Okay, spoilers for CoM and 358/2 Days! Don't look if you haven't beaten either game yet and don't wanna be spoiled! :gasp:

In CoM, we see the
replica of Riku
running around and doing their thing. Now during Riku's POV of events, we see
the replica being told that in order to be complete, he'd have to defeat Riku and absorb his...power? Or something to that effect.

Now I have to wonder, was
the replica
the same as Xion?
 
yes, and no.
they were both puppets made by Vexen. They had no purpose. But Xion absorbed Sora/ Roxas' power, while the Riku replica absorbed Riku's power (the replica and Riku faught right after Riku replica was made).

I would assume it was because it was made by the organization to copy sora's powers. She was just a puppet made by the organization just like the Riku puppet so yea. I'd say they were the same.

they both had almost the same purpose.

Riku Replica was made to defeat Sora so the Organization could gain the power of the Keyblade.

Xion, was meant to keep Roxas from waking Sora up. Without Roxas, Sora would never wake up.
 
I am fairly sure, but not 100%,
that they were both part of the Replica Project being conducted by Vexen and Xemnas.
Xion was created using Sora's memories, taken from him during Xemnas and Sora battle in Hollow Bastion. Xion was created to absorb Roxas and become a keyblade mule for the Organization. Basically, she was created from Sora, to absorb Roxas. She was not aware of this until later in the game and that influenced her constant departures from the Organization and is why each time the Organization welcomed her back.
After Axel captures her at the mansion in Twilight Town, Xemnas rewrites her personality so that she is determined and completely focused on absorbing Roxas. This rewrite is broken after she is defeated and manages to say some true words to Roxas before fading away.

Riku Replica on the other hand was created by Vexen so that he could have his own version of Riku to use. However, Repliku (shortened name) hated the fact that he wasn't the real Riku and wanted to destroy the real one so that he could have his own identity.
This goal was put aside for a while when Larxene or Vexen gave Repliku the real Riku's memories so that he could mess with Sora and bring him further in the Castle.
Once Namine shattered the fake memories Repliku went back to trying to destroy the real Riku. He and Axel met up with Zexion and Axel, being the manipulative guy he is, talked Repliku into absorbing Zexion so that he would have his own power making him different from the real Riku, making him his own person.

Depends if you mean defeated as in won the battle or defeated as in killed.
The real Riku weakened Zexion but Zexion survived and fled.
Then Axel and Repliku arrive and Axel, using his silver tounge, manipulated Repliku into thinking that if he absorbs Zexion he will obtain a power the real Riku doesn't have and thus become his own person. Zexion was too weak to defend himself thanks to his very recent fight with the real Riku.

If i remember the cutscene from RE: Chain of memories, Riku defeated Zexion, then Axel killed him, not the Replica. RE: Chain added the Zexion battle and some other left out stuff in the story.
But on Friday I'll go back and check to make sure.

Yes, there was no battle with Zexion in the original.
Axel and Repliku turned up, Axel manipulated, Zexion freaked out and Repliku walked towards Zexion. The screen went black and Zexion went NOOOOOOO (i think he said that).
Thats if I remember correctly of course
 
you are right, it was Replica (looked it up on wiki)
but replica was intended to gain the keyblade just as Xion, but through different methods (idk if this was already said)
 
Yep yep, thats why Vexen chose to clone Riku, the keyblade wielder of darkness (at the time)

Basically, they were both made from the "replica" project. Xion was created from Sora leaked memories to absorb Roxas and garner hearts for Xemnas, whereas Repliku was created as an experiment by Vexen to combat Sora, who Marluxia wanted to use against the organization (CoM) So in essence, they are the same and different. They were both created using similar basis (Sora's memories and Riku's fight data, respectively), but they were both to be used for different effects.
 
The Riku Replica was the less successful of the 2. That's all I have to add, & I think I did it ambiguously enough so as to not spoil anything.
