hi,
i've been comparing weapon set ups with eachother, with other words, the 2handers vs the use of a shield and 1hander

i recently changed my tank(Ashe) from a 1hander(sword)+shield to a 2hander(katana)

my damage output got tripled, now that's all very nice considering the weapon was also significantly stronger,
i also noticed that swords only gain power from strength while Katana's gain from pretty much any offensive stat(magick, strength, attack rating and such)
and considering Ashe is a very versatile character in her stats(Basch for example is high on physical stats, while Penelo is rather high on Magickal stats(also the reason i chose Basch as my physical damage dealer and Penelo as my primary healer, and Ashe as my tank/red mage(healing abilities, offensive magick and physical damage if i have to conserve MP)
but that aside, so i read Katanas gain from many stats, so i thought a Katana would be perfect for Ashe, however, i read in another guide tank should wear a shield, why is that? i saw that 2handers give both offensive and defensive stats, while 1handers only offensive and shields only defensive, what's the difference on them then(it wasn't stated in that particular guide i was reading)

i did notice that ever since i changed my weapons that Basch was taking more "aggro" and Ashe was more ignored, but i thought that couldn't be right considering there is a spell that makes a character take all single target damage(forgot the name) which would take care of aggro

so, does it actually matter what type of weapon set up your tank has?
i'm currently considering the make Basch my tank since he has more health
and he's also licenced into technicks instead of magicks(he has basic healing magicks if my healer and red mage go oom(happens rarely thanks to charge)

well i suppose it doesn't really matter what your tank has but i go for 2h weapons all the time because i prefer damage over defence

the difference here gabranth is that the shield is more like...for evasion than defense.

I found the Defender to be a God-send for this purpose. Even if it's not quite as powerful as some other weapons, you don't really need to deal much over 2000 HP damage if you're only planning to go through the main game.

A hard hitting 2 hander sword, with +30 evasion? Come on... that's sweet.

Though, I must say I much prefer single handed swords accompanied with shields. I actually enjoy watching them not damaging me at times. Single handed swords aren't exactly weak, either.

I have never actually equipped anyone with a katana as I like to have defence and offence nicely balanced and a few of the licences are geared towards extra blocking with a shield. I do have Balthier and Penelo with Poles or Spears as they tend to have some defence points too and they are a pretty nifty weapon.

Maybe i should try using 1h+shield
I always go for power :/

and what's the deal with those Katana's? do they indeed benefit from strength and magick power? or is that just a fairytale?
Yep, katanas benefit from magick and strength. I have Masamune (best katana in the game) equipped on Fran with Genji Gloves and she lands an average of 3 hits each turn, each hit between 2500-3000 (although that's with Bravery cast on her). This is at level 62. It's pretty darn sweet.

I only have one party member equipped with a shield, actually... Balthier. I guess I'm just more of an offensive person than a defensive one. ^_^
