Hello,

I just wanted to pop in here and share a compilation I just finished, that I think you all would appreciate.

I have been doing this series called "Retro Gaming Retrospective" with my music project Vernian Process. What I've been doing is taking midi files of various old school gaming music and converting them into fully fleshed out orchestral arrangements. Some even include modern instrumentation as well. (I take no credit for the transcription of these midi's, I simply arranged them for my own needs).

The first volume was a tribute to the music of the 16-Bit Sonic the Hedgehog series (which i need to redo now that I have upgraded my studio). This one is my tribute to the music of Final Fantasy VII. And the 3rd will be a tribute to the classic Castlevania games (which should be completed in a few days).

I chose FFVII because it was the first game that really gave me an emotional reaction. I'll never forget that moment. It was then that I realized that Video Games were a medium that were going to explode, taking full advantage of adult themes and dramatic elements.

Most of the tracks I chose have never been recorded with an orchestra (with the exceptions of the Main Theme, and Aeris Theme). You may also notice the last few tracks are bonus pieces taken from the scores to FFVI and IX respectively. As well as the classic credits music "Final Fantasy".

I've gotten a few concerns because of the exclusion of "One Winged Angel", however in order for me to have done that song justice, I would have needed the full Latin choir (which I simply don't have access to).

Anyways, enough babbling from me. Feel free to d-load the collection here:
"Vernian Process - The Cries of the Planet"

I would love to hear any feedback you might have?

Thanks very much for checking out my work,
Josh

I think that is a fantastic selection of tracks you decided to do. I'm currently downloading it now and will give it a listen tonight.

I think it is a brilliant idea though. Too many beautiful tracks that Nobuo composed lack an orchestral version.

I look forward to hearing this.

Also, wow. :O I've heard of you and have listened to some tracks in the past. Steampunk for the win! :monster:

Thanks very much! I look forward to hearing what you think of the set.

I'm also glad to hear that you have already heard of our project. We are just about done with our first full album as a band (previous recordings were all solo efforts). Feel free to pop over to our site and take a listen to the tracks we have available to preview.

Cheers,
Josh

I gave it a listen last night and I think it is really well done. I particularly like what you did with The Great Warrior, Valley of the Fallen Star, The Shinra Corporation and Cid's Theme.

Also, Aeris' theme is probably one of the best versions of the theme I have heard.

I'm very glad you decided to do Judgement Day as well. That is one of the overlooked tracks in FF7, and one of my favourites. You did a very good job with it!

On to the extra tracks, I really liked what you did with those as well. They are some of my favourite themes, especially Terra.

Fantastic work on Final Fantasy to bring it to a close, also. That track always has an impact on me.

Thanks again for posting this.

Yeah, I'll definately go to check out the tracks available to preview on your website.

Thank you! I was really happy with all of those. Especially Cid's Theme. Actually I was playing FFVII a few months ago and I got the Highwind, then when Cid's Theme came on, I was just like "Damn... this song really should be orchestrated". It's such a rousing adventure song. It really encompasses Cid's character progression from a burned out bitter old pilot to a leader who steps up when the time comes. Coincidentally I spent a good deal of time trying to get it just right =)

Same thing with Valley of the Fallen Star, and The Great Warrior. The latter especially hits me every time I hear it, because I think of that moment when Nanaki learns the truth about his father.

Also, Aeris' theme is probably one of the best versions of the theme I have heard.

Wow, that's a huge compliment... since there are many really excellent versions of that piece. And as overdone as it is, I can't think of a song that represents FFVII better (not even One Winged Angel). That was another one that I reworked several times to get just right. I mean you can't release a half assed cover of that track and not expect to be burned at the stake by al of the FF fans lol.

Yes I agree. It is another one of those.. "Hear we go, this is it... the final battle" kind of pieces. I also love that track if you couldn't tell. =)

Fantastic work on Final Fantasy to bring it to a close, also. That track always has an impact on me.

Thank you again! Terra's Theme is also one of my all time favorite game score pieces. Sadly a lot of newer gamers never got around to discovering the classic FF games. I am of the opinion that VI is the best game in the series.

Glad you like the rendition of Final Fantasy as well. That song always hits me when I hear it too. It has a kind of a bittersweet effect, like "Oh we're at the end of journey... no more adventures for this party... time to pop in FF IX" (I never liked VIII very much) LOL.

Thanks again for posting this.

No problem... if it isn't terribly off topic I link the Castlevania one when it is done for you (maybe in your off topic section of the forums).

Yeah, I'll definately go to check out the tracks available to preview on your website.

Excellent, I hope you dig our original compositions as well.

Cheers,
Josh

Yes, that is one of my favourite moments in a Final Fantasy game ever. Nanaki is probably my favourite character from FFVII, so I really feel the theme tunes related to his story.

Agreed, they are overlooked. Final Fantasy VI is perhaps my favourite as well, closely followed by VII.

I think that would be ace. Yeah, there are plenty of non-Final Fantasy sections on this forum. There is a section where people have posted original or cover music.

I think people post it here:
http://www.finalfantasyforums.net/miscellaneous.html

I could be wrong though. In fact... I probably am. If I am though I'm sure a mod would just move it to the right section for you.

Anyway I wouldn't mind hearing the other compilations you have made.

Thank you,

I have heard the Voices of the Lifestream collection, but there were only a handful of songs on it I liked very much (of course I'm not a big fan of super techno mixes of video game music). I purposely tried to keep these versions as close to the originals as possible.
