Hi everyone,
I'm writing an article on the stories of Final Fantasy and I thought it would be good to include quotes from a few fans.
My questions to you are:
Since there is no ongoing story arc, or continuing characters, or familiar worlds, what makes you a fan of the Final Fantasy series? What keeps you coming back?
Are you a fan of the whole series, or just individual games in the series?
What connections do you find between the games?
Should new players have a working knowledge of the previous games before playing FFXIII? What do newbies need to know?

Thanks for your help guys, if you could please include your first name (or the first name that you'd like me to use) and what country (or state, if you're from Australia) you're from in your post, that would be awesome. My deadline is in around 6 or 7 hours, so there's not a lot of time to get answers..
The article will be in the Sunday Herald Sun in Melbourne, Australia this weekend.

Thanks again,
-Alice.

PS I also posted this at The Final Fantasy Forums, I hope that's not a faux pas?

A fan of 7 through 13, never played the ones before that but I have heard that they are good. The connections between all these games are the role play, fighting, the storyline of the game, side quests, the grind of getting stronger to beat tougher enemies or bosses, and of course the characters and the relationships they form with other characters in their adventures.

You really don't need experience before playing FFXIII. It's easy for anyone to play with or without past experience.

The fact that there is no ongoing story arc is a blessing to the series. In my opinion the survival of the series has hinged on how malleable the FF universe can be whilst still maintaining the watermarks of any FF title. The FF universe has spanned a wide variety of ages, from the medieval and classical ages of the first generation of FFs to the neo futuristic design of FFVII and XIII.

Its these changes coupled with character rosters being refreshed which prevents the series from stagnation and draws a wide variety of RPG fans to the series.

However there are recurring themes in almost every installment, like chocobos, moogles, characters named Cid and even the odd musical theme that are small references to previous installments.

Every fan has their favourite. Singling out a particular one will likely be all it takes to prompt the opinionated masses to descend on you like a pack of rapid wolves.

I would say however that you take a look at FFI, the game that started it all and also the revolutionary FFVI and FFVII iterations.

A seasoned FF player will no doubt have an edge over the newcomers but FFs aren't as elitist as they once were and the game offers a wide berth to players who aren't as well endowed in terms of experience, the 'auto battle' system in particular makes fighting a breeze in the earlier stages and by the time it begins to make small errors in judgement you'd likely not need it anymore.

My pleasure, I love any kind of stimulus to air my opinions :monster:

Good Luck with your article Alice.

I'm personally a casual fan because the Final Fantasy series is always coming up with something new. There is no mold for the Final Fantasy series. Every game is a new world with new characters and new possibilities, unique in it's own way of cultural flavor and setting. Every game is a whole entity in its own right and can never be replicated.

There may be no continuity in the games, but that's the point -- you know you'll be getting a new slate for each game, a whole new adventure and world and characters that no other game has. If it was just the same old characters and setting over and over again, the series would bore even the most tolerant person to tears.

I keep coming back to the series because Final Fantasy has a way of opening doors to the unique and fascinating. No two worlds are alike, no two characters act the same, no two games play by the same rules. There is also a standard of quality in the series -- almost without fail, every world is detailed to an incredible degree, each story is engaging and complex, and the characters are amusing and sympathetic. Despite personal opinions and preferences, you are always guaranteed those three things with every game; whether they suit your tastes or not is up to you. Final Fantasy has no boundries -- it seamlessly blends the fantasy and science fiction genres in different and interesting ways, and do so with an expertise few others can match.

There's a number of connections between the games, but most are simple Easter Egg gimmicks, nothing very big. Like chocobos, moogles, and characters named Cid, Wedge, and Bigs (or anagrams of them) are found in every game. Other than that, every game is totally unique.

I am a follower of the series, but a fan of only 2 games so far, but I haven't played all of the games either. I still have a ways to go.

FFXIII is, like all the others of this series, it's own game. You don't need any working knowledge. No one had a working knowledge of what Halo was before they played it, did they? The Final Fantasy games are no exception.

New players don't need to know anything about the games other than to have fun. There are no secrets, there are no 'learning-the-ropes-of-FF' clubs; like any other new game, just pick up the controller and go.

P.S. So, Alice, for those of us not in Australia, are we going to see the final report? =D

I keep coming back to see the new worlds and characters created by some of the best minds in the gaming industry. The series itself is magicial, romantic, emotional and powerful.

Are you a fan of the whole series, or just individual games in the series?

VIII was my favourite, mainly because it was the first Final Fantasy game I played and it has put me onto the road of Final Fantasy. 11 years later and Im still playing them!

What connections do you find between the games?

Heroes and villians are the key connection. Fighting agaisnt something with a party of people who share the same outlook. Every game is different and the same at the same time!

Should new players have a working knowledge of the previous games before playing FFXIII? What do newbies need to know?

No, not really. Its up to the player where they wish to start. Be it the latest Final Fantasy or the older, more popular ones. As long as they play X before X-2, then its ok whatever order they go in.

Good luck Alice :highfive:

Hey guys,
Thanks again for your help. The piece went into the paper on Sunday. I can't find it online, but I'll try and get a scan, although it might have to wait until next weekend when I'm actually near a scanner. Unless anyone here happened to pick up a copy of the Sunday Herald Sun this week?
