I thought Yu Yevon was summoning Dream Zanarkand from within Sin (which he created) so he can preserve the memory of real Zanarkand. So, why in the beginning of the game Sin is destroying Dream Zanarkand?

Because Yu Yevon has been summoning Sin for so long, along with Dream Zanarkand, he has no control over sin. I think it was Jecht coming to get his son Tidus and to do that he had to attack dream Zanarkand. Yu Yevon is no longer a person just that ball thing you fight, so he couldn't have had much of an attachment to Zanarkand.

^ I agree with this. Plus, in the opening scene, Auron greets Sin. Before you get sucked into Sin after DZ events, I'm sure he turns around to Sin and says, "Are you sure?"/"You are sure?" (something to that effect) so obviously it was planned, to get Tidus into Spira. (;

Yeah I think whoever end up becoming sin, does have certain amount of control of it.
like when Sin is listening to the hymn of the fayth in macalania, thats obviously Jecht just enjoying the music

And When Sin did come to Zanarkand it has to seem real and not just like it's there to pick up Tidus.

If transporting a person from DZ to Spira (and vice versa) needs Sin to attack, how come Tidus has only seen Sin attack once? I mean, Auron did go from Spira to DZ, right? Why did Sin have to attack?

Gee, I think I got an answer to my own question! Jecht was showing Tidus Sin's power so Tidus will try to kill him? Correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't think Sin HAS to attack, I think with what Wizard Howl said, it had to seem realistic and not just Sin turning up to give Tidus a lift to Spira. Plus doesn't he see Sin attack a lot? And it makes Tidus wonder why he can't go back? He sees him attack in DZ, then Kilika, then Djose, if I remember correctly.
We know that Auron has been in DZ a long time with Tidus, from various flashbacks. Also, Auron is an
unsent
so it makes sense he could get to DZ so efficiently. There was a discussion regarding Auron and his
unsentness
which could probably back that up. :-)

And the whole Jecht power thing could be an idea too... it rings a bell that, showing him what he can do so he feels the need to defeat him. But then again, it's not a case of what Jecht can do, it's case of what he cannot stop doing.

I wanna go play FFX now.

Auron's dead so I doubt the same rules apply.
Someone mentioning Jecht listening to the hymn of the faith, at the end Jecht explains that when listening to that is the only time he has any control over his actions. Sin was created to be controlled by Yu Yevon, but he lost that ability so Sin automatically attacks any area of civilisation, excluding Bevelle.
I think Jecht managed to travel to Zanarkand, and after that he lost control and Sin went back to a kind of 'autopilot' where he destroys places with technology/people.

Similar to what Björk wrote, I think that Jecht has a modicum of control over the actions of Sin, being that Jecht is the mechanism, if you will, that Yu Yevon uses to keep Sin summoned (is that right?). So, Jecht can probably "steer" where he wants to go, but I think at Sin's core, it is designed for destruction. You would then maybe wonder, if he can steer it, why steer toward towns at all? But, I think that may have to do with Sin's ultimate purpose of destruction being inevitable, and also it could be that Jecht is trying to hear the Hymn he remembers from Zanarkand, which is sung in temples, which are in towns.

I don't know, I'm digging too deep and stretching too much, haha. Just some thoughts out loud.
