Right. So I'm completely new to the Final Fantasy universe, and already I'm falling in love. I'd never really thought about the FF series, due to witnessing some of the older games, back when graphics were chunks of color, but then a few years back I watched a friend play FFX, and it stuck with me untill I finally got around to buying the game five days ago. Needless to say, I'm head over heels for this game, it's just so damn awesome. I plan on getting FFX-2 and Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus, aswell, but after that... Well, that's it. No more PS2 fun for me, in the universe of FF, and it sucks.

So, my question to you all is; does a game excist that has the same combat system as FFX (and most other FF games I take it), and are they worth their price like this game is?

Hope you can help me,
Dako.

I think Il move this to General Discussion

If you dont want anything Ps2 or before, I cant erally help, although Id pretty much only be able to suggest FF games anyway :awesome:

Edit* If you're gunna get DoC you should really think about getting FFVII, and if you're gunna do that, you might aswel get VIII & IX aswel :awesome:

Kay kay

Final Fantasy VIII and IX are good ones you can get. There are for Ps1 but you can play them on your PS2. I think once you play FF10-2 you'll start to feel more into other games and maybe should play some older ones. FF12 is for the PS2 have you played it? The battle system is way different then the previous but with all the side quests it will last a while.

I would say that if you are going to play DoC you really should play Final Fantasy VII first, regardless of the graphics. I played X first as well and was worried about the graphics when I switched to FFVII but after I started they didn't matter at all. You will definitely get more enjoyment (not to mention understanding) out of DoC if you play FFVII first.

Woops, sorry 'bout that, Sandy.

I'm looking for something for PS2, mainly. PC games would be welcome aswell though.
As for the older FF games, I must admit that I'm a bit of graphics ho', so if we're talking back in the squareman grapichal error, I'll have to pass. PS1 could be do-able, I suppose, I'll definetly see what I can find there.

As for FFXII, I was kinda put off by the reviews I've read, particularly concerning the combat system. What I like about FFX mainly, is the combat system, and of course the wonderful storyline. Add to that the short moviescenes, the bosses and the aeons, and you have the ingredients for my new favorite PS2 game.

To end; I'm looking for something in the graphical region of PS2, but PS1 aswell, if you all think it's worth looking into.

(Add: I tried out FFVIII on computer once, and graphics like those are a bit less than what I can play games with, without groaning over the dots and squared facial features. I know I'm horrible, but old graphics make me cry. I blame never having had a console/PC in the gap between my NES and PS1, the former of which I only had about a year before it was sold, and the latter of which I only kept around for half a year, when I realised that no Resident Evil game would ever reach the height of Resident Evil 1 & 2, aswell as Silent Hill. :D)

If its the battle system your after, tbh, i really wouldnt recommend XII, it's fun an' all when you get used to it but it's just not my cup of tea overall, of course thats just my opinion and you might really like it

If you have hand helds Id defo recommend FFIII & IV (ds) and Crisis Core for the PSP, all great games, IV especially

And again, going back to the old school, Breath of Fire III is an amazing game, if you can get past the graphics (which imo, i think aer good anyway) the story is brilliant

OOH! Dragon Quest VIII for the PS2, same battle system as the FF games and it's a whole load of fun, I really enjoyed it

Well you need to decide what is more important to you. Are graphics the be all and end all? Or is the battle system and storyline and general atmosphere of the game more what you find you like?
If the former then I'm afraid there isn't much out there other than FF12, but that is completely different in terms of battle system etc.
If the latter then I suggest going backwards to where the FF series was at its height (imo) with storyline, character development and originality. FF7, 8 and 9, would be good starters, and if you ever think that you can tackle pixelphobia then you really should try the earlier games as well.

But if graphics really is the be all and end all then I'm afraid, FF wise or any other game wise there isn't much else out there. That said, Shadow Hearts has similar battle systems and is out for the PS2, so you might want to try that out, though I can't say whether it is good or not as I didn't play it for very long (in fact I only watched someone else play it for a few hours).

You are really out of luck with only wanting good graphics and FFX related combat system. Either start playing the older FF games or buy another console and hope you find games there that you like.

Oh it doesn't have to be "great" graphics, really, I just can't do pre-PS1 graphics mainly. I don't really know why, I used to play anything I could get my hands on, but the last few years I haven't really been able to stick with focusing on storylines, etc. What's really odd about it, is that I don't really play newer games all that much. Sure, I try them out now and then, but the only game I play regularly, is Neverwinter Nights, which is from... What, 2004? Something like that.

In any case, I've found FFVII and FFVIII used, and FFIX new, all online, and here in Denmark where I live, so I'll be getting those three as soon as possible, along with FFX-2, and I'll look out for Dragonquest VIII aswell. I don't have any handhelds atm, but I do plan on getting a DS at some point, so when that time comes, I'll look into something for that one, too.

It's good that you have decided to get FFVII, FFVIII and FFXI, I hope you will like them because there are many good PS games out there.

two options i see as possible

1. get FFXII. do this if you liked the storyline of FFX as much as the gameplay, because to be honest, FFXII's gameplay leaves a lot to be desired. but the story is fantastic.

2. find a used game store. this might be tough to do, but if you find a privately owned used game store (ie. not gamestop) you could find some square-enix gems for the PS1. or if you're comfortable ordering online and spending a bit, you can find used PS1 games there.

the PS1 series (VII, VIII, and IX) are all fantastic. BUT, may i also recommend FFTactics and FFChronicles (includes FFIV and Chrono Trigger) and Chrono Cross. graphics might be tough to get around, but they're still fantastic games.

You should also note that FFX's battle system is unique in the FF series. FFs IV to IX used the Active Time Battle system, which is real-time to a certain extent. Even FFX-2 uses this system, I think. FFs I to III are entirely turn-based, but still different from X because you select the actions for the whole party before anything happens and the turn order is fixed. FFXII's battle system, as others have said, is totally different.

As I understand, Dragon Quest is a direct 'competitor' to Final Fantasy so there will be similarities. But I would guess that if you take the setting, atmosphere, storyline and battle system of FFX into account as a whole, then you probably won't find anything like it.

It seems strange that you've gone off old graphics. Is it because you've got a bigger TV now? Don't old games generally look worse on screens that are bigger and have better colour definitions?

I have absolutely no idea regarding the better/worse part of big TVs, and I'm just as clueless as to when the change in my tastes happened. The FFVIII game I played around with a bit, was actually bareable for a while, but then I got FFX, laid my eyes on it, and FFVIII hasn't been touched since. Granted, there were quite a few graphical errors in the version I had, so that might've been it.

In FFVIII I also experienced the Active Time battle system, and I found that just as fun, if not more, than the one in FFX, so that's no hindrance for my amusement at all.

I have a game that is like the finalfantasy 10 fighting style. Its called dragon quest also made by square enix IMO dragon quest is not worth it its shit -__-
