. I can already see that this game will be Like Lost Odyssey and Im proud of That!

Thanks for filling in while I was out, Ryan! ^_^

Aww, I love the artwork, especially as it has a tiger there (please say that it can talk and that it's a playable character - though I doubt it). As for the character designs - good old Sakaguchi for keeping conventional with them. It's always nice to step back into traditional JRPGs with both SE and Tri-Ace starting to really innovate with their games now.

I like the idea of having individual tales for each character. I hope they're playable and that they intertwine together as one similar to what happens in DQIV and FFXIII. That way, you won't be sick of playing as the same generic male-with-sword character.

Oh yes, it looks like the game is nearly completed. This is what Sakaguchi blogged (as found by Andriasang):

In a post titled "Tokyo" today, Sakaguchi wrote, "Recently, I often end up waking up at 5:00. Is it jet lag? Or am I on edge because LS is approaching completion?"

So it looks like the game will be out very soon. As for jet lag, I seem to be suffering from it as well. xD

This week's post at The Last Story development blog gives us our first hints at gameplay.

The post is titled "Chaos and Order." These are themes Mistwalker CEO Hironobu Sakaguchi addressed months before The Last Story's official announcement at the Mistwalker blog.

Writes the director, "Making order from chaos. Or, pulling the enemies who were in order into chaos. Using one of the main character's skills called 'Gathering,' we wanted to make a system that would let you control that type of situation."

During battle, the current focus of the enemy is marked with a line, called a "Pointer." "This is probably the most special feature when you see this game," writes the director. The pointer's color can be used for strategy, as it will indicate enemy type, such as soldier, mage, or archer who attempts to disrupt your own mage's magic chants.

One example of this system's use is in a situation where enemies are focusing their sights on your mage. You can use gathering to turn their sights on to you, assisting your mage in chanting his magic.

"Controlling chaos and order on the battle field ties in to victory," finishes the director.

The producer notes that when playing sports or doing anything where you face off against an enemy, the first thing you do is create a strategy. In order to have all members move in accordance with a prescribed strategy, participants need to cooperate, sending signals to each other and getting into formations.

"Combat in games is the same," writes the producer. "Ordered movements of your allies is the key to victory. But what if there were an opponent who could bring confusion to that order?"

A story board at the blog shows how the gathering and pointer systems work, beginning with the start of battle (above) and continuing to the main character gathering the enemy focus on himself so that a party member mage can successfully cast a spell that makes the main character's sword more powerful.

First Glimpse at The Last Story

Mistwalker and Nintendo saved the big The Last Story reveal for Famitsu. This week’s issue has actual in-game images and a few of them were leaked on the Internet early.

Most of the information in Famitsu’s article are from the blog posts written by the unnamed producer and director. Some pieces of concept art, such as a view of the Stargazing Tower, are shown side by side with screenshots. The last page shows battle screenshots and a sample of the gathering system and shows focus lines pointing towards the player. It appears, there is an off screen enemy too.
