I voted yes.

It is still an opinion. The story made you think. Before all these FAQs came out and made hypothesis's of everything that made sense and other FF7 games sprouted to tie loose ends we all were wondering wtf really happened with cloud. My main character was never understood fully and they swapped what he was so many times that the holes would make you play it again.

The way the story was handled and how you played during the cinematics was incredibly well done. Especially during the first weapon encounter @ Junon. Tifa getting gassed, barret and sith looking for a way out, slapping mayhem. Good fun that they didnt need to add but did.

Each character had their own story that you "wanted" to find out about. I always thought "who is this lil butt kicker?" and "why does he kick so much of it?". Eg like Vincent or one of my favorites Yuffie.

Graphically, it is not the best today.
Story, it is the most interesting/captivating to me
Gameplay, it is the best if you dont abuse it

I think alot of the ease of use for gameplay has been abusing the system with it's holes. Cheating in a game never gave the accomplishment feeling (at least to me). Obviously these are all opinions and i wouldnt blast anyone for thinking differently.

My top 3 RPGs for this day and age.

FF7 (played on my ps3)
FF6 (played on my hacked wii)
Lost Oddesey (xbox360)

Without reading anymore posts or threads, let me just say this...

An RPG is meant to be read like a book, if it wasn't then this would not be called Role-playing material. When Final Fantasy first came out on NES, I called it the best RPG of it's time. When FF3 (SNES version) came out well it broke new barriers as well as far as RPGs come.

Final Fantasy broke era after era with most game releases but what really rocked our RPGs was the FFVII era. When it came out on PSX I never knew I could be so involved in the gameplay or the storyline, each aspect of the game was revolutionary.

Ever since this game came out, I have only seen graphical touch ups and new combat systems. (From Magic to Materia, then back to Magic) (From espers to Summons then back to Espers then to Aeons...)(From Limit Breaks to Overdrives) (From Pixelated 2d garbage to 3D Real time RPG)

I mean we really haven't seen such an amazing branch off of Final Fantasy as FFVII was so bold to do. It encompassed the new and the old time RPGS and gave us something we will all remember. Now whether you started playing VII now or back when it came out, could actually decide your opinion.

I am very partial to the Adult themed RPGS - hince why I never touched Kingdom Hearts or Grandia or anything that had a lame Disney type theme. Xenogears was my baby.. I loved the ever living crap out of this game, but FFVII was a very strong rival.

IF you were actually desythetized by all the crappy fanboy spewed out garbage that came about because of this game.. like the over glorification of Sephiroth or the Weakness in Cloud or the hatred toward Aeris.. well you my friend are a victim.

This game was classic, but everyone is entitled to their opinion. Everyone has a difference of taste, but by far this game became the most loved and the most "Bring everyone together's Consesus" game of it's time.

It is forever Epic.

I'm obbsessed with Final Fantasy VII, and am so badly obbsessed that I would argue to the death its best game ever hahaha.
I just love the depth of the story line, and i've never played another game quite like it.

I don't know about being the best but, it is very popular, with its followup titles as well as a movie. No question that it has become a pop icon of our time.

I started playing legend of Dragoon back in the day & was really enjoying it too. I couldn't seem to master the additions, so like you said, I would have only gotten so far into the game before I would have been stuck. I ended up having to trade it in.

I think ALOT of people outside japan rate this game so high as it was their main introduction into RPG's and Final Fantasy. I know it was me.

You could sort of say its the StarWars of our generation that you rival other things up against.

Me personally I rate it because it was the first game to really grip me and hold my arse on the sofa. I have a very low attention span, so a game that could hold my attention I respected.

As far as "BEST EVER", far from it, Character models were shit, music was in midi formats, Character propotrions changed in FMV, Battle, Map. Translation was a bit weak.

At the time of its release it could of maybe held the title of best ever. But now its just like watching a movie from the 80's, it was fun at the time...and still is. But bigwigs are still trying to milk its sucess with spin off crap

Lmao, LoD is alright. Just because it has more disks then FFVII doesnt make it superior, by a long shot. There is no answer for Materia in LoD. The Materia combos. All the extra side quests an shit. All the shit that you've never even found out about in the game that I could show you, it's real cool, lmao. Anyway. LoDs great, love it, own it. I have FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX, Legend of Dragoon, Legend of Mana, Breath of Fire III, Breath of Fire VI and the Final Fantasy IV / Chrono Trigger combo disk. I know sick RPGs inside and out. Ive played through them all by myself and all using FAQs every step of the way, Ive fully owned each and every one of the greatest games for one of the greatest systems (Im using the original PSX, fyi) and I love my little grey box.

BTW - FFVII pwns
Vote = FFVII

EDIT IN:

Id also like to add Castlevania SOTN onto that PSX list, because it's sort of an RPG as well, and official RPG or no, that game is tremendously bad-ass. I would almost say that SOTN is as fun to play through to me as LoD. Lmao. And I can beat SOTN in 4 hours flat. 3 with Richter.

Final Fantasy VII is a very good game but in my opinion not the best rpg. There were other games that I played that were better like other Final Fantasy's. In my opinion I liked VIII the most. Xenosaga and xenogears were excellent rpgs that I could not miss.

Part of the problem is this was a lot of people's first RPGs so it holds a special place in their heart. As a lot of said, is it the best, no, but is it great, yeah it is. While there was not a lot of character development, the fun filled cast (mostly) and the extremly intriguing story made up for that. I would put it about 3rd or 4th best RPG in the Final Fantasy universe, which is still great

honestly i think ffvii is my favorite but idk about best its def up there with chrono cross and legend of dragoon. i was in 3rd grade when i got ffvii and loved it to death
