The Fitness Thread

Wow. Seph's a doctor now? Can I start calling you doc?

Actually, you sound more like a commercial.

I say you eat 3 good meals and then exercise.

Oh. you sounded like those birth control pill commercials. "Don't take xynax(or whatever its called) without first contacting a doctor....ect..."lol.

Eating 3 meals a day is vital if you want to lose weight, none of that "I'm not eating anything that has more calories than a lettuce leaf" bullshit. Honestly, skipping meals makes you put on weight [unless you literally eat nothing]. Because you wont be getting any nutrients, your body will just store every single ounce of fat it has - thus you become bigger. It'll then start to digest that fat once you stop eating.

Seriously, it's so unhealthy. If you want to lose weight, just eat a balanced diet, and yes that includes fat, and exercise regularly [that doesn't mean run 7 miles everyday]. Doing it all progressively is the winner :).

It's all a concept of moderation. Your body reacts that way because of metabolism. It's sometimes genetic, but it can still be altered throughout your lifetime. Just because you have a slow metabolism doesn't mean you can never be skinny. I know people use it as an excuse, but it just means you have to work harder. Now that doesn't mean a lot of people have slow metabolism, but if you've been treating your body poorly, that might explain it.

Actually, there are certain kinds of fat you should avoid, like the trans fats from most meat. Instead, you should comsume the fats and oils from fish because it is healthier, and might actually help you to lose more weight.

And for those who like potatoes--there's a healthier alternative with less starch. Sweet potatoes.

hmmmm...interesting topic ^_^ am not fat but i want to get fitter cos i don't want to get fat :) but i want to be able to exercise in the house but i don't know where to start...so i don't start lol  any tips anyone? xx

An easy way to do it from home is to get a workout DvD. You can do it anytime you feel like it, and you don't have to drive to a gym or anything. Carmen Electra's Strip Tease is really fun and a good workout too!

Yea if you just eat 3 well balanced meals in decent portions you will have a better matabollism then if you say...skip breakfast, eat 2 meals, and snack inbetween.

I do this and I also play soccer and basketball regularly (because I like to I guess), and I have never had a problem with weight.

Very true, your metabolism will be very messed up if you skip meals. Especially breakfast, if you don't eat a good balance breakfast and skip it, your metabolism will be thrown off for the entire day...

I don't consider myself to be very fit. True, I do go to the gym once or twice a week; and I go fencing once or twice a week (I quite enjoy it) but I wouldn't consider myself to be very fit though. Although I am probably more fit than some other people I know are. I wouldn't describe myself as a sports fanatic either. I dislike competitive sports strongly, because you can get beaten up quite badly and because they are dominated by macho, alpha males who think they can just walk over anyone they like and plus I just hate the general nature of cut-throat, Darwinistic competition. I am not a very competitive person; I believe cooperation is the way forward. I am useless in competitions and I tend to shy away from all sporting competitions. The only kind of competition I enjoy are the kind you do amongst friends like going ten pin bowling or playing pool. I like that sort of friendly competition amongst mates sporting competitions are strictly verboten in my book.

Despite that I do fencing mostly as a way of keeping fit and (because I don't go into any tournaments) I also do it is a form of friendly competition amongst some of my peers there.

I'm fairly fit. I walk/run at least 30 minutes almost every single day. Also, Dance Dance Revolutions a pretty nice way to lose weight, I play that alot. I eat three meals a day, unless I'm sick. But it's horrible tryin' to stay away from sweets 'cause I have a big sweet tooth. :P

With most of the girls in my classes, they can run longer then I can usually, but I can lift more and put up with more. So, I guess I'm more on the stronger side then speed. I'm thicker built them most of my girl school mates.

I'm confused ...

I do horse riding, go to the gym, walk, go outside, blah blah blah. I don't eat an awful lot of things, not even junk food. I hardly eat :P Yet, the pounds keep piling on.

My friend is like a stick, yet his average day consists of 3 sausage rolls, his large dinner, several chocolate bars, 7 packets of crisps and no exercise. How the hell?

Well, you just said you rarely eat. If you don't eat, you'll pile on the pounds. I know that doesn't make sense. But as I mentioned, your body will store every ounce of fat it can because it's not getting any other nutrients. Seriously Dave, it's damaging.

I remember I used to skip meals all the time, because I just never got hungry. My metabolism slowed right down and I actually gained weight and became a lot less fitter. I wrecked my body systems right up.

Since then I started to eat 3 regular meals. I'm a lot fitter and slimmer. I'll show you a picture sometime, ok Dave?

So, my advice to you is to eat 3 meals a day. They don't even have to be big, because you're used to not eating your stomach may not be able to cope with 3 big portions, so just build it up slowly.

And remember, just because you're piling on the pounds, doesn't mean it's fat. Muscle weighs a lot more than fat. Horse riding really builds up your thigh muscles, they're one of the heaviest in your body. Swimming is also really good exercise as it uses all the muscles in your body. I bet your pounds are down to muscle. At least, that's how it sounds to me. :)

^ Tell that to my big muscular belly ;) Hahaha.

When I said I don't eat much, I meant it to come across that I don't just stuff myself full of junk food. I eat my Breakfast, Dinner, Lunch and sometimes supper. There's not a lot in between, to be honest.

I would say that my body is in extremely good shape, other than the fact that I smoke Cigs and Drink Beer. But I played HS Football and Hockey, I still do play hockey twice a week. I jog every now and then when I have time. I also do Pushups and Crunches to keep my chest and stomach in shape. You might see me lifting some weights once in a while. My thumbs are also very strong, because of the intense Video Game training I do.

I enjoy cycling but I only do on average 20-25 miles a week with my friends and it's more a social thing. Nothing too extreme (simply because extreme isn't an option in pancake-flat Suffolk).

Trimmed and toned? Trimmed maybe, but not in the good way. I'm a bit on the skinny side you see (high metabolism or small stomach or something) and I get very little upper-body exercise.

Fitness is something that's becoming more of a concern to myself for some reason. It never used to be, but now I'm finding myself loathing my appearance more and more, ergo my need to do something about it.

However, I'm not really the 'devoted' type, when it comes to this at least. Exercise always goes down a notch on my priorities when say, that fresh dozen of Krispy Kreme doughnuts arrive, "Oh damn, I've got homework," or "Eh... after this tv show." Needless to say, 'tv show' turns into 'tomorrow' which goes to 'the day after tomorrow' etc. etc. I need a way to stay focused and motivated - but how?

As hinted by the Krispy Kremes, I am quite the sweet tooth. I just can't resist the junk foods, and even the healthy things like carrots I end up turning bad by dipping them in French Onion Dip or something. Anything besides watermelon that's healthy, tastes good, and is filling?

And on a last note of the night: weightlifters - how much can you lift? How often do you lift? How many reps and sets of each? Which types of exercises do you do (i.e. curls, bench-press, etc.)?
