This is a serious topic, so please dont move it to the spam section please.

To all members in the UK, have you noticed we are stocked to the rim of reality TV shows and annoying competition shows involving dance and music?

Its getting beyond ridiculous, IMO this isnt talent, its complete and utter boredom! Seeing people who want 15 minutes of frame embrass themseleves in front of the nation. Yes, we get some classic moments, but come on. Filling our Fridays and Saturdays with this garbage is getting silly.

Its not worth the TV license as there is nothing but reality crap spewing out of our TV. Yes, you may say dont watch it, but when youre paying for a TV license, it takes the mickey big style!

What are my fellow Brits opinions on these shows? Do you love the fact that we are getting talent and reailty shows thrown at us left right and center? Or are you like me and just demand some decent TV, like dramas or some who-done-its?!

I see the TV licence as just another tax. they tax everything else so why not TV. The money goes too the BBC which is the propaganda i mean broadcasting side of the british goverment. The goverment uses the BBC to "educate" the british people. They have worded the laws behind the TV licence to say that " too be in posession of any piece of equipment capable of recieving any siginals" which means that includes computers.
And now they are transfuring too digital which means 1/2 the population wont get TV.
Its all a load of crap, we pay all this money for nothing.

deffinately agree with you there. 1 every now n then for the people who like that kinda thing i can accept, but its got to there being 1 on lots of days of the week, the whole year round. and when theyr done on the tv, the winner becomes a "celebrity" n starts being in all the papers and everything - personally i couldnt care less about them.
soz if ppl feel thats being harsh :P.

lol I know I'm not a brit, but the same thing's going on in America too =o I didn't know it was going on over there as well o_O

Some of the shows I watch cause they're entertaining, but some are just ridiculous =o There's two different t.v. stations that are airing pretty much the exact same show just for an example, and it's a stupid premise at that. Where you don't have to be good at singing, but you have to remember the words. Pretty much just a giant karaoke competition xo

There was a show on the other day showing clips from a bunch of reality shows that they thought were stupid, and I hadn't even heard of half of the shows they were talking about xo

ah but u have so many million stations in america doncha?
n u now have simon cowell - who's gone global with (not sure - is it pop idol or x-factor?!).
going with johnnys "the money goes to the bbc" - how about we just take the bbc off n watch 3 4 n 5? should be some option to do that.
n i think ppl will upgrade to digital - it wud be so strange if they didnt - life without tv - shock-horror!

You do get the odd good show (usually imports like House) but reality TV and the endless soaps are cheaper and more importantly draw in the ratings so until the masses wake up to the utter shitness of these programmes and stop viewing them then nothing will be done about it.

These shows are on ITV and Channel 4. They are on Digital to. Thats what Im saying, the BBC may be making us pay for the license fee, but many other channels are doing the same reailty/fame shows also.

All these competition shows, if you notice, they don't require high production values, and they are enjoyed my most of the viewing public, this equals big bucks for tv stations. I myself cant stand these competion and reality tv shows...

yeah, we have to face it that they arent gonna stop making them when so many ppl like em :(. just gotta hope theres something decent on a different channel. or come on here! internet ftw :)

:O this was on bbc's website - Italian TV bans reality TV shows
"After all the vulgarity, all the swearing, and the smut, its time is finally coming to an end."

the Italians have the right idea here methinks! though they probably still have "talent" shows like x-factor etc, i dunno.

All reality TV went shit when The X-Factor came about, or around that time anyway. Big Brother was good for the first couple of years, but now it's boring. The house mates depress me.

I only watch the film and music channels now, and the good shows like Friends and The Simpsons. Other than that, British TV is awful. I agree wholly that it isn't worth the license fee.

Why do you need a license to watch TV? Ever heard of an antenna? :P

EDIT: btw before any of you tell me the normal channels suck, remember that Fox and G4 are both not cable stations.

In the UK you need to buy for a TV licence. If you dont have one and you use a TV, you get a fine and could go to prison, antenna or not.

And we dont get shows like Fox and G4.

That's so absurd and illogical it makes the Home Shopping Network look like a viable piece of entertainment. Clearly, the only solution is for everyone in the UK to move to the US.

Wow, you have to own a license to watch a TV eh? So is this like a license per individual in the house? Or does it only apply to the owner of the television set? Are you going to get hauled off for stopping to take a look at some television set facing outside towards the sidewalk at some store window, or is it just the owner of that particular store who would have to furnish the license in that case? That seems pretty damn totalitarian to me.

Well, in any case over here in the US we definitely share your distaste for reality TV. Seems like the general, mindless sort of population here is all over these shows too. And I'd think that no matter what your country, if the ratings are going to be going through the roof then they're going to beat a dead horse with these types of shows.

as far as i know, you just have to have 1 per household. so i guess it wud be the owner of the tv yeah.

You can have as many TVs in the house as you want and only pay for the one license every year. I believe its £131 for colour and £44 for black and white.

But Im mainly discussing that the crap thats put on the TV here in the UK is not worth it!

I feel this argument is becoming rather one sided and im gonna stick up for my corner! Even if it is dangerous...

I feel that reality shows are not just entertaining but also educational in a sense. For example, Big Brother, it has a cast of amazingly funny people and it is a psychologists HEAVEN. BB has a spin off show called on the couch on Channel 4 on Sundays and i have learnt SO much about how peoples minds work.

I OCCASIONALLY watch X-Factor because i think it is a step up from Pop Idol because it opens up the contest to bands AND it gives older people a chance. Also not long ago there was Britains Got Talent which opened the door even further. You have to give TV shows some credit...

But I must agree that the BBC is rubbish. They offer feeble and unwatchable attempts at talent shows (eg Fame Academy). But I think that they CAN offer some good things. (eg Doctor Who)

In the end, TV shows are both loved AND hated and one show that you may think is bad, another person chooses to like it, and whether you like it or not, TV stations are gonna keep churning out rubbish and the public's gonna keep lapping it up. It's enevitable that we'll have to live with it...

You have good points but you forget one thing, the BBC is the only broadcaster that has a share of the licence, the other broadcasters dont get a bit they have too rely on advertising, which they spend 15 mins of every hour doing.

Some of you, nay, 1 of you, classes this as entertainment. But the fact that we pay for having a TV license and the same shit is broadcast is becoming over the top! Shows end and new ones are put in their place, Strictly Come Dancing has now been replaced by DanceX, with the same judges. XFactor was replaced by Britians got Talent with one same judge and now we have Kids BAllroom Dancing being shown on Saturdays!

Its complete and utter garbage and Im sick of the fact that people tune in and watch this bull! Yes, pepole can have their opinions, but producers are churning out the same old shit cause they know they will get the viewers. I think we shouldnt have to pay for crappy TV.
