Every one of my characters are level 99, which is the max. Yuna has the most EXP, Rikku has second most which leaves Paine with the least EXP. My brother and I are about to fight Trema for the 999th or so time, and he had a small 'plan':
Because I have one cat nip ring, we're going to equip one of the girls as a Gunner. My brother told me to equip each of them as Gunner to see who is the best. We assumed because Yuna has the most EXP, she would have a little more HP/MP/defense/strength/etc. but it turns out that each girl is equal.

I understand that gaining experience obviously leads to leveling, but what in the actual heck is the point in having/keeping it? The girls are all level 99, so why does Yuna get more?

Also, I would really like some tips or plans on how to defeat that monster before Trema without being half-dead and how to defeat Trema himself. Because I keep Rikkuing up.

First off with drain all his MP. That will make the battle so much easier. After that switch to your best dress sphere. keep curing and fight fight fight. I had a lot of trouble first fighting him but in the end the prize is worthwhile.

My brother actually defeated him a few minutes after I posted this thread.

Since other people read this, I'll share what he equipped:
The following kept him alive, and worked very well. Keep in mind, each girl was level 99.
Dresspheres (Dark Knight locations video link)
Dark Knight - Yuna
Gunner - Rikku
Dark Knight - Paine

Garment Grids (locations link)
Valiant Lustre - Yuna
I'm not too sure what my brother did with Rikku. I had her equipped with the Chaos Maelstrom garment grid, so it's possible that he kept it that way.
Valiant Lustre - Paine
-Higher Power might work just as well if not better for the two Dark Knights, but we didn't have this grid at the time.

Accessories (locations link)
For Yuna and Paine, it was all about keeping these two alive. They were both equipped the Crystal Bangle, giving them 9999HP. Then they were both equipped the Crystal Gloves which raised their defense by 60.
Because Rikku was a Gunner, she was equipped with Cat nip; when the user is in critical status (low/yellow HP), all attacks do 9,999 damage (Trigger Happy goes excellently with this ring). We also needed her to have auto-haste since after Trigger Happy, the bar is very long, so we equipped the Speed Bracer -which generates constant haste effect. The user is able to cast Hastega because of this accessory, but there was just no time for that.

My brother just basically used the two Dark Knights for healing and reviving. At first, we tried having an Alchemist in there because we had to wait less than a second for items, but reviving the Gunner with an Alchemist wasn't what we wanted. Because Alchemist raises the potency of items, Phoenix Down didn't leave her with critical status/lowHP, and Cat nip wouldn't have worked.

We did the same thing for Trema. We ignored everything said about taking away his MP however, because that was simply just a waste of time. It's all about being quick with Gunner and staying alive with the Dark Knight to obviously avoid a game over.

Believe it or not, this battle was easy. It took my brother 15 minutes.
