Now this is a hugely debatable subject, but I don't want spam to enter this thread. Keep it collected, and don't get too heated. Also don't get pervy.. just think about it. So what do you think about legalization of prostitution?

Why do you think prostitution was made illegal in the first place?

Do you think it is unethical and do you realize there are other forms of prostitution in the world right now, even largely here in the states. So what do you think.. ?

I'll attack it, trust me.. but you first.

Prostitution was legalised over here a couple of years ago.
There was much opposition to it, and I think it's a good thing generally. Most of the 'working girls' ply their trade in brothels rather than on the streets, and because there are less pimps they get more money from it. It's far safer now than before, and the legalisation hasn't lead to a significant increase in prostitutes.
I don't see any problems with it, I suppose people may see it as an endorsement by decriminalising it, but that's inaccurate. It's the oldest profession for a reason.

I honestly have no idea why prostitution is illegal in the first place. I mean, if a person seeks personal pleasure from another and is willing to pay for it, then that's their business. Naturally the main reason is because the government hasn't figured a way to implement taxation into the job. I'm sure if there was a place where it could all be properly sanctioned and run out of, risks like kidnapping and murder and such would go down a lot. The other major concern is getting the prostitutes a health card to assure that a person isn't paying for damaged goods. In the big picture of things, this shouldn't really be that hard to implement.

It's quiet possible that it was illegalized because of how taboo sex acts were in the past. What I mean is, old TV shows would have a married couple sleeping in 2 single beds instead of 1 bed together. We all know that wasn't the case in real life, but it was portrayed as being negative. Sex always has been and always will be, but in the past it was sort of frowned upon to do something as conservative as oral sex, and here you have women that will do anything for the right price. I honestly have no idea if this had an impact on disallowing prostitution, but it's possible.

I don't see a problem with prostitution really. Making it illegal creates more shady activity with it. Now you have girls working the street corners trying to pick up strangers. Who the hell knows what these strangers intend for their night-time lady friend, but it's very possible something bad can come of it. I'm sure the government has their reasons for keeping it illegal, but there is certainly things worse than prostitution that's legal. It doesn't really matter to me either way, as I've never payed for a prostitute before and probably never will, but those are my thoughts on the matter.

Exactly, while I'll never even think about going to a prostitute or whatever, I know there are people out there who use dating networks in the same respect. Craigslist for example, but doesn't mean people always pay for it in the same respect as normal prostitution.. but they do if they think about the money they put into their woman (guys point of view) for paying for meals and whatever else.

Most of the times (not dissing anyone) these people are looking for a quick lay. I've even heard my friend (who is married to a bisexual) using Craigslist to advertise their relationship in order to get a 2nd girl in on sex, because his wife would love it.

Okay so here's my argument though:

The common misconception is that all sex has emotional ties involved. While I would love to live in a fairy tale and think this is true, this is not the case. There are plenty of men and women in our generation who have needs in which the common people would think are over the top. Nymphomania is more common today than back in the 1950's that's for sure, or at least it is not behind closed doors anymore.

I mean prostitution is very much alive but is very underground right now. I think because of it, there are a lot of problems with.. trafficking. Kids kidnapped and sold as sex slaves to rich and powerful people.

While I would love to poke fun at people and say.. "well they just need to get laid.. and a prostitute could help this" I would not condone it.

Now don't be so closed minded on this either.. there is such thing as male prostitution.. "juggalos" so to speak.

The real reason I believe prostitution was made illegal are for two reasons primarily:

1) Taxation as Stang said. How would the government keep records of this most of the times "cash" incorporated enterprise.

2) Decriminalization as Hal put it. People see it a huge risk if "these" people were to solicit sex. First there is no insurance agency in the world who would insure these people. Also what if a guy/girl were to assault these individuals for not fulfilling their wishes.. well then that's another thing for police to keep track of. It would be hard to monitor these laws, unless of course it was only brothels. Brothels would be taxed per se, and only sponsor those that were "clean" so to speak. This would cut down from people on the streets... soliciting.
