It's really simple, just a really simple skin and start from there. You'll learn on your own, I promise. This shall help you to a certain extent for choosing a skin. Have a look and let me know if you still face any issues.
I remember when I discovered Rainmeter for the first time, I created this huge convoluted desktop with shortcuts to everything and gauges and bars and random flares in every corner. I wish I had a screenshot still because man. What a disaster that was xD
I think I've had the same setup for a few years now though. Just the very barebones items (Memory/CPU/Power). I should mix it up again sometime maybe hmmmm.
