Essentially it all comes down to this: a showdown between two great composers. I ask you now whom do you prefer? Which composer has satisfied your musical needs the most? Mind you I'd appreciate the discussion remain civil. Let's hear it from the fans!

Didn't Sakuraba compose the music from Valkyrie Profile? I loved the music in that game, but Uematsu is way better.

Uematsu did amazing work, particularly on ff7, 8 was pretty damn good too. i do think it went slightly downhill later on. although i did enjoy Jecht's theme on FFX,

For sure it's Nobuo Uematsu. In all the Final Fantasy games i've played he has come up with brilliant masterpieces. Mainly the big one that sticks out is of course One Winged Angel. Another great songs that I really enjoyed was Liberi Fatali (FFVIII), Otherworld (FFX), Kiss Me Goodbye (FFXII).

Not to say Motoi Sakuraba isn't very good because he is, especially in a few of his games such as the Tales Series, (Tales of Phantasia etc.) Also he composed some great music from Super Smash Bros. Brawl too.

Well Uematsu's music is alright but Motoi Sakuraba is a music god!! I mean, play Baten Kaitos and you'll hear the legendary Sakuraba's music. All of Sakuraba's progressive songs rock (Star Ocean) and he's got a talent for gathering gregorian chants. If I respect anybody on earth, it's him.

Uematsu-san

Definantly Nobuo Uematsu-san. I grew up with his music, and so, I rather listen to his music than Sakuraba-san's. I mean, Sakuraba-san's music is beautiful, don't get me wrong, but I rather listen to Uematsu-san's because it is such a pleasent tone to actually listen to. It's too bad that he is leaving Square-Enix, but I'll always remember his music.

Though I rather listen to Uematsu-san, I have come to accept Sakuraba-san's music from FF12. I actually love the music in the game, thus the pleasing sounds of Sakuraba-san's magical music. But all-in-all, I would rather listen to Uematsu-san's music over Sakuraba-san's music any day.

:jon:

Wow. this is a REALLY tough decision for me. They are the ONLY two game composers i really listen to. On one hand you have Nobuo Uematsu, FF composer, and I love FF soundtracks, but then Motoi Sakuraba did Tales of Symphonia, Baten Kaitos and Xenosaga, which are my three favorite non FF games. Baten Kaitos has one of the most beutiful soundtracks of any game I have ever played, but the Xenosaga and Tales of Symphonia Soundtracks are a little generic, Truthfully though I've really only heard the soundtracks for Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy VII, / Advent Children, the little bit of the FF XII he did and a little of Final Fantasy IX. I think that as much as Nobuo has done, that I have to pick Motoi Sakuraba, honestly based on the Baten Kaitos Soundtrack, as I really feel like it is more epic in some ways than many of the Final Fantasy Soundtracks.

Kyoko, I don't think Sakuraba did anything in FFXII, That was Hitoshi Sakimoto I believe.

As Mixi said before me, that was Hitoshi Sakimoto, not Motoi Sakuraba that did FFXII's music.

Except for the Tales Of Symphonia soundtrack, which sounded too samey in my opinion, i've liked everything i've heard of Sakuraba's work. Especially Star Ocean 3's music and the jazz elements he put into it.
However, i think the quality of work Uematsu has created outshines Sakuraba's work, so i pick Nobuo Uematsu.

If this had been a Uematsu vs Hamauzu question however, i'd be giving a very different answer.;))

I see you have refined tastes. I'm curious to know which Baten Kaitos you've played that helped you come to such a fine deduction? That is, if I'm not too imposing....

UEMATSU PLEASE!!

his music is so easily remembered, it is just amazing, moving, and always fits perfectly to the situation, a truly great composer, as good as the greats of old, if not better, i love his works so much!!

Respectful Apology

Oops.... I'm sorry... I mixed them up. Please forgive me. *bows respectfully* And I'm sorry if I'm double posting. ^^; But thank you all for correcting me on this. I do apologize.

Nobuo, definitely. I'm actually doing OWA for my music commentary at school (a big analytical essay) and it's made me realise just how much musical talent has been dripped into it. xD

All of his pieces constantly please, even the average ones are better than most composers' best works.

nobuo uematsu has composed music that has literally saved my life, seriously

nobuo uematsu is the greatest composer ever imho

the only person I acknowlage as a fitting heir to his dynasty of music is Ishimoto because crisis core's soundtrack was beautiful

even shimimura (kingdom hearts and parasite eve) doesn't compare

*bows to john williams and danny elfman statues* "sorry, but its the truth good sir's"

Ack, there's no need to apologise! It was just a simple mistake, that's all. I'm sorry if how i put the correction across sounded a bit too fourthright though, so i must apologise back to you. :D

Back on topic, i enjoy Uematsu a lot, but i get the feeling that the music he's composed recently has fallen a fair bit short of the high standard he's set himself in the past. I only hope that he's only going through a transitional phase he's going through and that this isn't a sign of things to come...

I think that the large amount of FF music that has been played by orchestras and in various ethnic styles make me a bit biased because some of them are performed so well, but I’d still say Uematsu. While there are Sakuraba songs I love, looking at all the music as a whole, Uematsu wins (though I haven’t heard a single memorable song since VII).

I have only played the first one, though I have heard some of the songs from the Second one. Baten Kaitos just has such a beautiful soundtrack, and to me it just outshines every Final Fantasy Soundtrack I have heard.

OOH! btw love your signature. Xehla's Prayer in Baten Kaitos was one of my favorite lines in the game lol

and Kyoko: no need to apologize dear :) It was an honest mix up. I've mixed them up once before too lol

I see....Baten Kaitos is one of my few favorite series. I'm usually very picky with games since I don't really get much of a chance to play games. Both games have tremendously beautiful music. I cannot even begin to fathom how human beings are capable of such refined tastes. Is it just that we, mankind feel the same with music? How is it that beautiful music is considered beautiful by the masses? Can this be...fate?

Ohh you love my sig? Yeah it's pretty rad. I have memorized that quote completely and I can recite it at any moment. These lines have a profound and articulate meaning to them.
