Alright, we already have a pronunciation topic in the Final Fantasy 8 forum but it's about c.d. vs. seed. This is more about regular pronunciations in the game. How do you say mage? Moogle? Moomba? ... the list goes on. Every time Busta comes over, we talk about Final Fantasy. And every time we talk about Final Fantasy, we argue about pronunciation.

Aztec: "Well yea because you could be a mmmm-age in brrr-me-ah-see-ah and help Fr-a-ah."
[Translation: Well yea because you could be a mage in Burmecia and help Freya.]

Busta: "Don't you mean be a m-ah-jjj in brrr-men-see-ah and help Fr-ah?"

Aztec: "No dammit!" *smack*

Busta: "Oh no! My feelings!"

Wow, three incredibly pointless posts to kick off the topic with...

Yea, it's about well... how to say a word. And it matters, about as much as everything else we discuss on here at least. I don't think knowing whether Cloud threw Sepiroth into the mako reactor or whether he jumped is ever really going to help me in life but we discuss it because we're fans and it passes the time. So if you don't like the topic or you have Hippopotomonstrosesquippeddaliophobia then you don't have to post in here.

Thats harsh, I thinks it's a perfectly valid thread. I generally have got the pronounciations right with the following exceptions.

1) Yuffie (i say yuffy as opposed to the correct Yoo-fee)
2) Cait Sith ( i say kate sith instead of the correct caught shee)
3) Lucrecia ( i say loo-cre-she-a instead of the correct lu-cret-she-a)
4) Chocobo (I say chok-o-bo instead of the correct choke-o-bo)

As to Aztecs' examples, mage is definately mayj. Freya is fray'ya (based on Norse mythology anyway). Burmecia is open to contention as I have never actually heard it spoken but I would go for bur-me-she-a.

I like to know how the words should be pronounced but changing to the correct way is really difficult after so long.

How I pronounce things:

Freya = Fray-ya
Burmecia = Ber-mee-see-ah
Zidane = Zid-ayn (I've heard some people pronounce it Zid-an)
Tidus = Tie-duss
Mage = Mayj

2) Cait Sith ( i say kate sith instead of the correct caught shee)

It's pronounced Caught-Shee? ... that's stupid :P
I pronounce it "Kite-Sith"

Chocobo = Cho-ko-bo (When I first played the series, I could have sworn it was spelled "Choboco" :P)

I pronouce the following...

Cait Sith: Kate Sith
Freya: Frey-ah
Yuffie: Yuh-fee
Tidus: Tie-dus
Burmecia: Bur-me-si-ah
Zidane: Zi-dan
Lucrecia: Lu-cret-sia

... I think that's about it. Any more weird pronouciations?

I pronounce...

Cait Sith - Kate Sith
Zidane - Zye-dane.
Freya - Freigh-ya
Tidus - Tie-dus.

Aeris - Air-hiss
Aerith - Air-myth
Tifa - Tea-do re me fa so la ti do
Yuffie - You-fee
Cait Sith - Kate-Sith lord
Lucrecia - Loose-creapy-shut

Quistis - Quick-distant-diss
Seifer - Seph-meter

Zidane - Xylaphone-great dane
Eiko - Echo

Tidus - Tea-dust

I think that this thread is perfectly legtimate. If I see anybody else snarking off, being rude or being harsh towards anybody in ANY way, I will issue warnings.

Eiko ~ Ee-ko
Steiner ~ Steye-ner
Seifer ~ Sigh-fer
Aerith ~ Ayr-ith
Oeilvert ~ Oh-eel-vert (First time round it was "Delivert" :P)
Iifa ~ Eye-fah
Vivi ~ Viv-ee (I've heard someone call him Vee-vee)

Is Cecil "See-sill" or "Seh-sill"? I can't decide.

i have always said yuffy as well,it wasnt until advent children i think that i heard her name as yuufie

i remember first getting number 7 and not being able to pronounce sephiroth....i was saying it sep(hard P)sep-high-rolf..instead of sef-ir-off(that is right isnt it?)

oh and i always said cat-sif lol,as it looked like a cat sat on the big guys back

It's Iifa??? o_O
WOw and the whole time I was playing, I thought it was Lifa...like "leaf"...wow...o__o

I pronounced Oeilvert like "Noel-convert"

And I always say Sephiroth like "Seperate-Peer-cloth"

It's Sef-E-roth, like you would say seraph, as in the choir of angels... or like how they say the name in the song "One Winged Angel".

Ole'-ver-eat is how I usually say Oeilvert, which isn't right... but it's how I say it. lol

And yea, it's Teefa not Tifa.

lol Also Busta and I were approaching Djose temple on our replay of FFX when we got into a heated arguement about the pronunciation of Djose. I said jose, with a silent D. He said Duh-ose, with a heavy D and a silent j. I was right! hehe Screw you BustaMoM! hehe

I thought that too when I first played it. I thought it was spelled Lifa, but unlike you thought it was "Leef-ah" I thought it was "Life-ah". But I looked closely at the screen, and on Wikipedia, and they said "Iifa" :P

Woah I thought it was Sef-eR-oth instead of E-roth. I thought the e was pretty much silent. And i usually say CAT-Sith. But i've had the same problems with a couple of my friends. Start talking about FF and say the names different. Like i'd say Mid-gar while my friend says Mid-e-gar.

I've heard Mid-e-gar too but I say Mid-gar. Again I think a lot of these pronunciations have to do with where the words originated from. Like Midgar comes from Midgard (Mid-gard) from Norse Mythology. It supposibly a huge defensive fortress in the middle of the earth to protect mankind from giants. There was also a Midgard Serpent, FYI...
