*Spoilers* There may be spoilers, so read at your own risk in this thread *Spoilers*

I've noticed theres plenty of threads about people raving how great a game FF 13 is...

This thread is aimed for those of you who want to Rant about it and.

Rules:

1) Do not rant flame at other PEOPLE or their reasons/ideas.

2) stay respectful

3) Discuss your reasons if you disagree

==========================================================

I made my own Rating of the game that you can find here: http://www.finalfantasyforums.net/f...-fantasy-xiii-member-review-thread-35166.html

I'd also refer you to Chip's review under mine, also points out things I missed.

My reasons for giving FF 13 3/5 stars?

Basically (which I go into more depth in my Review)

1) Incredibly basic battles (I am now at 30hrs game-play far into Gran Pulse and I can still mash X to win battles) Though granted I have started to need to switch Paradigms. But still all in all, mashing X non stop. You can cast Libra, this tells your entire party what to cast to do the most damage. Since you cant even control them anyway, You can simply switch up paradigms from Offensive, Defensive and healing, and sometimes for bosses, buff/de-buff paradigms, and just keep pressing the X button and sit back and watch.. I've had no trouble with any boss using this method.

2) Extremely Linear gameplay, and no room for exploration. Even when you reach Gran Pulse Its still basically Just fighting monsters with a Linear map thats been bloated in size.

3) The Marks are Linear.. You go to Cie'th Accept the Mission, Check the map to where the mark is, beat the Mark, and alas.. another Cie'th stone activates right next to the mark you just defeated... Now thats as Linear as you can get, even on a bloated map...

4) No Variety... No quests, no towns, no shops, and no NPC's to interact with.. This is, in my eyes what FF"s are all about.. interacting with the world, having a world map, etc. FF7 was full of it, FF 8 and 9, 10 was a little less but still had them, and 12 was full of it; side-quests, main quests, etc. All FF"s to date had hidden weapons, accessories or abilities to find through side-quests, etc. or simple exploration. FF9 even had a way for you to combine items to make more powerfull ones. FF 7 had Materia. FF 13 has none of that. In-fact your next weapon is simply given to you via a "treasure chest" I.E. the floating orbs.. Granted you can upgrade them, but the look stays the same, and really, you can play and beat FF 13 without ever upgrading past a star rating.

5) In a nutshell you can say that FF 13 is simply running down a long narrow tunnel, fighting random mobs and bosses that are thrown at you with fun little side cutscenes to watch. The only real thing you control is where your party runs down that tunnel, whether it be the left side or the right.. but really that doesnt matter in the slightest, even the battles you can simply spam X.

6) Certain things simply do not make sense... Like half your party suddenly disappears during a cutscene.. I also go into more detail on this in my Review.

What do I like? The story, the story is very well done.

2,3 and 5 could have been combined. 3 and 5 are basically supports for 2, in the sense that they give specific examples of how linear the game is. Otherwise, your points are valid, except for one minor detail, with that I'm pretty sure your weapons DO change when upgraded to the next weapon. Not positive, but I noticed a difference when I upgraded my Gladius for Lightning.

Also, the story was good enough for you to give it a 3/5, when you disliked everything else? Wow. More incentive to beat the game.

I think Final Fantasy 13 is a great game! I mean, you're right that it's completely linear for the first 30 or so hours because they want the players to get a good understanding of the story first, or something.. Idk I read that on IGN I think. I don't really mind it.

I think that for the most part the battles are MODERATELY challenging. I don't think it's just pressing X the whole time and reaching the end of the battles. It gets more complex and strategic because you constantly have to make paradigm shifts. And right now I'm in the beginning of Chapter 10, and Barthandelus (sp?) was TOUGH.

I do think that it sucks that there's no towns though. Even though it had to be one of the most time consuming factors in the past games (side quests.. you know). Towns gave you something to do! But since you buy items and upgrade weapons via save station (which sucks), there's really no need for towns. I know that there's side quests in FFXIII, I wonder how they work without towns..

I think the soundtrack is a little dull.. I mean, the piano jingle in the title page is beautiful. The remixes of that song that play throughout the game are.. no. I don't like it.

But yes, the story line's great. It's intense, I can't wait to see what happens in the end. :D

I give it a 5/5!

It's not as good as FFVII or VIII, but oh, it's a great game.

Since this is basically a review thread it seems and we already have a thread on this, I'm going to close it.
