I'm in the market for a PSP fairly soon and was hoping that the members of FFF, in their great wisdom, could talk to me about PSPs.

What are the differences between the different "kinds" of PSPs and, in your view, which is the best?

How much is a good, new PSP these days?

Where's a good place to buy the above console?

What's this about going on the internet on your PSP, particularly for gaming purposes?

Anything else you can think of?

I'd honestly recommend you don't waste your money. The only game I've properly enjoyed on mine is Lemmings, which is just a novelty game really. Lego Star Wars 2 was alright, especially when played co-operatively. Of course it's all a matter of personal taste, but I think I wasted a decent amount of money on my PSP. D:

I'm not sure what the prices are now, I think they're roughly £120 for the basic pack but that's just a stab in the dark really.

1: The different 'kinds' of PSP have different things added (the higher the number the better) i'm not too informed on this front, but on the 3000 model i'm getting soon, it has the ability to be played through the TV.

2: A good, new PSP is around £120 but a cheap, preowned one i've seen for around the £80 area

3: Places like gamestation, GAME, gamestop etc should have PSPs in stock

4: The basic PSP internet works through a switch on the left, allowing you to play in the width of a room in your house. However with a PS3 or a program i've heard of online, you can play worldwide (though very few PSP games take advantage of this feature)

Not quite, Jack.
Dissidia, Crisis Core, Monster Hunter Freedom 1/2/Unite, God of War, and other great games.
Add that to the fact that you can watch movies, browse the web, listen to music, view photos, et cetera.
What with custom firmware, you'll even be able to emulate games and run homebrew apps/games. I've had my PSP for about 3 years and I still enjoy it.

I personally think Slim PSPs are a waste of money, they're just thinner and lighter. It's not like a Phat PSP weights like a laptop. But it's your choice.

About internet - you can connect to the internet if you can find a wireless hot-spot. If you have a wireless router, you can connect right at home. Otherwise, just go to your local coffee shop/library/McDonalds. While few games have complete online play, most of games have Ad-Hoc, meaning that you need a friend that has a PSP and the game you want to play. And he must be in 10 meter range.
You can use Ad-Hoc Party with a PS3 though, and I've heard of something called Xlink Kai which I know not what it its.

Dissidia,
I'll let you have that one, since I haven't played it.
Crisis Core,
Got boring after a day. It's all the same gameplay, and it fails to hold the attention for long.
Monster Hunter Freedom 1/2/Unite,
Again, I haven't played but I've heard bad things about Monster Hunter.
God of War,
Nowhere near as good as the games on PS2. It's a slimmed down and basic version.
Add that to the fact that you can watch movies,
As you can with an mp3 player.
browse the web,
As you can with a laptop.
listen to music,
As you can with an mp3 player.
view photos,
As can pretty much every mobile phone these days.

And a PSP does all of this, it's much cheaper :monster:

I for instance, have Tales of Eternia, Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth, Crisis Core, etc etc. And I find them quite fun (granted, CC's missions are a bore) but the games you like vary on what you're into.

Tbh, it's not worth buying unless you put custom firmware on it - playing games from different consoles on one system is great, especially since it's more portable than a laptop.

Monster Hunter is a great game, but it's rather repetitive - there's alot of 'farming' to be done, fighting the same monster multiple times, etc. Dissidia is a decent enough game, as is Crisis Core. The other FF remakes aren't that much better than the originals. Birth By Sleep will come out soon, but a few single games aren't worth the money unless you really want to play them. I use the homebrew applicatons/emulators more than the original functions of the PSP.
