I tried to find a help section somewhere around here but couldn't find one so just figured I'd ask in here.

Okay, so I've had my ps3 pretty much since ps3 came out (06 or 07), and it has lasted me well. A few times it has crashed before. When I say crashed I always just figured it was overheating. It would beep 3 times and turn off, I'd reboot and it would be fine again. Not this time. This time I have the dreaded yellow light of death. I've looked around the net and I've come to terms with the death of my beloved ps3 :sad3: but now I really want to know if there is any possible way to save my files.

I'm willing to pay extra cash to be able to keep my save game data. It's extremely frustrating for this to happen when it has. I just completed the first mass effect game (maxed out and everything finised) and am nearly finished the second game. If I can't get my save data, that will mean I'll have to replay the first game all over again! I seriously do not want to have to do that. Not only that, but I've had this playstation for a lot of years, there's a lot of save files I'd really rather not lose. Does anyone know of a way I can save them?

Thanks in advance!

If you have another same model PS3, just take the HDD out and replace it with the one you have saves on.

And, Did you try the Rebuild Database method? It's been known to fix some, if not, few YLODs.

1. Turn off your PS3
2. Hold down the Power button until you hear a double beep, let go.
3. From the menu (if you did it right,) choose rebuild database, if your YLOD can load the menu up.

Would just swapping the HDD work? It would have to be the same model and everything, right? Which, judging by the age of his PS3....

When I tried swapping out a couple of HDDs years ago I was forced to reformat, so I assumed it would not work. Maybe I was mistaken, then, or maybe it was because of an update to the firmware?

Really?

I'm not sure. I watched as my brother switched out the HDD from his old dead 120GB to a new one he bought 3 weeks after. And it read it no problem, didn't know it wanted you to reformat.

I've heard that swapping the HDD doesn't work because I'd still lose all the information on it. Also, my ps3 is one of the original models, the ones that played ps2 games. I honestly can't believe it has lasted me so long. I've heard rumours about a hairdryer fix (which involves wrapping the console in towels and blasting it with a hairdryer for about 20 mins). I had a look at the fix you linked, but I'd be a bit worried taking my machine apart like that. I'll try the first solution tomorrow (give it time to cool down) and if it turns on I'll back up my files asap and get my game out.

I'm thinking of sending it away for a more permanent fix though, simply because it does play all the generations of games which is really useful. Especially since the ps4 doesn't look like it will play any. I think if I send it away though, that I lose all my save data before I get it back, so I'd still need to find a way to back up my files before then and the hairdryer fix worries me that it would be unrepairable after.

My beloved B/C PS3 YYOD'd last year, I tried the thing Raul said about holding the button down but it didn't work for me. I ended up just buying a new ps3 and losing all my save data which was a dark and sad time for me :(

I heard something about using a hairdryer on it might help but I am not sure exactly what you're meant to do. Otherwise you can send it off to sony who will fix it for you for a price, or just take the HDD out and swap it?

I'm waiting until I get a new usb stick, one hopefully big enough because if I do get it to turn on I'll likely only have one chance. There are videos on youtube of how to do the hairdryer trick. Some people say their ps3 has worked for weeks, sometimes months afterwards, but I'm not taking any chances. Swapping the HDD won't work, since I'd still need to reformat it so would lose all the data anyway, and sending it off to get fixed they wipe the memory so I still need a way to back up the files before I do that. I'll try the button holding thing, then the dairdryer thing, and hopefully one of the two works for as long as I need to get my save data :sad3:

I did get my new flash memory stick, and I did try various methods of trying to salvage my saved data, but none of them worked. I even tried the hairdryer trick (three times!) but by then my new ps3 super slim had arrived, and I missed playing games so much that I just reformatted my hard drive and am going to start from scratch. In a way it will be kind of nice, starting everything from new. So maybe it's not such a bad thing after all. Thanks for the help, everyone who replied! I appreciated it, even though I didn't end up being able to save my files.
