Acquire's Shinobido 2 Tales of the Ninja was one of the surprise PlayStation Vita announcements from E3, but Sony's gameplay reel gave only a quick glimpse. Famitsu.com has since followed up with a lengthier trailer. Have a look below.

The site also posted a handful of direct feed screens at unfortunately low Famitsu.com resolutions.

Update#1

In Shinobido 2: Tales of the Ninja you play as an assassin who slips through shadows and kills targets from the shadows. You can sneak through grass and around corners by holding the R button. When you get close to an enemy pressing triangle executes them.

I managed to stealth kill a couple of enemies, but was spotted in the bushes during one encounter. I had two choices: run like a coward and try again or fight. I picked the latter option and tried using the square button to swing my katana. While uncouth, a few strikes finished the enemy off. Players also get a few ninja tools like smoke bombs and throwing stars to use.

Acquire, developer of the Tenchu titles, utilized the touch screen on PlayStation Vita. Tap the map in the upper left to blow it up. Press the touch panel on the back and you switch into first person mode. That’s helpful for aiming the grappling hook, a roof scaling tool you can access by pressing down on the d-pad.

Speaking of "first", what happened to the first game? Shinobido 1 exists, but the title was only released in Japan and Europe. Just a few months ago, Acquire’s president asked fans on Twitter if they want a new Shinibido title. Surprise here it is, well at least for Japan. Despite a localized version shown at E3, Shinobido 2: Tales of the Ninja is not confirmed for North America, but publisher Spike hopes they can release the title overseas.

Shinobido 2: Revenge of Zen gets US and UK Vita launch

Confirmation of a UK and US launch for the Namco Bandai stealth ‘em up Shiniobido 2 has arrived via the PlayStation Blog, along with a change of subtitle from Tales of the Ninja to the angrier sounding Revenge of Zen.

Namco Bandai community manager Rich Bantegui dropped by the PS Blog to confirm the launch of assassin-based PS Vita title Shinobido 2: Revenge of Zen and to reveal a little bit more about the game.

Created by Acquire, the firm responsible for the original Tenchu games before the quality of the series went a bit south, Shinobido 2 will be “set against the backdrop of a war-torn land, where three opposing territorial forces fight for control. The player must choose which of these forces to support by taking on various missions. Depending on the player’s choices, the game’s ‘Harakiri Engine’ will allow for a variety of outcomes and constantly changing missions.

“The element of ‘assassination’ is not necessarily more important than any other part of the game. However, assassination missions will occur often as the three opposing territorial forces fight and attempt to weaken the other. Other missions include robbing the enemy’s provisions, kidnapping or protecting people of importance, and others.”

To hear more about the game from Acquire’s Kazuhiro Watanabe and to see what appears to be an assassin using a wing-suit, check out the PlayStation Blog.
