Should NASA stop what they are doing and stop exploring the universe?

Personally, I think not. It's for the future and under the present circumstances that our world is in, it really is for the best interests of the people --- of the Earth in general.

But then again, the government is siphoning funds to NASA, it's unbelievable how much:

....a projected 2007 fiscal budget of $2.8 trillion, has shown no sign that the government will decrease spending in the near future.

Also, it's also been argued that NASA is a government waste, and could be better suited as a private corporation....

What do you think?

I think NASA should continue what they are doing... who knows, maybe one day NASA will find ways of mining in space, which could make up fo the funds.

Plus it will make us less ignorant of what mysteries the universe has

That's true.
It really should always be about the future instead of the present, shouldn't it?

And you're right, the funds that we could get from mining or whatever it is from space can make up for funds, provided that we find precious stuff, that is, stuff that'll actually make a profit.

Im sure theres precious stuff out there, Earth cant possibly the only planet of all the planets in the universe to have precious stuff. I hope Im stillalive to find out

Of course we should carry on exploring, it's a basic human instinct.
We all look up into the sky, see all these wonderful things and of course we want to go there, the human race has always been than way.

And yes there are minerals out there, and they could be mined, alot sooner than you may think. What we would mine first is passing asteroids as they are mountains of precious metals, and the low gravity of these object s would require little fuel to life off etc.

To terminate the NASA program would mean terminating the existence of the human species. There is gonna be a day in the distant future when this ol planet will no longer be habitable. If we are to survive any length of time past that day, then we would be relying on NASA to find a way of this rock and onto a different one. Plus, it keeps people like me interested in what is going on outside of this planet. NASA provides valuable information about the cosmos, the planet's past, the solar system's past, the past of the Milky Way, even the past of the Universe. They use this data to make hypotheses about what will one day happen to our sun or our planet, or our galaxy. Who knows maybe one day everyone will be smart enough to build their own spaceships and we won't need NASA. But until then we should let NASA continue forth with their technological advances.

Yeah, of course we shouldn't pull the plug, but there are some people out there who oppose the whole 'space exploration' thing because they say it wastes our money.

Now think about that for one second. Since when does money precede our future in importance?
That's just the sign of the times, we're just too submerged in the idea of high rolling in cash to be able to see clearly the implications of taking out the space exploration program.

I think it's ignorance really, that's what it all comes down to in the end.
It's the same with the big oil companies trying to keep alternative sources down, it's not for the good of the environment, it's not for the good of the people, it's for the good of their own pockets. And I think that says a lot about today. It says a lot about our 'priorities'.

And that is the way the American Government works. Take George Bush for example. He has ties to alot of oil here in Texas. Gas prices here in America used to be around $1.50 a gallon about a year and a half ago. Now that he is near the end of his 2nd and final term in office, gas prices have more than doubled. I guess since he owns some oil he wants to make sure he has something that is worth some money when he leaves office. Then he blames it on other countries raising the price of oil that gets imported into the U.S. The E.P.A., or Environmental Protection Agency, knows that global warming is getting close to the point where reversal of greenhouse gases brought on by petroleum pollution can no longer be reversed. But this is a government agency that gets its funding through the U.S. government. So they will pretty much do as the government says. And a lot of the politicians in the House and the Senate get their funding from oil companies. So Americans are just gonna have to wait until oil reserves run dry before alternative fuels start being considered.

*nods* I suppose.
It's exactly the same thing with the NASA space program, I think. People are just going to keep waiting until the space on Earth actually runs out of space until we find and exploit the 'frontier' of space, which by then would be too little too late.
Again, that's the worst scenario.

Thoughts on this?

I think NASA should be a private cooperation. I love astronomy, and I love learning new things. I don't want space exploration to end; ever. But the ridiculous amounts that are spent on NASA's research...and to no prevail...

But then again...Our president spends hefty amounts on more ridiculous things...like war.

The pursue of knowledge is something that should never be considered as ridiculous, not like war which is a total waste of time and money.

If we were to live without discovering and learning new things, our lives would be monotonous, empty, blunted and pointless. Also knowing new things it's what gives life that little spice :P

Yea, but spending tons of money towards a cause like NASA's is just to be expected. Agree or no, space exploration is a new thing, and I mean the physical kind of space exploration and we're only just developing really new things, and of course, there's new research on things that we have not discovered before, so yeah, it's expected that we pour huge sums of money into this thing.

Sure it's taking quite a while, but then again, what new innovation (a monumental innoation) was invented in 40 years? And that with such promise as space exploration?
People are getting impatient, it seems like.

As they say, Rome wasn't built in a day. *shrugs*
